    Bilateral branch pulmonary artery valve implantation in repaired tetralogy of fallot

    BackgroundTranscatheter, bilateral branch pulmonary artery (PA) valve implantation is a novel treatment for patients with severe pulmonary insufficiency and oversized right ventricle (RV) outflow tract. There is scarce data on efficacy and safety of this approach.MethodsThis was a retrospective study of 8 patients with repaired tetralogy of fallot (TOF) who underwent bilateral branch PA valve implantation. Demographics, echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, and axial imaging data were reviewed. Variables were compared by a paired sample t‐test.ResultsAll patients were adult sized (weight 43–99 kg) with oversized RV outflow tract not suitable for conventional transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation. Staged bare metal PA stenting followed by valve implantation (interval 3–5 months) was technically successful in 7 patients with one stent embolization. In another patient, proximal stent migration prevented placement of bilateral pulmonary valve stents. There were a total of 14 valved branch PA stents placed (Melody valve n = 9, Sapien XT n = 2, Sapien 3 n = 3). In the 7 patients undergoing successful branch pulmonary valve placement, at median follow up of 10 months (range 3 months to 6 years), 13 (93%) valves had none/trivial insufficiency on echocardiography. Prevalve and postvalve implantation cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in five patients showed significant reduction of indexed RV end‐diastolic volume (152 ± 27 to 105 ± 15 mL/m2, P < .001).ConclusionsTranscatheter, bilateral branch PA valve implantation was technically feasible with satisfactory efficacy and safety in patients with repaired TOF, severe pulmonary insufficiency, and oversized RV outflow tracts. Elimination of pulmonary insufficiency with this method resulted in reduced RV end‐diastolic volume.     Overdensities of 24um Sources in the Vicinities of High-Redshift Radio Galaxies

    We present a statistical study of the environments of 63 high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) between redshifts 1<z<5.2, using the 24um, waveband of the MIPS instrument aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. Using a counts-in-cell analysis, a statistically significant source overdensity is found in 1.75arcmin radius circular cells centred on the HzRGs when compared to reference fields. We report an average overdensity of delta (= {N}_{targets} / {N}_{reference}) = 2.2 +/- 1.2 at a flux density cut of f24um=0.3mJy. This result implies that HzRGs are likely to lie in protoclusters of active and star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Over 95% of our targeted HzRGs lie in higher than average density fields. Further, 20 (32%) of our selected fields are found to be overdense to at least a 3sigma significance, of which 9 are newly identified protocluster candidates. We observe a weak correlation between redshift and 24um, source density, and discuss the populations being probed at different redshifts. In our uniformly selected sample, which was designed to cover two orders of magnitude in radio luminosity throughout z=1-4, we find that the 24um, source density does not depend on radio luminosity. We also compare this result with recent work describing IRAC source overdensities around the same HzRGs and find correlations between the results.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&

    A z~3 radio galaxy and its protocluster: evidence for a superstructure?

    We present spectroscopic follow-up observations of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) selected in the field surrounding the radio galaxy MRC0316-257 at z~3.13 (0316). Robust spectroscopic redshifts are determined for 20 out of 24 objects. Three of the spectroscopically confirmed galaxies have 3.12<z<3.13 indicating that these objects reside in a protocluster structure previously found around the radio galaxy. An additional 5 objects are found 1600 km/s blue-shifted with respect to the main protocluster structure. This is in addition to three [OIII] emitters found at this redshift in a previous study. This is further evidence that a structure exists directly in front of the 0316 protocluster. We estimate that the foreground structure is responsible for half of the surface overdensity of LBGs found in the field as a whole. The foreground structure is associated with a strong surface density peak 1.4 Mpc to the North-West of the radio galaxy and a 2D Kolmogorov-Smirnov test indicates that the spatial distributions of the 0316 and foreground galaxies differ at the 3 sigma level. In addition, we compare the properties of protocluster, foreground structure and field galaxies, but we find no significant differences. In terms of the nature of the two structures, a merger scenario is a possible option. Simple merger dynamics indicates that the observed relative velocity of 1600 km/s can be reproduced if the two structures have masses of ~5x10^14 Msun and have starting separations of around 2.5 to 3 Mpc. It is also possible that the foreground structure is unrelated to the 0316 protocluster in which case the two structures will not interact before z=0.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    A SINFONI view of flies in the Spiderweb: a galaxy cluster in the making

    The environment of the high-z radio galaxy PKS 1138-262 at z~2.2 is a prime example of a forming galaxy cluster. We use deep SINFONI data to perform a detailed study of the kinematics of the galaxies within 60 kpc of the radio core and we link this to the kinematics of the protocluster on the megaparsec scale. Identification of optical emission lines shows that 11 galaxies are at the redshift of the protocluster. The density of line emitters is more than an order of magnitude higher in the core of the protocluster than the larger scale environment. This implies a matter overdensity in the core of delta_m~70 which is similar to the outskirts of local galaxy clusters. The velocity distribution of the confirmed satellite galaxies shows a broad, double-peaked velocity structure with sigma=1360+/-206 km/s. A similar broad, double-peaked distribution was found in a previous study targeting the large scale protocluster structure, indicating that a common process is acting on both small and large scales. Including all spectroscopically confirmed protocluster galaxies, a velocity dispersion of 1013+/-87 km/s is found. We show that the protocluster has likely decoupled from the Hubble flow and is a dynamically evolved structure. Comparison to the Millenium simulation indicates that the protocluster velocity distribution is consistent with that of the most massive haloes at z~2, but we rule out that the protocluster is a fully virialized structure based on dynamical arguments and its X-ray luminosity. Comparison to merging haloes in the Millennium simulation shows that the structure as observed in and around the Spiderweb galaxy is best interpreted as being the result of a merger between two massive haloes. We propose that this merger can result in an increase in star formation and AGN activity in the protocluster core and is possibly an important stage in the evolution of massive cD galaxies.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures.     A galaxy populations study of a radio-selected protocluster at z~3.1

