What If Your Car Would Care? Exploring Use Cases For Affective Automotive User Interfaces
In this paper we present use cases for affective user interfaces (UIs) in
cars and how they are perceived by potential users in China and Germany.
Emotion-aware interaction is enabled by the improvement of ubiquitous sensing
methods and provides potential benefits for both traffic safety and personal
well-being. To promote the adoption of affective interaction at an
international scale, we developed 20 mobile in-car use cases through an
inter-cultural design approach and evaluated them with 65 drivers in Germany
and China. Our data shows perceived benefits in specific areas of pragmatic
quality as well as cultural differences, especially for socially interactive
use cases. We also discuss general implications for future affective automotive
UI. Our results provide a perspective on cultural peculiarities and a concrete
starting point for practitioners and researchers working on emotion-aware
interfaces
Toward polarized antiprotons: Machine development for spin-filtering experiments
The paper describes the commissioning of the experimental equipment and the
machine studies required for the first spin-filtering experiment with protons
at a beam kinetic energy of MeV in COSY. The implementation of a
low- insertion made it possible to achieve beam lifetimes of
s in the presence of a dense polarized hydrogen
storage-cell target of areal density . The developed techniques can be directly
applied to antiproton machines and allow for the determination of the
spin-dependent cross sections via spin filtering

Simulação estocástica de atributos do clima e da produtividade potencial de milho utilizando-se distribuição triangular
The objective of this work was to simulate the potential productivity of maize, through Monte Carlo method, using an agrometeorological stochastic model. The experiment was conduct in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, at 22o42'30''S, 47o38'30''W, and 546 m altitude, the climate of the region is Cwa type, tropical humid. Daily average values of temperature (from 1917 to 2002) and global solar radiation (from 1978 to 2002) were used. Statistical performance index was used to compare observed and simulated data. The probabilistic models developed to simulate temperature and solar radiation averages produced similar values to observed data through triangular distribution, and it can be used in stochastic models to predict maize potential productivity in different dates of sowing.O objetivo deste trabalho foi simular a produtividade potencial da cultura de milho, pelo método de Monte Carlo, utilizando um modelo agrometeorológico estocástico. O experimento foi conduzido em Piracicaba, SP, a 22o42'30''S, 47o38'30''W, e altitude de 546 m, o clima da região é do tipo Cwa (tropical úmido). Foram utilizados os valores médios diários de temperatura (de 1917 a 2002) e radiação solar global (de 1978 a 2002). Para comparar os dados reais com os simulados, foram utilizados índices de desempenho estatístico. Observou-se que os modelos probabilísticos, desenvolvidos para a simulação de dados médios diários de temperatura e de radiação solar global, geraram valores semelhantes aos observados por meio da distribuição triangular, a qual pode ser utilizada em modelo estocástico, para previsão da produtividade potencial de milho, nas diferentes épocas de semeadura
Phase locking the spin precession in a storage ring
This letter reports the successful use of feedback from a spin polarization
measurement to the revolution frequency of a 0.97 GeV/ bunched and polarized
deuteron beam in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) storage ring in order to control
both the precession rate ( kHz) and the phase of the horizontal
polarization component. Real time synchronization with a radio frequency (rf)
solenoid made possible the rotation of the polarization out of the horizontal
plane, yielding a demonstration of the feedback method to manipulate the
polarization. In particular, the rotation rate shows a sinusoidal function of
the horizontal polarization phase (relative to the rf solenoid), which was
controlled to within a one standard deviation range of rad. The
minimum possible adjustment was 3.7 mHz out of a revolution frequency of 753
kHz, which changes the precession rate by 26 mrad/s. Such a capability meets a
requirement for the use of storage rings to look for an intrinsic electric
dipole moment of charged particles
Simulation in manufacturing and business: A review
Copyright @ 2009 Elsevier B.V.This paper reports the results of a review of simulation applications published within peer-reviewed literature between 1997 and 2006 to provide an up-to-date picture of the role of simulation techniques within manufacturing and business. The review is characterised by three factors: wide coverage, broad scope of the simulation techniques, and a focus on real-world applications. A structured methodology was followed to narrow down the search from around 20,000 papers to 281. Results include interesting trends and patterns. For instance, although discrete event simulation is the most popular technique, it has lower stakeholder engagement than other techniques, such as system dynamics or gaming. This is highly correlated with modelling lead time and purpose. Considering application areas, modelling is mostly used in scheduling. Finally, this review shows an increasing interest in hybrid modelling as an approach to cope with complex enterprise-wide systems
Polarizing a stored proton beam by spin flip?
We discuss polarizing a proton beam in a storage ring, either by selective
removal or by spin flip of the stored ions. Prompted by recent, conflicting
calculations, we have carried out a measurement of the spin flip cross section
in low-energy electron-proton scattering. The experiment uses the cooling
electron beam at COSY as an electron target. The measured cross sections are
too small for making spin flip a viable tool in polarizing a stored beam. This
invalidates a recent proposal to use co-moving polarized positrons to polarize
a stored antiproton beam.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
Measurement of the Spin-Dependence of the pbar-p Interaction at the AD-Ring
We propose to use an internal polarized hydrogen storage cell gas target in
the AD ring to determine for the first time the two total spin-dependent pbar-p
cross sections sigma_1 and sigma_2 at antiproton beam energies in the range
from 50 to 450 MeV. The data obtained are of interest by themselves for the
general theory of pbar-p interactions since they will provide a first
experimental constraint of the spin-spin dependence of the nucleon-antinucleon
potential in the energy range of interest. In addition, measurements of the
polarization buildup of stored antiprotons are required to define the optimum
parameters of a future, dedicated Antiproton Polarizer Ring (APR), intended to
feed a double-polarized asymmetric pbar-p collider with polarized antiprotons.
Such a machine has recently been proposed by the PAX collaboration for the new
Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany.
The availability of an intense stored beam of polarized antiprotons will
provide access to a wealth of single- and double-spin observables, thereby

Exclusive Leptoproduction of rho^0 Mesons from Hydrogen at Intermediate Virtual Photon Energies
Measurements of the cross section for exclusive virtual-photoproduction of
rho^0 mesons from hydrogen are reported. The data were collected by the HERMES
experiment using 27.5 GeV positrons incident on a hydrogen gas target in the
HERA storage ring. The invariant mass W of the photon-nucleon system ranges
from 4.0 to 6.0 GeV, while the negative squared four-momentum Q^2 of the
virtual photon varies from 0.7 to 5.0 GeV^2. The present data together with
most of the previous data at W > 4 GeV are well described by a model that
infers the W-dependence of the cross section from the dependence on the Bjorken
scaling variable x of the unpolarized structure function for deep-inelastic
scattering. In addition, a model calculation based on Off-Forward Parton
Distributions gives a fairly good account of the longitudinal component of the

Double-Spin Asymmetry in the Cross Section for Exclusive rho^0 Production in Lepton-Proton Scattering
Evidence for a positive longitudinal double-spin asymmetry = 0.24
+-0.11 (stat) +-0.02 (syst) in the cross section for exclusive diffractive
rho^0(770) vector meson production in polarised lepton-proton scattering was
observed by the HERMES experiment. The longitudinally polarised 27.56 GeV HERA
positron beam was scattered off a longitudinally polarised pure hydrogen gas
target. The average invariant mass of the photon-proton system has a value of
= 4.9 GeV, while the average negative squared four-momentum of the virtual
photon is = 1.7 GeV^2. The ratio of the present result to the
corresponding spin asymmetry in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering is in
agreement with an early theoretical prediction based on the generalised vector
