    Nonresonant effects in one- and two-photon transitions

    We investigate nonresonant contributions to resonant Rayleigh scattering cross sections of atoms. The problematic nonresonant contributions set a limit to the accuracy to which atomic spectra determine energy levels. We discuss the off-resonance effects in one-photon transitions. We also show that off-resonance contributions for the 1S-2S two-photon transition in atomic hydrogen are negligible at current and projected levels of experimental accuracy. The possibility of a differential measurement for the detection of off-resonance effects in one-photon transitions in atomic hydrogen is discussed.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX, 3 figures; submitted to Can.     Some Recent Advances in Bound-State Quantum Electrodynamics

    We discuss recent progress in various problems related to bound-state quantum electrodynamics: the bound-electron g factor, two-loop self-energy corrections and the laser-dressed Lamb shift. The progress relies on various advances in the bound-state formalism, including ideas inspired by effective field theories such as Nonrelativistic Quantum Electrodynamics.     Vortex in a d-wave superconductor at low temperatures

    A systematic perturbation theory is developed to describe the magnetic field-induced subdominant ss- and dxyd_{xy}-wave order parameters in the mixed state of a dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor, enabling us to obtain, within weak-coupling BCS theory, analytic results for the free energy of a d-wave superconductor in an applied magnetic field H_{c1}\ltsim H\ll H_{c2} from TcT_c down to very low temperatures. Known results for a single isolated vortex in the Ginzburg-Landau regime are recovered, and the behavior at low temperatures for the subdominant component is shown to be qualitatively different. In the case of subdominant dxyd_{xy} pair component, superfluid velocity gradients and an orbital Zeeman effect are shown to compete in determining the vortex state, but for realistic field strengths the latter appears to be irrelevant. On this basis, we argue that recent predictions of a low-temperature phase transition in connection with recent thermal conductivity measurements are unlikely to be correct.Comment: 20 RevTEX pages, 6 EPS figures; considerably expanded versio

    Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy, yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse momenta (p_T), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, non-statistical fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high p_T. The results are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be described in terms of ordinary color neutral hadrons.Comment: 510 authors, 127 pages text, 56 figures, 1 tables, LaTeX.     Saturation of azimuthal anisotropy in Au + Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62 - 200 GeV

    New measurements are presented for charged hadron azimuthal correlations at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV. They are compared to earlier measurements obtained at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV and in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 17.2 GeV. Sizeable anisotropies are observed with centrality and transverse momentum (p_T) dependence characteristic of elliptic flow (v_2). For a broad range of centralities, the observed magnitudes and trends of the differential anisotropy, v_2(p_T), change very little over the collision energy range sqrt(s_NN) = 62-200 GeV, indicating saturation of the excitation function for v_2 at these energies. Such a saturation may be indicative of the dominance of a very soft equation of state for sqrt(s_NN) = 62-200 GeV.Comment: 432 authors, 7 pages text, 4 figures, REVTeX4.
