Multiphase gas flows in the nearby Seyfert galaxy ESO428-G14
We present ALMA rest-frame 230 GHz continuum and CO(2-1) line observations of
the nearby Compton-thick Seyfert galaxy ESO428-G14, with angular resolution 0.7
arcsec (78 pc). We detect CO(2-1) emission from spiral arms and a
circum-nuclear ring with 200 pc radius, and from a transverse gas lane with
size of pc, which crosses the nucleus and connects the two portions
the circumnuclear ring. The molecular gas in the host galaxy is distributed in
a rotating disk with intrinsic circular velocity km/s,
inclination deg, and dynamical mass within a radius of kpc. In the inner 100 pc region CO is
distributed in a equatorial bar, whose kinematics is highly perturbed and
consistent with an inflow of gas towards the AGN. This inner CO bar overlaps
with the most obscured, Compton-thick region seen in X-rays. We derive a column
density of in this region,
suggesting that molecular gas may contribute significantly to the AGN
obscuration. We detect a molecular outflow with a total outflow rate , distributed along a bi-conical structure with
size of pc on both sides of the AGN. The bi-conical outflow is also
detected in the emission line at 2.12 m, which traces a warmer
nuclear outflow located within 170 pc from the AGN. This suggests that the
outflow cools with increasing distance from the AGN. We find that the hard
X-ray emitting nuclear region mapped with Chandra is CO-deprived, but filled
with warm molecular gas traced by - thus confirming that the hard
(3-6 keV) continuum and Fe K emission are due to scattering from dense
neutral clouds in the ISM.Comment: Submitted to Ap
Comparison of measurement methods of the front velocity of small-scale debris flows
Debris flow is a gravity-driven process, which is characterized by a travelling dense surge including large boulders, and it is followed by a more fluid tail. These characteristics make difficult the measurement of the mean flow velocity by means of common hydraulic techniques. Different methods can be used at real scale and small-scale to measure the front velocity but a dedicate comparison between available methods is still lacking. This research aims to compare the front velocity measurements in the transport zone of a miniature debris flow using three devices: i) a common digital video camera (29 frames per second); ii) a high speed thermo camera (60 fps); and iii) a laser photoelectric sensors system. The statistical analysis of data has highlighted no significant differences exist between front velocities obtained by means of the video camera and the thermo camera, whereas photocells data statistically differ from those achieved via the other systems. Some lack of data recorded by photocell was documented, while the thermo camera technique did not show significant loss of information being also helpful to detect the kinematic behaviour of single particles. Finally, the tests confirmed the influence of the solid volumetric concentration in the debris-flow mechanics, which promotes, ceteris paribus, the debris-flow slowing down
Quantification of in-channel large wood recruitment through a 3-D probabilistic approach
Large wood (LW) is a relevant factor in physical, chemical, environmental and biological aspects of low order mountain streams system. LW recruitment, in turn, is affected by many physical processes, such as debris flows, shallow landslides, bank erosion, snow- and wind throw, and increases the potential hazard for downstream human population and infrastructures during intense flood events. In spite of that, the LW recruitment quantification and the modelling of related processes are receiving attention only since few years ago, with particular reference to hillslope instabilities which are the dominant source of LW recruitment in mountainous terrains at regional scale. Actually, models based on the infinite slope approach, commonly adopted for slope stability analysis, can be used for estimating probable LW volume and for identifying the most hazardous areas of wood input, transport and deposition. Such models, however, generally request a robust calibration on landslide inventory and tend to overestimate unstable areas and then LW recruitment volumes. On this background, this work proposes a new LW estimation procedure which combines the forest stand characteristics of the entire catchment and a three-dimensional probabilistic slope stability model. The slope stability model overcomes the limits of the infinite slope approach and considers the spatial variability and uncertainty of the model input parameters through a Monte Carlo analysis. The forest stands characteristics allow including the root reinforcement into the stability model as stochastic input parameter, and provide the necessary information to evaluate the forest wood volume prone to be recruited as LW and its position on the hillslopes. The procedure was tested on a small mountainous headwater catchment in the Eastern Italian Alps, covered with pasture and coniferous forest and prone to shallow landslide and debris flow phenomena, especially during the late spring and the early autumn. The results showed how the proposed procedure is very promising. In fact, the estimated LW volume is comparable with the one measured by field surveys. As the procedure used data commonly available, it is of great interest as a tool for forest planning and management, and to predict the effects of forest alterations, both of natural and of anthropic origin (e.g. diseases, fire, clear-cutting or clearing), as well as helping in-channel wood retention structures positioning
Il codice Sessoriano 2
This study aims to be a contribution to the historical reconstruction of the large size biblical witnesses made after the second half of the twelfth-century, i.e. those specimens that in comparison with the Bibbie atlantiche are characterized by a purely imitative connection, as by that time they were devoid of any ideological content. The analysis of the Sessoriano 2 has revealed the deep changes occurred in the oversize holy books dated to the late twelfth-century. Those changes involved methods, techniques of manufacture, as well as the contexts of production. Furthermore, the interdisciplinary approach adopted, in which prevailed the paleographic component, led to a better understanding of the characteristics of the Sessoriano code and to a more precise definition of the geographical and, especially, chronological allocations. So this study proposes a solution to the mixed views among scholars about the interpretation of the subscription written on the last sheet of the manuscript. The accurate paleographic analysis, and the identification of the participation of several hands in the transcription, allowed to establish a positive graphic comparison between the realization of the colophon and the writing of one of the code’s scribes. This hypothesis has contributed to the assignment of the colophon to the same period of the manuscript, allowing the proposal of an ad annum dating and of a precise topographical location
La tradizione manoscritta dell “ars dictaminis” nell’Italia medievale
This volume is dedicated to the study of medieval ars dictaminis. Analyzing several manuscript witnesses, it sheds light on the historical contextualization of the phenomenon and examines the close relationship between ars dictaminis and the political and social system of that time
Encountering Otherness: empirical research on the possibility of development from Cohesion to Coherence in a Chat-based Group Psychotherapy
2.4) e discussi i risultati (par.2.5).
The rest-frame UV-to-optical spectroscopy of APM 08279+5255 - BAL classification and black hole mass estimates
We present the analysis of the rest-frame optical-to-UV spectrum of APM
08279+5255, a well-known lensed broad absorption line (BAL) quasar at . The spectroscopic data are taken with the optical DOLoRes and near-IR
NICS instruments at TNG, and include the previously unexplored range between C
III] 1910 and [O III] 4959,5007. We investigate the
possible presence of multiple BALs by computing "balnicity" and absorption
indexes (i.e. BI, BI and AI) for the transitions Si IV 1400, C IV
1549, Al III 1860 and Mg II 2800. No clear evidence
for the presence of absorption features is found in addition to the already
known, prominent BAL associated to C IV, which supports a high-ionization BAL
classification for APM 08279+5255. We also study the properties of the [O III],
H and Mg II emission lines. We find that [O III] is intrinsically weak
(), as it is typically found in
luminous quasars with a strongly blueshifted C IV emission line (2500 km
s for APM 08279+5255). We compute the single-epoch black hole mass based
on Mg II and H broad emission lines, finding M, with the magnification factor that can
vary between 4 and 100 according to CO and rest-frame UV-to-mid-IR imaging
respectively. Using a Mg II equivalent width (EW)-to-Eddington ratio relation,
the EW \AA\ measured for APM 08279+5255 translates into an
Eddington ratio of 0.4, which is more consistent with . This
magnification factor also provides a value of that is consistent
with recent reverberation-mapping measurements derived from C IV and Si IV.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A&
