In this article we present a content analysis conducted on the 16 highest-rated tv series broadcasted in Spain and produced in Spanish language in 2010. We have analyzed a total of 143 male and 144 female characters. We present the first results of the analysis demonstrating that there is no gender equality in the representations of these series. The dominance in the public space still belongs to the male characters and women are still often occupying less prestigious and traditionally female-centered professions related to serving and taking care of others

The effects of irrigation modernization on the cost recovery of water in the Valencia Region (Spain)
The modernization of the irrigation systems has been the main strategy followed by the regional administration of the Valencia Region to cope with the structural water deficit of the region, which has been particularly severe during the last three decades. These policies have been oriented to the substitution of gravity irrigation systems for drip technology. The technological change has involved an important investment effort, developed by different public administrations and also the farmers and water users associations (WUAs). This transformation, has also involved a change in the structure of costs of the WUAs. This paper analyzes the changes in costs and tariffs of irrigation after
the important investments made in the modernization of irrigation. The effects of subsidies on the percentage of the cost recovery in the services of water for irrigation are also considered. All of them have developed modernization projects in the recent years. It can be concluded that conflict between two objectives proposed by the Water Framework Directive may exist. On the one hand, significant reductions of water supply are observed; meanwhile, on the other hand, the cost recovery percentage diminishes significantly.García Molla, M.; Ortega Reig, MV.; Sanchis Ibor, C.; Avella Reus, LF.
Gene Expression Patterns Distinguish Mortality Risk in Patients with Postsurgical Shock
Producción CientíficaNowadays, mortality rates in intensive care units are the highest of all hospital units. However, there is not a reliable prognostic system to predict the likelihood of death in patients with postsurgical shock. Thus, the aim of the present work is to obtain a gene expression signature to distinguish the low and high risk of death in postsurgical shock patients. In this sense, mRNA levels were evaluated by microarray on a discovery cohort to select the most differentially expressed genes between surviving and non-surviving groups 30 days after the operation. Selected genes were evaluated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in a validation cohort to validate the reliability of data. A receiver-operating characteristic analysis with the area under the curve was performed to quantify the sensitivity and specificity for gene expression levels, which were compared with predictions by established risk scales, such as acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA). IL1R2, CD177, RETN, and OLFM4 genes were upregulated in the non-surviving group of the discovery cohort, and their predictive power was confirmed in the validation cohort. This work offers new biomarkers based on transcriptional patterns to classify the postsurgical shock patients according to low and high risk of death. The results present more accuracy than other mortality risk scores.Instituto de Salud Carlos III (grant PI15/01451)Junta de Castilla y León (grant 1255/A/16)Universidad de Valladolid - Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (grant VA321P18
Enhanced mitochondrial activity reshapes a gut microbiota profile that delays NASH progression
[EN] Background and Aims: Recent studies suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction promotes progression to NASH by aggravating the gut-liver status. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Herein, we hypothesized that enhanced mitochondrial activity might reshape a specific microbiota signature that, when transferred to germ-free (GF) mice, could delay NASH progression. Approach and Results: Wild-type and methylation-controlled J protein knockout (MCJ-KO) mice were fed for 6 weeks with either control or a choline-deficient, L-amino acid–defined, high-fat diet (CDA-HFD). One mouse of each group acted as a donor of cecal microbiota to GF mice, who also underwent the CDA-HFD model for 3 weeks. Hepatic injury, intestinal barrier, gut microbiome, and the associated fecal metabolome were then studied. Following 6 weeks of CDA-HFD, the absence of methylation-controlled J protein, an inhibitor of mitochondrial complex I activity, reduced hepatic injury and improved gut-liver axis in an aggressive NASH dietary model. This effect was transferred to GF mice through cecal microbiota transplantation. We suggest that the specific microbiota profile of MCJ-KO, characterized by an increase in the fecal relative abundance of Dorea and Oscillospira genera and a reduction in AF12, Allboaculum, and [Ruminococcus], exerted protective actions through enhancing short-chain fatty acids, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) metabolism, and sirtuin activity, subsequently increasing fatty acid oxidation in GF mice. Importantly, we identified Dorea genus as one of the main modulators of this microbiota-dependent protective phenotype. Conclusions: Overall, we provide evidence for the relevance of mitochondria–microbiota interplay during NASH and that targeting it could be a valuable therapeutic approach.S
Genome-wide whole blood transcriptome profiling in a large European cohort of systemic sclerosis patients
Objectives The analysis of annotated transcripts
from genome-wide
expression studies may help to
understand the pathogenesis of complex diseases, such
as systemic sclerosis (SSc). We performed a whole blood
(WB) transcriptome analysis on RNA collected in the
context of the European PRECISESADS project, aiming
at characterising the pathways that differentiate SSc
from controls and that are reproducible in geographically
diverse populations.
Methods Samples from 162 patients and 252 controls
were collected in RNA stabilisers. Cases and controls
were divided into a discovery (n=79+163; Southern
Europe) and validation cohort (n=83+89; Central-Western
Europe). RNA sequencing was performed by
an Illumina assay. Functional annotations of Reactome
pathways were performed with the Functional Analysis
of Individual Microarray Expression (FAIME) algorithm.
