Characterizing Power Consumption of Dual-Frequency GNSS of a Smartphone

Location service is one of the most widely used features on a smartphone. More and more apps are built based on location services. As such, demand for accurate positioning is ever higher. Mobile brand Xiaomi has introduced Mi 8, the world's first smartphone equipped with a dual-frequency GNSS chipset which is claimed to provide up to decimeter-level positioning accuracy. Such unprecedentedly high location accuracy brought excitement to industry and academia for navigation research and development of emerging apps. On the other hand, there is a significant knowledge gap on the energy efficiency of smartphones equipped with a dual-frequency GNSS chipset. In this paper, we bridge this knowledge gap by performing an empirical study on power consumption of a dual-frequency GNSS phone. To the best our knowledge, this is the first experimental study that characterizes the power consumption of a smartphone equipped with a dual-frequency GNSS chipset and compares the energy efficiency with a single-frequency GNSS phone. We demonstrate that a smartphone with a dual-frequency GNSS chipset consumes 37% more power on average outdoors, and 28% more power indoors, in comparison with a singe-frequency GNSS phone.Comment: Published in IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM

Increasing younger customers in restaurants through marketing

    Get PDF
This research is conducted in ‘The Original Thai Restaurant’, to increase younger customers for the restaurant. A study into this topic is very significant, as the younger generation account for the majority of purchasing power compared with others. A mixed approach has been taken for the research, including qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected by distributing questionnaires to customers, and the restaurant manager was interviewed to get more information regarding the strategies of the restaurant. Bar graphs and pie charts were used to analyse the data collected from the questionnaires. Several scopes were studied as part of the literature review, to prepare for conducting the research. The purpose of the research is to find out reasons why fewer younger people are coming to the restaurant compared to the older generation, and to recommend marketing strategies to resolve the problem. The lack of entertainment facilities and an expensive menu were found to be a cause for the lack of millennial customers in the restaurant. Providing Wi-Fi, and live music were solutions to increase millennials in the restaurant

Two-photon excitation spectroscopy of 1,5--Diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene using phase modulation

We have used two-photon Fourier transform spectroscopy to investigate the first singlet excited state (S1) of a prototypical polyene molecule 1,5 -- Diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene. As the S1 state in the polyenes is a one-photon forbidden transition, its structure of the vibrational levels cannot be studied using resonant linear excitation. Although this level is accessible with two-photon excitation, previous studies done by using wavelength tunable pulsed lasers did not have enough resolution to investigate the details of the vibrational levels. In Fourier transform spectroscopy, one uses a pair of laser beams to excite the sample. The measurements are done by varying the time delay between the pulses. The spectral resolution is given by the inverse of the maximum time delay rather than the spectral width of the pulses. We have used the method to investigate the vibrational levels of the S1 state. In our implementation, we have used a phase modulation technique to carry out the measurements in the rotating frame, which require fewer data points along the time delay thereby significantly reducing the measurement time

On near-optimal time samplings for initial data best approximation

Leveraging on the work of De Vore and Zuazua, we further explore their methodology and deal with two open questions presented in their paper. We show that for a class of linear evolutionary PDEs the admissible choice of relevant parameters used to construct the near-optimal sampling sequence is not influenced by the spectrum of of the operator controlling the spatial part of the PDE, but only by its order. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to extend their algorithm to a simple version of a non-autonomous heat equation in which the heat diffusivity coefficient depends explicitly on time

Magnetic properties of Fe/Cu multilayers prepared using pulsed-current electrodeposition

    Get PDF
[Fe (tFe) nm/Cu (tCu) nm]N multilayer films were prepared using pulsed-current electrodeposition method. The role of the pulsed-current deposition and Fe and Cu layer thicknesses on the magnetic properties was investigated. The microstructure of the multilayer films is dependent on the thicknesses of both the Fe and Cu layers. The saturation magnetization of the multilayers strongly correlated with the crystalline structure of Fe at the interface of Fe and Cu layers. Multidimensional Generalized Automatic Sequences and Shape-symmetric Morphic Words

An infinite word is S-automatic if, for all n>=0, its (n + 1)st letter is the output of a deterministic automaton fed with the representation of n in the considered numeration system S. In this extended abstract, we consider an analogous definition in a multidimensional setting and present the connection to the shape-symmetric infinite words introduced by Arnaud Maes. More precisely, for d>=2, we state that a multidimensional infinite word x : N^d \to \Sigma over a finite alphabet \Sigma is S-automatic for some abstract numeration system S built on a regular language containing the empty word if and only if x is the image by a coding of a shape-symmetric infinite word
