Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder that causes chronic hyperglycemia with disturbances in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, and alterations in microcirculation. We evaluate the criteria for the interpretation of the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in the Hospital Nacional Docente Madre-Ni˜no ‘‘San Bartolomé’’ in Lima, Peru, and determine the percentages of pre-diabetic patients, diabetics that should not be included in the test, and those with alterations in their glucose curve during the biochemical determinations. To this purpose, a non-experimental, prospective cross-sectional analytic study was performed in 1271 patients, included in the study to comply with the guidelines and recommendations of the ADA and the CLSI POCT12-A3 guide, which were processed in the Biochemical Autoanalyzer Biosystems A25. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 20.0 statistical analyzer, and respecting ethical diabetics. The main results are 1.97% diabetic and 13.85% pre-diabetic. The LJ phenomenon occurred with 6.45% (alteration in glucose curve after oral load decreases plasma glucose concentration determination after 60 min and returns at relatively higher than the basal concentration levels at 180 min) and 5.19% were poorly studied, including a >110 mg/dl baseline (p = <0.05). We determined a high rate of pre-diabetic patients and a reduced rate of diabetes coincident with Qiao et al. We highlight the usefulness of the OGTT, which must be rigorously evaluated, and reaffirm the importance of the LJ phenomenon as it may interfere with the final results of unsolved events, and evidence the importance of interindividual biological variability

Introduction: Tuberculosis continues to be one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Prevention measures are key to prevent its spread and contagion among health professionals. The objective of the present study was to determine the self-care attitudes about tuberculosis in the nursing staff after a hospital infectious outbreak in Perú. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in nursing staff (n= 94; technical staff n= 44, 46.8%). Volunteer nursing staff > 18 years old, of both sexes, and who work in the Emergency Department were included. The 15-item questionnaire from Valle (2017) was used to estimate knowledge and attitudes about self-care in nursing staff in 3 dimensions: prevention, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis. Results: The average age of the participants was 44.7±8.8 years, 88.3 % were women, and the average working time was 11.2 ± 7.8 years. Difference was found between the years of service, among technicians (8.55 ± 7.94 years) and nursing professionals (13.48 ± 6.98 years) (p< 0.001). A hundred percent of nurses presented attitudes of acceptance of self-care in all dimensions; 4.5 % and 27.3% of nursing technicians presented attitudes of indifference in the tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment dimension (p= 0.001). Conclusions: There are favorable attitudes in the nursing staff about self-care of tuberculosis after an outbreak in a hospital in Lima, although in nursing technicians we report attitudes of indifference in the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis

The aim of this study was to characterize carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-Kp) isolates recovered from adults and children with severe bacteremia in a Peruvian Hospital in June 2018. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by disc/gradient diffusion and broth microdilution when necessary. Antibiotic resistance mechanisms were evaluated by PCR and DNA sequencing. Clonal relatedness was assessed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Plasmid typing was performed with a PCR-based method. Thirty CR-Kp isolates were recovered in June 2018. All isolates were non-susceptible to all -lactams, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, while mostly remaining susceptible to colistin, tigecycline, levofloxacin and amikacin. All isolates carried the blaNDM-1 gene and were extended spectrum -lactamase (ESBL) producers. PFGE showed four different pulsotypes although all isolates but two belonged to the ST348 sequence type, previously reported in Portugal. blaNDM-1 was located in an IncFIB-M conjugative plasmid. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an New Delhi metallo- -lactamase (NDM)-producing K. pneumoniae recovered from both children and adults in Lima, Peru, as well as the first time that the outbreak strain ST348 is reported in Peru and is associated with NDM. Studies providing epidemiological and molecular data on CR-Kp in Peru are essential to monitor their dissemination and prevent further spread

Fruticultura orgánica en el trópico: Situación y ejemplos de Mesoamérica

    Get PDF

In this work, bacterial behavior on dense and porous titanium substrates is discussed. Porous titanium was fabricated by a space holder technique using 50 vol , NH4HCO3 with particle sizes between 250 and 355 amp; 956;m . These substrates were coated by sulfonated PEEK termed SPEEK . Characterization of the porous substrate was carried out using the Archimedes Method, Image Analysis, and three dimensional X ray Micro Computed Tomography including total and interconnected porosity, equivalent diameter, and pore shape factor , as well as mechanical characterization specifically stiffness and yield strength . A detailed study was performed here to investigate the influence of substrate porosity on the adhesion and proliferation of E. coli, MRSA, and P. aeruginosa common causes of orthopedic device associated infections . Bacterial colonization was examined in terms of the initial bacterial concentration, as well as bacterial adherence to and growth on the surface and inside the pores. Results suggest that fully dense titanium supported the least bacterial colonization, while the porous titanium promoted bacterial growth in the medium and inside the cavities. Furthermore, the SPEEK coating deposited onto the samples inhibited bacteria growth inside the porous materials. In this manner, this study showed for the first time that SPEEK could have potential antibacterial properties to offset the increase in bacteria growth commonly observed in porous material

Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.
