Two Lane Traffic Simulations using Cellular Automata
We examine a simple two lane cellular automaton based upon the single lane CA
introduced by Nagel and Schreckenberg. We point out important parameters
defining the shape of the fundamental diagram. Moreover we investigate the
importance of stochastic elements with respect to real life traffic.Comment: to be published in Physica A, 19 pages, 9 out of 13 postscript

Effects of oral, smoked, and vaporized cannabis on endocrine pathways related to appetite and metabolism: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, human laboratory study.
As perspectives on cannabis continue to shift, understanding the physiological and behavioral effects of cannabis use is of paramount importance. Previous data suggest that cannabis use influences food intake, appetite, and metabolism, yet human research in this regard remains scant. The present study investigated the effects of cannabis administration, via different routes, on peripheral concentrations of appetitive and metabolic hormones in a sample of cannabis users. This was a randomized, crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Twenty participants underwent four experimental sessions during which oral cannabis, smoked cannabis, vaporized cannabis, or placebo was administered. Active compounds contained 6.9 ± 0.95% (~50.6 mg) ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Repeated blood samples were obtained, and the following endocrine markers were measured: total ghrelin, acyl-ghrelin, leptin, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and insulin. Results showed a significant drug main effect (p = 0.001), as well as a significant drug × time-point interaction effect (p = 0.01) on insulin. The spike in blood insulin concentrations observed under the placebo condition (probably due to the intake of brownie) was blunted by cannabis administration. A significant drug main effect (p = 0.001), as well as a trend-level drug × time-point interaction effect (p = 0.08) was also detected for GLP-1, suggesting that GLP-1 concentrations were lower under cannabis, compared to the placebo condition. Finally, a significant drug main effect (p = 0.01) was found for total ghrelin, suggesting that total ghrelin concentrations during the oral cannabis session were higher than the smoked and vaporized cannabis sessions. In conclusion, cannabis administration in this study modulated blood concentrations of some appetitive and metabolic hormones, chiefly insulin, in cannabis users. Understanding the mechanisms underpinning these effects may provide additional information on the cross-talk between cannabinoids and physiological pathways related to appetite and metabolism
Twitter Based Information Extraction
In the modern world of social media dominance, the microblogs like Twitter and Facebook are probably the best source of up-to-date information. The amount of information available on these platforms is huge, although most of it is unstructured and redundant which makes our task of extracting information from it much more challenging. This automatic extraction of information from noisy sources has opened up new opportunities for querying and analyzing data.
This paper is a review of the research that has been done on extracting information like event dates [1] and classification of information from social networking platforms like Twitter. We present a brief study of the work which shows that extracting useful information from Twitter and other social media platforms is indeed feasible. We provide brief study about the extraction techniques applied by the applications based on this subject like the extraction tasks and the input exploited for extraction, the types of methods of extraction used and the type of output produced

