    Combined multi-protocols qMRI for thigh muscle analysis: a preliminary study

    Quantitative MRI (qMRI) has been shown to be crucial for assessing organ dysfunction in the body. Usually, in qMRI approaches, a few metrics are extracted to distinguish normal and abnormal tissues. In this study, we coupled four MRI protocols (mDIXON T1, T1 and T2 mapping and DTI) to obtain 34 complementary metrics including 20 shape metrics, 2 texture metrics and 12 water diffusivity metrics for thigh muscle analysis. These metrics were calculated on both thighs to detect a pathological difference between a pair of right and left muscles. The method is based on a dimension reduction method and a projection of shape and diffusivity metrics into a three-dimensional linear latent space, along with two texture metrics. 5 healthy individuals (10 thighs, each thigh 7 muscles, i.e., 4 exors and 3 extensors) were scanned to provide the reference scores. The developed pipeline was used to analyse the pair thighs of 4 patients in order to suggest a specific muscle therapy before total knee arthroplasty (TKA) individually for each of the 7 muscles. Preliminary results from the analysis of thigh muscle texture, shape and diffusivity showed that this qMRI protocol can help to suggest a targeted, patient-specific exercise plan to improve muscle recovery after TKA surgery. More healthy and pathological subjects are needed to confirm these encouraging results

    Potential use of mid-infrared spectrometry to predict cheese yield from milk and to study its genetic variability

En vue d’étudier la variabilité génétique du rendement fromager à l’échelle du cheptel bovin wallon, des méthodes chimiométriques ont été utilisées afin de développer des équations de prédictions basées sur des spectres moyen infrarouge (MIR) pour les rendements fromagers déterminés en laboratoire et exprimés en frais (RdFF) ou en sec (RdFS). Ceux-ci ont été déterminés sur 258 échantillons de lait analysés en spectrométrie MIR. Les équations de prédiction à partir du spectre MIR du lait ont été développées en utilisant la régression des moindres carrés partiels (PLS) avec une validation croisée interne appliquée sur la dérivée première des spectres MIR. Les coefficients de détermination de validation croisée (R²cv) des équations étaient de 0,81 pour les prédictions du RdFF et de 0,82 pour les celles du RdFS. Les rapports des performances sur les variabilités (RPD) étaient égaux à 2,3. Ces résultats peuvent permettre d’envisager une bonne utilité pratique pour leur prédiction respective, notamment dans le cadre de recherches génétiques. Ces équations ont été appliquées sur la base de données spectrales générée dans le cadre du contrôle laitier wallon. Les composantes de la variance ont été estimées séparément pour le RdFF et le RdFS basées sur un modèle animal « contrôles élémentaires » utilisant des régressions aléatoires. Le jeu de données utilisé comportait 51 537 prédictions pour 7 870 vaches primipares Holstein. Les héritabilités journalières moyennes variaient entre 0,31 (au 5ème jour de lactation (JDL)) et 0,59 (au 279ème JDL) pour le RdFF et entre 0,31 (au 5ème JDL) et 0,57 (au 299ème JDL) pour le RdFS.     1,25(OH)2D3 Alters Growth Plate Maturation and Bone Architecture in Young Rats with Normal Renal Function

    Whereas detrimental effects of vitamin D deficiency are known over century, the effects of vitamin D receptor activation by 1,25(OH)2D3, the principal hormonal form of vitamin D, on the growing bone and its growth plate are less clear. Currently, 1,25(OH)2D3 is used in pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease and mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) and is strongly associated with growth retardation. Here, we investigate the effect of 1,25(OH)2D3 treatment on bone development in normal young rats, unrelated to renal insufficiency. Young rats received daily i.p. injections of 1 µg/kg 1,25(OH)2D3 for one week, or intermittent 3 µg/kg 1,25(OH)2D3 for one month. Histological analysis revealed narrower tibial growth plates, predominantly in the hypertrophic zone of 1,25(OH)2D3-treated animals in both experimental protocols. This phenotype was supported by narrower distribution of aggrecan, collagens II and X mRNA, shown by in situ hybridization. Concomitant with altered chondrocyte maturation, 1,25(OH)2D3 increased chondrocyte proliferation and apoptosis in terminal hypertrophic cells. In vitro treatment of the chondrocytic cell line ATDC5 with 1,25(OH)2D3 lowered differentiation and increased proliferation dose and time-dependently. Micro-CT analysis of femurs from 1-week 1,25(OH)2D3-treated group revealed reduced cortical thickness, elevated cortical porosity, and higher trabecular number and thickness. 1-month administration resulted in a similar cortical phenotype but without effect on trabecular bone. Evaluation of fluorochrome binding with confocal microscopy revealed inhibiting effects of 1,25(OH)2D3 on intracortical bone formation. This study shows negative effects of 1,25(OH)2D3 on growth plate and bone which may contribute to the exacerbation of MBD in the CKD pediatric patients

    Melting behaviour of uranium-americium mixed oxides under different atmospheres

    In the context of a comprehensive campaign for the characterisation of transmutation fuels for next generation nuclear reactors, the melting behaviour of mixed uranium-americium dioxides has been experimentally studied for the first time by laser heating, for Am concentrations up to 70 mol. % under different types of atmospheres. Extensive post-melting material characterisations were then performed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron microscopy. The melting temperatures observed for the various compositions follow a markedly different trend depending on the experimental atmosphere. Uranium-rich samples melt at temperatures significantly lower (around 2700 K) when they are laser-heated in a strongly oxidizing atmosphere compressed air at (0.300 ± 0.005) MPa, compared to the melting points (beyond 3000 K) registered for the same compositions in an inert environment (pressurised Ar). This behaviour has been interpreted on the basis of the strong oxidation of such samples in air, leading to lower-melting temperatures. Thus, the melting temperature trend observed in air is characterized, in the purely pseudo-binary dioxide plane, by an apparent maximum melting temperature around 2850 K for 0.3 < x(AmO2) < 0.5. The melting points measured under inert atmosphere uniformly decrease with increasing americium content, displaying an approximately ideal solution behaviour if a melting point around 2386 K is assumed for pure AmO2. In reality, it will be shown that the (U, Am)-oxide system can only be rigorously described in the ternary U-Am-O phase diagram, rather than the UO2-AmO2 pseudo-binary, due to the aforementioned over-oxidation effect in air. Indeed, general departures from the oxygen stoichiometry (Oxygen/Metal ratios ≠ 2.0) have been highlighted by the X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS).     Signatures of technetium oxidation states: a new approach

    A general strategy for the determination of Tc oxidation state by new approach involving X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Tc L-3 edge is shown. A comprehensive series of Tc-99 compounds, ranging from oxidation states I to VII, was measured and subsequently simulated within the framework of crystal-field multiplet theory. The observable trends in the absorption edge energy shift in combination with the spectral shape allow for a deeper understanding of complicated Tc coordination chemistry. This approach can be extended to numerous studies of Tc systems as this method is one of the most sensitive methods for accurate Tc oxidation state and ligand characterization

    Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.
