    Influence of technostress on academic performance of university medicine students in peru during the covid-19 pandemic

    The current study aims to validate and apply an instrument to assess the relationship between communication overload, social overload, technostress, exhaustion and academic performance. We performed a cross-sectional, analytical study of 2286 university medical students to assess the influence of technostress as a mediator of social media overload, communication overload and mental exhaustion and its detrimental effect on the academic performance of university students in Peru during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research model was validated using partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to establish the influence of variables on the model. Communication and social overload were found to positively influence technostress by correlations of 0.284 and 0.557, respectively. Technostress positively influenced exhaustion by 0.898, while exhaustion negatively influenced academic performance by-0.439. Bootstrapping demonstrated that the path coefficients of the research model were statistically significant. The research outcomes may help university managers understand students’ technostress and develop strategies to improve the balanced use of technology for their daily academic activities.Revisión por pare

    Transmisión domiciliaria de SARS-CoV-2: revisión sistemática y metaanálisis

    Background: Public health policies for decreasing the incidence, transmission, and mortality of COVID-19 focus on extradomiciliary measures and neglect transmission within the home. We aimed to estimate the rate of secondary home attack of SARS-CoV-2. Material and Methods: We conducted a systematic review of observational studies that evaluated home transmission of SARS-CoV-2 published between December 2019 and September 1, 2021 in Medline, Scopus, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases. The definition of household contact referred to any person living in the same house as the index patient.  The risk of bias was assessed with a modified version of the Newcastle-Ottawa tool. A meta-analysis was performed with a random-effects model to calculate the household attack rate, subanalysis with sociodemographic, epidemiological variables, and comorbidities, as well as meta-regression. Results: Of 4491 studies found, 44 were included in the analysis. The overall household secondary attack rate was 27.7% (95%CI: 23% - 32.7%). Furthermore, it was higher when the index case was symptomatic (28.3%, 95%CI: 8.1% - 54.7%) or the contact was an older adult (42.3%, 95%CI: 32% - 52.9%). Likewise, the rate was higher when the household contacts had diabetes mellitus (57.4%, 95%CI: 45.2% - 69.3%) and arterial hypertension (51.1%, 95%CI: 38% - 64.1%). Conclusions: The SARS-CoV-2 household secondary attack rate was 27.7%, being higher when there was an adult index case, older adult contact and contact with diabetes mellitus or hypertension.Introducción: Las políticas de salud pública para la disminución de la incidencia, transmisión y mortalidad de la COVID-19 se enfocan en medidas extradomiciliarias y descuidan el contagio dentro del hogar. El objetivo fue estimar la tasa de ataque secundario domiciliario de SARS-CoV-2. Material y Métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática de estudios observacionales que evaluaron la transmisión domiciliaria de SARS-CoV-2 publicados entre diciembre de 2019 y el 1 setiembre de 2021 en las bases de datos Medline, Scopus, LILACS y Google Scholar. La definición de contacto domiciliario se refirió a toda persona que habitaba la misma vivienda que el paciente índice.  El riesgo de sesgo fue evaluado con una versión modificada de la escala Newcastle-Ottawa. Se realizó un metaanálisis con un modelo de efectos aleatorios para calcular la tasa de ataque domiciliaria, subanálisis con variables sociodemográficas, epidemiológicas y comorbilidades, así como metaregresión. Resultados: De 4491 estudios encontrados, 44 fueron incluidos en el análisis. La tasa de ataque secundario domiciliario general fue de 27.7% (IC95%: 23% - 32.7%). Además, fue mayor cuando el caso índice era sintomático (28.3%, IC95%: 8.1% - 54.7%) o el contacto era adulto mayor (42.3%, IC95%: 32% - 52.9%). Asimismo, la tasa fue mayor cuando los contactos domiciliarios presentaban diabetes mellitus (57.4%, IC95%: 45.2% - 69.3%) e hipertensión arterial (51.1%, IC95%: 38% - 64.1%). Conclusiones: La tasa de ataque secundario domiciliario de SARS-CoV-2 fue de 27.7%, siendo mayor al tener un caso índice adulto, contacto adulto mayor y contacto con diabetes mellitus o hipertensión arterial

    The Peru approach against the COVID-19 infodemic: Insights and strategies

    The COVID-19 epidemic has spawned an "infodemic,"with excessive and unfounded information that hinders an appropriate public health response. This perspective describes a selection of COVID-19 fake news that originated in Peru and the government's response to this information. Unlike other countries, Peru was relatively successful in controlling the infodemic possibly because of the implementation of prison sentences for persons who created and shared fake news. We believe that similar actions by other countries in collaboration with social media companies may offer a solution to the infodemic problem.Revisión por pare

    Self-medication practices during the COVID-19 pandemic among the adult population in Peru: A cross-sectional survey

    Self-medication impacts both negatively and positively the health of people, which has become evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study aimed to assess the prevalence of self-medicated drugs used for respiratory symptoms, as COVID-19 preventive, for its symptoms or once tested positive. To determine the perception of symptom relief and demographic variables that promote self-medication in Peru. We performed a cross-sectional, analytical, multicenter study in 3792 study respondents on the use, the reason for use, and perception of relief after the use of six drugs during the quarantine period. An online questionnaire was developed, pretested and submitted to the general public. Multivariable logistic regression was used to ascertain factors that influence an individual's desire to self-medicate, associations were considered significant at p < 0.05 and using region (coast, mountain and jungle) as cluster group. The majority of respondents self-medicated with acetaminophen for respiratory symptoms and mainly because they had a cold or flu. It was observed that all the surveyed drugs (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, azithromycin, penicillin, antiretrovirals and hydroxychloroquine) were consumed for various symptoms including: fever, fatigue, cough, sneezing, muscle pain, nasal congestion, sore throat, headache and breathing difficulty. Over 90% of respondents perceived relief of at least one symptom. Multivariable logistic regression showed that older people have a higher frequency of antiretroviral self-medication, respondents who currently have a job had a higher frequency of penicillin self-medication, and that respondents from the Andes consumed less acetaminophen, while the ones from the rainforest consumed it more. There were significant percentages of self-medication, including drugs without sufficient scientific evidence. Age, region where one lived and job status were variables associated with self-medication frequency. Continuous awareness and sensitization about the risks of self-medication are warranted.Revisión por pare