Sex-Specific Effects of a Wartime-Like Radiation Exposure on Cognitive Function.
Evaluating the risk for central nervous system (CNS) effects after whole-body or partial-body irradiation presents challenges due in part to the varied exposure scenarios in the context of occupational, accidental or wartime releases. Risk estimations are further complicated by the fact that robust changes in brain function are unlikely to manifest until significantly late post exposure times. Collectively, the current data regarding CNS radiation risk are conflicting in humans and a survey of the animal model data shows that it is similarly inconsistent. Due to the sparseness of such data, the current study was conducted using male and female mice to evaluate the brain for the delayed effects of a 2 Gy whole-body exposure to c rays starting six months postirradiation. Behavioral testing indicated sex-specific differences in the induction of anxiety-like behaviors and in the ability to abolish fear memories. Molecular analyses showed alterations in post-synaptic protein levels that might affect synaptic plasticity and increased levels of global DNA methylation, suggesting a potential epigenetic mechanism that might contribute to radiation-induced cognitive dysfunction. These data add to the understanding of the CNS response to whole-body irradiation and may lead to improved risk assessment and provide guidance in the development of effective radiation countermeasures to protect military personnel and civilians alike
A comparative study of the use of tiger-specific and heterologous microsatellite markers for population genetic studies of the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)
Comparison of genetic diversity indices of heterologous and species-specific microsatellite loci within a species may provide a panel of appropriate markers for genetic studies, but few studies have carried out such comparisons. We examined and compared the genetic characteristics of tiger-specific and heterologous loci in eight captive Bengal tigers. The mean polymorphic information content (PIC) value of the tiger-specific microsatellite loci (n = 15) was 0.447, and the number of alleles was from 2 to 4 per locus. In comparison, the heterologous microsatellite loci (n = 15) had a mean PIC value of 0.539, and the number of alleles per locus was three to five. Our findings indicate that the heterologous markers have a higher frequency (n = 11) of polymorphic microsatellite loci and number of alleles per locus compared with tiger-specific loci. We pooled the highly polymorphic (PIC > 0.5) tiger-specific loci (n = 5) and heterologous microsatellite loci (n = 11) except one and noted a higher mean observed heterozygosity and PIC values of 0.668 and 0.575, respectively, compared with the heterologous and tiger-specific loci taken alone. Using a locus selection criterion of PIC > 0.5, we recommend a combined panel of 16 highly polymorphic loci for genetic studies of the wild population of the Bengal tigers and suggest that either a combination of tiger-specific and heterologous microsatellite primers or heterologous primers be used in genetic studies related to the ecology, biology, socio-biology and behavior of Bengal tigers as >13 loci are needed in such studies. Keywords: Bengal tiger, highly polymorphic, tiger-specific, heterologous, microsatellite loci
Unified View of Damage leaves Planimetry & Analysis Using Digital Images Processing Techniques
The detection of leaf diseases in plants generally involves visual
observation of patterns appearing on the leaf surface. However, there are many
diseases that are distinguished based on very subtle changes in these visually
observable patterns. This paper attempts to identify plant leaf diseases using
image processing techniques. The focus of this study is on the detection of
citrus leaf canker disease. Canker is a bacterial infection of leaves. Symptoms
of citrus cankers include brown spots on the leaves, often with a watery or
oily appearance. The spots (called lesions in botany) are usually yellow. It is
surrounded by a halo of the leaves and is found on both the top and bottom of
the leaf. This paper describes various methods that have been used to detect
citrus leaf canker disease. The methods used are histogram comparison and
k-means clustering. Using these methods, citrus canker development was detected
based on histograms generated based on leaf patterns. The results thus obtained
can be used, after consultation with experts in the field of agriculture, to
identify suitable treatments for the processes used
Macroscopic Dynamics of Multi-Lane Traffic
We present a macroscopic model of mixed multi-lane freeway traffic that can
be easily calibrated to empirical traffic data, as is shown for Dutch highway
data. The model is derived from a gas-kinetic level of description, including
effects of vehicular space requirements and velocity correlations between
successive vehicles. We also give a derivation of the lane-changing rates. The
resulting dynamic velocity equations contain non-local and anisotropic
interaction terms which allow a robust and efficient numerical simulation of
multi-lane traffic. As demonstrated by various examples, this facilitates the
investigation of synchronization patterns among lanes and effects of on-ramps,
off-ramps, lane closures, or accidents.Comment: For related work see

Large Eddy Simulation of acoustic pulse propagation and turbulent flow interaction in expansion mufflers
A novel hybrid pressure-based compressible solver is developed and validated for low Mach number acoustic flow simulation. The solver is applied to the propagation of an acoustic pulse in a simple expansion muffler, a configuration frequently employed in HVAC and automotive exhaust systems. A set of benchmark results for experimental analysis of the simple expansion muffler both with and without flow are obtained to compare attenuation in forced pulsation for various mean-flow velocities. The experimental results are then used for validation of the proposed pressure-based compressible solver. Compressible, Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulation of a muffler with a mean through flow is conducted and results are presented to demonstrate inherent limitations associated with this approach. Consequently, a mixed synthetic inflow boundary condition is developed and validated for compressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of channel flow. The mixed synthetic boundary is then employed for LES of a simple expansion muffler to analyse the flow-acoustic and acoustic-pulse interactions inside the expansion muffler. The improvement in the prediction of vortex shedding inside the chamber is highlighted in comparison to the URANS method. Further, the effect of forced pulsation on flow-acoustic is observed in regard to the shift in Strouhal number inside the simple expansion muffler
A perspective on multinational enterprise’s national identity dilemma
This conceptual paper identifies gaps and contributes to the literature on ‘identity’ dilemmas faced by multinational enterprises operating in a globalised world. Various characteristics and business strategies of multinational enterprises are delineated and analysed through the lens of social identity theory and international business concepts such as market and institutional logic. Our analysis, based on multiple cases, and derived from a variety of industries and countries, associates the identity dilemma to informed business strategy. Our findings suggest that while multinational enterprises face identity dilemmas that they sometimes use to their advantage, it also poses several challenges. Through our conceptualisation, we derive five distinct propositions to shape future research directions
