Applications of BGP-reflection functors: isomorphisms of cluster algebras
Given a symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix , for any index , one
can define an automorphism associated with of the field of rational functions of independent indeterminates It is an isomorphism between two cluster algebras associated to the
matrix (see section 4 for precise meaning). When is of finite type,
these isomorphisms behave nicely, they are compatible with the BGP-reflection
functors of cluster categories defined in [Z1, Z2] if we identify the
indecomposable objects in the categories with cluster variables of the
corresponding cluster algebras, and they are also compatible with the
"truncated simple reflections" defined in [FZ2, FZ3]. Using the construction of
preprojective or preinjective modules of hereditary algebras by Dlab-Ringel
[DR] and the Coxeter automorphisms (i.e., a product of these isomorphisms), we
construct infinitely many cluster variables for cluster algebras of infinite
type and all cluster variables for finite types.Comment: revised versio
"âWe just want to be treated with respect!â: Using restorative approaches and the dramatic arts to build positive relationships between the police and young people"
This article explores the application of an ambitious arts-based restorative intervention that has been applied in a direct response to perceived issues with procedural justice, legitimacy and community relations between police and young people. The research focuses on a series of Youth Forums that took place in the West of England, employed as an attempt to improve strained relationships between both parties. It reports on detailed ethnographic research of the Forum processes and procedures presenting this primary evidence in light of the existing literature on police legitimacy and procedural justice in police-youth encounters. The findings suggest that community-based arts programmes can be a powerful and effective tool for challenging entrenched views with the potential to improve future encounters between police and young people; and that the relevance and effectiveness of arts-based interventions can be increased by combining with restorative justice principles
Donât make me angry, you wouldnât like me when Iâm angry: volitional choices to act or inhibit are modulated by subliminal perception of emotional faces
Volitional action and self-controlâfeelings of acting according to oneâs own intentions and in being control of oneâs own actionsâare fundamental aspects of human conscious experience. However, it is unknown whether high-level cognitive control mechanisms are affected by socially salient but nonconscious emotional cues. In this study, we manipulated free choice decisions to act or withhold an action by subliminally presenting emotional faces: In a novel version of the Go/NoGo paradigm, participants made speeded button-press responses to Go targets, withheld responses to NoGo targets, and made spontaneous, free choices to execute or withhold the response for Choice targets. Before each target, we presented emotional faces, backwards masked to render them nonconscious. In Intentional trials, subliminal angry faces made participants more likely to voluntarily withhold the action, whereas fearful and happy faces had no effects. In a second experiment, the faces were made supraliminal, which eliminated the effects of angry faces on volitional choices. A third experiment measured neural correlates of the effects of subliminal angry faces on intentional choice using EEG. After replicating the behavioural results found in Experiment 1, we identified a frontal-midline theta componentâassociated with cognitive control processesâwhich is present for volitional decisions, and is modulated by subliminal angry faces. This suggests a mechanism whereby subliminally presented âthreatâ stimuli affect conscious control processes. In summary, nonconscious perception of angry faces increases choices to inhibit, and subliminal influences on volitional action are deep seated and ecologically embedded
Artificial membranes for membrane protein purification, functionality and structure studies.
Membrane proteins represent one of the most important targets for pharmaceutical companies. Unfortunately, technical limitations have long been a major hindrance in our understanding of the function and structure of such proteins. Recent years have seen the refinement of classical approaches and the emergence of new technologies that have resulted in a significant step forward in the field of membrane protein research. This review summarizes some of the current techniques used for studying membrane proteins, with overall advantages and drawbacks for each method
Polygenic Risk Scores for Prediction of Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Subtypes.
Stratification of women according to their risk of breast cancer based on polygenic risk scores (PRSs) could improve screening and prevention strategies. Our aim was to develop PRSs, optimized for prediction of estrogen receptor (ER)-specific disease, from the largest available genome-wide association dataset and to empirically validate the PRSs in prospective studies. The development dataset comprised 94,075 case subjects and 75,017 control subjects of European ancestry from 69 studies, divided into training and validation sets. Samples were genotyped using genome-wide arrays, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected by stepwise regression or lasso penalized regression. The best performing PRSs were validated in an independent test set comprising 11,428 case subjects and 18,323 control subjects from 10 prospective studies and 190,040 women from UK Biobank (3,215 incident breast cancers). For the best PRSs (313 SNPs), the odds ratio for overall disease per 1 standard deviation in ten prospective studies was 1.61 (95%CI: 1.57-1.65) with area under receiver-operator curve (AUC) = 0.630 (95%CI: 0.628-0.651). The lifetime risk of overall breast cancer in the top centile of the PRSs was 32.6%. Compared with women in the middle quintile, those in the highest 1% of risk had 4.37- and 2.78-fold risks, and those in the lowest 1% of risk had 0.16- and 0.27-fold risks, of developing ER-positive and ER-negative disease, respectively. Goodness-of-fit tests indicated that this PRS was well calibrated and predicts disease risk accurately in the tails of the distribution. This PRS is a powerful and reliable predictor of breast cancer risk that may improve breast cancer prevention programs
