Knowledge of the heart: ethical implications of sociological research with emotion

    Get PDF
Emotions have been the subject of social science research for many decades. Predominantly, this research has been orientated around research on emotion. While this genre of research focuses on emotion as a topic of inquiry, I propose that research with emotion can contribute to different ways of understanding social experience. Due to a different epistemological foundation, different methodological approaches are required with different ethical implications. This article will define research with and on emotion, before providing examples of the former. Based on these examples, this article explores ethical implications. The article concludes with a brief reflection on the benefits of sociological research with emotion, against which the many challenges should be assessed

Public Service Law: Privatization’s Unexpected Offspring

What has occurred in the United Kingdom is a move toward the development of a body of legal doctrine closer to the concept of public service enshrined in other European legal systems. Prosser asserts that it has been largely due to the creation of regulators independent of government and enterprise, thus making some legal framework to structure relations inevitable

    Rethinking the Specious Present

    Get PDF
In this chapter I argue that despite its current popularity the doctrine of the specious present, or at least every current version of it, should be rejected. I describe two alternative accounts, which deal with experiences of two different kinds of change. The first is what I call the dynamic snapshot theory, which accounts for the way we experience continuous changes such as motion and other motion-like phenomena. The second account deals with the way we experience discontinuous changes, those for which there is no finite rate of change. However I then argue that much of the current debate implicitly presupposes a problematic Cartesian view about the nature of conscious experience. If this view is rejected – as I think it should be – then a different kind of account emerges that avoids commitment both to the specious present and to its main current rival, the cinematic view

Greedy Graph Colouring is a Misleading Heuristic

State of the art maximum clique algorithms use a greedy graph colouring as a bound. We show that greedy graph colouring can be misleading, which has implications for parallel branch and bound

    Multi-threading a state-of-the-art maximum clique algorithm

We present a threaded parallel adaptation of a state-of-the-art maximum clique algorithm for dense, computationally challenging graphs. We show that near-linear speedups are achievable in practice and that superlinear speedups are common. We include results for several previously unsolved benchmark problems