    Large-Scale Streamwise Vortices in Turbulent Channel Flow Induced by Active Wall Actuations

Direct numerical simulations of turbulent flow in a plane channel using spanwise alternatively distributed strips (SADS) are performed to investigate the characteristics of large-scale streamwise vortices (LSSVs) induced by small-scale active wall actuations, and their role in suppressing flow separation. SADS control is obtained by alternatively applying out-of-phase control (OPC) and in-phase control (IPC) to the wall-normal velocity component of the lower channel wall, in the spanwise direction. Besides the non-controlled channel flow simulated as a reference, four controlled cases with 1, 2, 3 and 4 pairs of OPC/IPC strips are studied at M = 0.2 and Re = 6,000, based on the bulk velocity and the channel half height. The case with 2 pairs of strips, whose width is Δz+ = 264 based on the friction velocity of the non-controlled case, is the most effective in terms of generating large-scale motions. It is also found that the OPC (resp. IPC) strips suppress (resp. enhance) the coherent structures and that leads to the creation of a vertical shear layer, which is responsible for the LSSVs presence. They are in a statistically steady state and their cores are located between two neighbouring OPC and IPC strips. These motions contribute significantly to the momentum transport in the wall-normal and spanwise directions showing potential for flow separation suppression

    Father's occupational exposure to carcinogenic agents and childhood acute leukemia: a new method to assess exposure (a case-control study)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Medical research has not been able to establish whether a father's occupational exposures are associated with the development of acute leukemia (AL) in their offspring. The studies conducted have weaknesses that have generated a misclassification of such exposure. Occupations and exposures to substances associated with childhood cancer are not very frequently encountered in the general population; thus, the reported risks are both inconsistent and inaccurate. In this study, to assess exposure we used a new method, an exposure index, which took into consideration the industrial branch, specific position, use of protective equipment, substances at work, degree of contact with such substances, and time of exposure. This index allowed us to obtain a grade, which permitted the identification of individuals according to their level of exposure to known or potentially carcinogenic agents that are not necessarily specifically identified as risk factors for leukemia. The aim of this study was to determine the association between a father's occupational exposure to carcinogenic agents and the presence of AL in their offspring.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From 1999 to 2000, a case-control study was performed with 193 children who reside in Mexico City and had been diagnosed with AL. The initial sample-size calculation was 150 children per group, assessed with an expected odds ratio (OR) of three and a minimum exposure frequency of 15.8%. These children were matched by age, sex, and institution with 193 pediatric surgical patients at secondary-care hospitals. A questionnaire was used to determine each child's background and the characteristics of the father's occupation(s). In order to determine the level of exposure to carcinogenic agents, a previously validated exposure index (occupational exposure index, OEI) was used. The consistency and validity of the index were assessed by a questionnaire comparison, the sensory recognition of the work area, and an expert's opinion.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The adjusted ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were 1.69 (0.98, 2.92) during the preconception period; 1.98 (1.13, 3.45) during the index pregnancy; 2.11 (1.17, 3.78) during breastfeeding period; 2.17 (1.28, 3.66) after birth; and 2.06 (1.24, 3.42) for global exposure.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first study in which an OEI was used to assess a father's occupational exposure to carcinogenic agents as a risk factor for the development of childhood AL in his offspring. From our results, we conclude that children whose fathers have been exposed to a high level of carcinogenic agents seem to have a greater risk of developing acute leukemia. However, confounding factors cannot be disregarded due to an incomplete control for confounding.</p

    Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay B0→K∗0μ+μ−

    The angular distribution and differential branching fraction of the decay B 0→ K ∗0 μ + μ − are studied using a data sample, collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1. Several angular observables are measured in bins of the dimuon invariant mass squared, q 2. A first measurement of the zero-crossing point of the forward-backward asymmetry of the dimuon system is also presented. The zero-crossing point is measured to be q20=4.9±0.9GeV2/c4 , where the uncertainty is the sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties. The results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions

    Search for the decay Bs0→D*∓π±

    A search for the decay Bs0→D*∓π± is presented using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0  fb-1 of pp collisions collected by LHCb. This decay is expected to be mediated by a W-exchange diagram, with little contribution from rescattering processes, and therefore a measurement of the branching fraction will help us to understand the mechanism behind related decays such as Bs0→π+π- and Bs0→DD- . Systematic uncertainties are minimized by using B0→D*∓π± as a normalization channel. We find no evidence for a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(Bs0→D*∓π±)<6.1(7.8)×10-6 at 90% (95%) confidence level

    Measurements of the branching fractions of B+→ppK+ decays

    The branching fractions of the decay B+ → pp̄K+ for different intermediate states are measured using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1, collected by the LHCb experiment. The total branching fraction, its charmless component Mpp̄ < 2.85 GeV/c2 and the branching fractions via the resonant cc̄ states η c(1S) and ψ(2S) relative to the decay via a J/ψ intermediate state are [Equation not available: see fulltext.] Upper limits on the B + branching fractions into the η c(2S) meson and into the charmonium-like states X(3872) and X(3915) are also obtained
