As part of a project that aims to identify how science and scientists are represented in the exhibition discourses of Brazilian museological institutions, this exploratory qualitative study presents the analysis ofthe exhibition When All Was Not Ice: New Discoveries on the Antarctic Continent – the first initiative of the National Museum/UFRJ of Brazil after the fire that hit the institution’s headquarters in 2018. To this end, we use the methodologies of technical assessment and qualitative content analysis. We observed that science and scientists appear in a non-stereotyped way, but the scientific collection receives a classic classification treatment from traditional science museums. The results also show an institutional influence on the proposed approach to the exhibition and the importance given to communication with non-specialist audiences.

Rubbing time and bonding performance of one-step adhesives to primary enamel and dentin

Objectives: This study investigated whether increasing the concentration of acidic monomers in one-step adhesives would allow reducing their application time without interfering with the bonding ability to primary enamel and dentin. Material and methods: Experimental one-step self-etch adhesives were formulated with 5 wt% (AD5), 20 wt% (AD20), or 35 wt% (AD35) acidic monomer. The adhesives were applied using rubbing motion for 5, 10, or 20 s. Bond strengths to primary enamel and dentin were tested under shear stress. A commercial etch-and-rinse adhesive (Single Bond 2; 3M ESPE) served as reference. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the morphology of bonded interfaces. Data were analysed at

A New Complex of Palladium(II) With 2-Furoic Hydrazide: Synthesis, Characterization, Theoretical Calculations and Biological Studies

A new complex of palladium was isolated with 2-furoic hydrazide (FH) and characterized by spectroscopic methods. The results show that the ligand is coordinated to palladium by the basic nitrogen of NH2 group and has a general structure of type cis-[Pd(FH)2Cl2]. The structure of palladium(II) complex was optimized and theoretical data show good agreement with the experimental results. The cytotoxic activity was evaluated in a chronic myelogenous leukemia cell line, which revealed that the compound is less active than cisplatin or carboplatin. At 300 g mL−1, the complex presented antimicrobial activity more efficient than ampicillin, chloranfenicol and kanamicyn. (doi: 10.5562/cca2151

Abstract Objectives: This study investigated whether increasing the concentration of acidic monomers in one-step adhesives would allow reducing their application time without interfering with the bonding ability to primary enamel and dentin. Data were analysed at p<0.05. Results: In enamel, AD35 had higher bond strength when rubbed for at least 10 s, while application for 5 s generated lower bond strength. In dentin, increased acidic monomer improved bonding only for 20 s rubbing time. The etch-and-rinse adhesive yielded higher bond strength to enamel and similar bonding to dentin as compared with the self-etch adhesives. The adhesive layer was thicker and more irregular for the etch-and-rinse material, with no appreciable differences among the self-etch systems. Conclusion: Overall, increasing the acidic monomer concentration only led to an increase in bond strength to enamel when the rubbing time was at least 10 s. In dentin, despite the increase in bond strength with longer rubbing times, the results favoured the experimental adhesives compared to the conventional adhesive. Reduced rubbing time of self-etch adhesives should be avoided in the clinical setup

Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone

As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