In parallel, immunophenotyping of 28 circulating cell
populations was performed. We tested the presence
of differentially expressed genes/pathways and the
correlation between absolute cell counts and RNA
transcripts/FAIME scores in regression models. Results
significant in both populations were considered as
replicated.
Results Overall, 15 224 genes and 1277 functional
pathways were available; of these, 99 and 225 were
significant in both sets. Among replicated pathways,
we found a deregulation in type-I
interferon, Toll-like
receptor cascade, tumour suppressor p53 protein
function, platelet degranulation and activation. RNA
transcripts or FAIME scores were jointly correlated with
cell subtypes with strong geographical differences;
neutrophils were the major determinant of gene
expression in SSc-WB
samples.
Conclusions We discovered a set of differentially
expressed genes/pathways validated in two independent
sets of patients with SSc, highlighting a number of
deregulated processes that have relevance for the
pathogenesis of autoimmunity and SSc.EU/EFPIA/Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking PRECISESADS

Endothelial dysfunction is an early indicator of sepsis and neutrophil degranulation of septic shock in surgical patients
Producción CientíficaBackground: Stratification of the severity of infection is currently based on the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, which is difficult to calculate outside the ICU. Biomarkers could help to stratify the severity of infection in surgical patients. Methods: Levels of ten biomarkers indicating endothelial dysfunction, 22 indicating emergency granulopoiesis, and six denoting neutrophil degranulation were compared in three groups of patients in the first 12 h after diagnosis at three Spanish hospitals. Results: There were 100 patients with infection, 95 with sepsis and 57 with septic shock. Seven biomarkers indicating endothelial dysfunction (mid-regional proadrenomedullin (MR-ProADM), syndecan 1, thrombomodulin, angiopoietin 2, endothelial cell-specific molecule 1, vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 and E-selectin) had stronger associations with sepsis than infection alone. MR-ProADM had the highest odds ratio (OR) in multivariable analysis (OR 11·53, 95 per cent c.i. 4·15 to 32·08; P = 0·006) and the best area under the curve (AUC) for detecting sepsis (0·86, 95 per cent c.i. 0·80 to 0·91; P < 0·001). In a comparison of sepsis with septic shock, two biomarkers of neutrophil degranulation, proteinase 3 (OR 8·09, 1·34 to 48·91; P = 0·028) and lipocalin 2 (OR 6·62, 2·47 to 17·77; P = 0·002), had the strongest association with septic shock, but lipocalin 2 exhibited the highest AUC (0·81, 0·73 to 0·90; P < 0·001). Conclusion: MR-ProADM and lipocalin 2 could be alternatives to the SOFA score in the detection of sepsis and septic shock respectively in surgical patients with infection.Instituto de Salud Carlos III (grants PI15/01959, PI15/01451 and PI16/01156
The challenge of the digital divide and elderly in Spanish rural areas. The case of Castilla y León.
This article includes some reflections about the tandem between new technologies, particularly the Internet, and elderly people living in rural areas. This article combines a qualitative (personal interviews and focus groups) andquantitative methodology (analysis of demographic data), aiming to deep about the relationship between relationshipbetween the digital divide and geographical gap for elderly people living in rural areas in Castilla y León. Results obtained from this research show the existence of structural elements in these rural areas but also symbolic aspects often overlooked, which must take into account when implementing intervention projects. This study confirms theneed to attend to the territory as a variable but also the characteristics of those who have greater difficulties in useand access to ICT, and progress towards equal opportunities.
The outcome of boosting mitochondrial activity in alcohol-associated liver disease is organ-dependent.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) accounts for 70% of liver-related deaths in Europe, with no effective approved therapies. Although mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the earliest manifestations of alcohol-induced injury, restoring mitochondrial activity remains a problematic strategy due to oxidative stress. Here, we identify methylation-controlled J protein (MCJ) as a mediator for ALD progression and hypothesize that targeting MCJ may help in recovering mitochondrial fitness without collateral oxidative damage.
APPROACH AND RESULTS
C57BL/6 mice [wild-type (Wt)] Mcj knockout and Mcj liver-specific silencing (MCJ-LSS) underwent the NIAAA dietary protocol (Lieber-DeCarli diet containing 5% (vol/vol) ethanol for 10 days, plus a single binge ethanol feeding at day 11). To evaluate the impact of a restored mitochondrial activity in ALD, the liver, gut, and pancreas were characterized, focusing on lipid metabolism, glucose homeostasis, intestinal permeability, and microbiota composition. MCJ, a protein acting as an endogenous negative regulator of mitochondrial respiration, is downregulated in the early stages of ALD and increases with the severity of the disease. Whole-body deficiency of MCJ is detrimental during ALD because it exacerbates the systemic effects of alcohol abuse through altered intestinal permeability, increased endotoxemia, and dysregulation of pancreatic function, which overall worsens liver injury. On the other hand, liver-specific Mcj silencing prevents main ALD hallmarks, that is, mitochondrial dysfunction, steatosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress, as it restores the NAD + /NADH ratio and SIRT1 function, hence preventing de novo lipogenesis and improving lipid oxidation.
CONCLUSIONS
Improving mitochondrial respiration by liver-specific Mcj silencing might become a novel therapeutic approach for treating ALD.This work was supported by grants from Ministerio de