    We present a population study of several types of galaxies within the protocluster surrounding the radio galaxy MRC0316-257 at z~3.1. In addition to the known population of Ly_alpha emitters (LAEs) and [OIII] emitters, we use colour selection techniques to identify protocluster candidates that are Lyman break galaxies (LBG) and Balmer break galaxies (BBGs). The radio galaxy field contains an excess of LBG candidates, with a surface density 1.6\pm0.3 times larger than found for comparable blank fields. This surface overdensity corresponds to an LBG volume overdensity of ~8\pm4. The BBG photometric redshift distribution peaks at the protocluster's redshift, but we detect no significant surface overdensity of BBG. This is not surprising because a volume overdensity similar to the LBGs would have resulted in a surface density of ~1.2 that found in the blank field. This could not have been detected in our sample. Masses and star formation rates of the candidate protocluster galaxies are determined using SED fitting. These properties are not significantly different from those of field galaxies. The galaxies with the highest masses and star formation rates are located near the radio galaxy, indicating that the protocluster environment influences galaxy evolution at z~3. We conclude that the protocluster around MRC0316-257 is still in the early stages of formation.Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Searching for large-scale structures around high-redshift radio galaxies with Herschel

    This paper presents the first results of a far-infrared search for protocluster-associated galaxy overdensities using the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REciever (SPIRE) instrument on-board the Herschel Space Observatory. Large (∌400 arcmin2) fields surrounding 26 powerful high-redshift radio galaxies (2.0 1028.5 WHz−1) are mapped at 250, 350 and 500 Όm to give a unique wide-field sample. On average, the fields have a higher than expected, compared to blank fields, surface density of 500 Όm sources within 6 comoving Mpc of the radio galaxy. The analysis is then restricted to potential protocluster members only, which are identified using a far-infrared colour selection; this reveals significant overdensities of galaxies in two fields, neither of which are previously known protoclusters. The probability of finding two overdensities of this size by chance, given the number of fields observed, is 5 × 10−4. Overdensities here exist around radio galaxies with L500 MHz ≳ 1029 WHz−1 and z 1014 M⊙. However, the large uncertainty in the redshift estimation means that it is possible that these far-infrared overdensities consist of several structures across the redshift range searched

    H-alpha emitters in z~2 proto-clusters: evidence for faster evolution in dense environments

    This is a study of H-alpha emitters in two dense galaxy proto-clusters surrounding radio galaxies at z~2. We show that the proto-cluster surrounding MRC 1138-262 contains 14+/-2 times more H-alpha candidates than the average field (9 sigma significance), and the z=2.35 radio galaxy 4C+10.48 is surrounded by 12+/-2 times more emitters than the field (5 sigma), so it is also likely to reside in a dense proto-cluster environment. We compared these H-alpha emitters, situated in dense environments, to a control field sample selected from 3 separate fields forming a total area of 172 arcmin^2. We constructed and compared H-alpha and rest-frame R continuum luminosity functions of the emitters in both environments. The star formation density is on average 13 times greater in the proto-clusters than the field at z~2, so the total star formation rate within the central 1.5Mpc of the proto-clusters exceeds 3000Msun/yr. However, we found no significant difference in the shape of the H-alpha luminosity functions, implying that environment does not substantially affect the strength of the H-alpha line from strongly star forming galaxies. The proto-cluster emitters are typically 0.8mag brighter in rest-frame R continuum than field emitters, implying they are twice as massive as their field counterparts at the same redshift. We also show the proto-cluster galaxies have lower specific star formation rates than field galaxies, meaning the emitters in the dense environments formed more of their stars earlier than the field galaxies. We conclude that galaxy growth in the early Universe was accelerated in dense environments, and that cluster galaxies differed from field galaxies even before the cluster had fully formed.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    [OIII] emitters in the field of the MRC 0316-257 protocluster

    Venemans et al. (2005) found evidence for an overdensity of Ly-alpha emission line galaxies associated with the radio galaxy MRC 0316-257 at z=3.13 indicating the presence of a massive protocluster. Here, we present the results of a search for additional star-forming galaxies and AGN within the protocluster. Narrow-band infrared imaging was used to select candidate [O III] emitters in a 1.1 x 1.1 Mpc^2 region around the radio galaxy. Thirteen candidates have been detected. Four of these are among the previously confirmed sample of Ly-alpha galaxies, and an additional three have been confirmed through follow-up infrared spectroscopy. The three newly confirmed objects lie within a few hundred km/s of each other, but are blueshifted with respect to the radio galaxy and Ly-alpha emitters by ~2100 km/s. Although the sample is currently small, our results indicate that the radio-selected protocluster is forming at the centre of a larger, ~60 co-moving Mpc super-structure. On the basis of an HST/ACS imaging study we calculate dust-corrected star-formation rates and investigate morphologies and sizes of the [O III] candidate emitters. From a comparison of the star formation rate derived from UV-continuum and [O III] emission, we conclude that at least two of the [O III] galaxies harbour an AGN which ionized the O+ gas.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures.
