    The influence of culture on parental styles in social vulnerability contexts: A influência da cultura nos estilos parentais em contextos de vulnerabilidade social

    Los objetivos del presente trabajo son: 1) analizar si las relaciones entre las dimensiones de la parentalidad y el ajuste de los niños en lo que se refiere a estrategias de afrontamiento, se mantienen constantes en una muestra argentina y otra española en contextos de pobreza, 2) comparar las dimensiones de la parentalidad en los dos grupos en estudio; 3) determinar la eficiencia de la parentalidad través del estudio de su influencia en la forma de afrontar la amenaza de los niños. Se administró la escala Graffar ? Méndez Castellano (Méndez-Castellano & Méndez, 1994), que permite una caracterización socio económica de la población; la Escala Argentina de Percepción de la Relación con los Padres para Niños de 8 a 12 años (Richaud 2007a) y el Cuestionario Argentino de afrontamiento para niños (Richaud, 2006), a una muestra de 458 niños argentinos y españoles de 10 a 12 años. Se utilizaron correlaciones para analizar las relaciones entre las dimensiones parentales y las estrategias de afrontamiento de los niños y análisis múltiples de variancia (MANOVA) para estudiar si existían diferentes estilos de relaciones de los padres con los hijos en los dos grupos: Argentina y España y para analizar si existían diferencias en las estrategias de afrontamiento en los niños de los dos grupos estudiados. Los resultados indican la aceptación de ambos padres se relacionó positivamente, en ambos grupos, con las estrategias más funcionales del afrontamiento y que las dimensiones parentales negativas, tanto el control patológico paterno como la negligencia de ambos padres, se relacionaron positivamente, en ambos grupos, con el descontrol emocional de los niños, mientras que se observa un tipo de relación parental de mayor autonomía extrema-negligencia, para el grupo argentino y de mayor control extremo para el grupo español. Al mismo tiempo se encontró que los niños del grupo argentino adoptan estrategias de afrontamiento menos eficientes y que implican un mayor conflicto emocional, que los niños del grupo español.The objectives of this study are: (a) to analyze if the relationship between parenting dimensions and children adjustment regarding coping strategies are similar in Argentinian and Spanish samples within poverty contexts; (b) to compare parental dimensions in the two groups studied, and (c) to determine the efficiency of parenting through the study of their influence in children coping strategies. The Graffar-Méndez Castellano Scale (Méndez-Castellano & Méndez, 1994), that brings a socioeconomic description of the population; an Argentinian Scale of Children Perception of Parental Relationships for 8 to 12 years of age (Richaud, 2007a), and the Argentine Questionnaire of Coping for children (Richaud, 2006) were administered to a sample of458 Spanish and Argentinian children from 8 to 12 years old. Correlations were carried out to analyze the relationships between parenting dimensions and children coping strategies in both groups, and MANOVA, to study if there were different parental dimensions in the two groups &mash;Argentina and Spain&mash;, and to analyze if there were differences in children coping strategies. The results indicate that correlational pattern is similar in both groups, but parental dimensions are different for each culture, being the Argentinian parents more neglectful than Spanish parents. At the same time, Argentinian children adopt coping strategies less efficient that the Spanish children ones, involving in that way a greater emotional conflict.Fil: Richaud, Maria Cristina.     Psychometric Evidence of a Multidimensional Measure of Prosocial Behaviors for Spanish Adolescents

    Prior theories and scholars rarely distinguished between distinct forms of prosocial behaviors (i.e., actions intended to benefit others) and most scholars operationalize prosocial behaviors as a global construct. Furthermore, stringent tests of psychometric properties of prosocial behavior measures are rare, especially in countries other than the United States. The present study was designed to examine the structure and functions of a multidimensional measure of prosocial behaviors in youth from Spain. Six hundred and 66 adolescents (46% girls; M age = 15.33 years, SD = 0.47 years) from Valencia, Spain, completed the Prosocial Tendencies Measure-Revised (PTM-R), measures of sympathy, perspective taking, and a global measure of prosocial behavior. Results showed that the hypothesized 6-factor structure of the PTM-R had good fit, the best fit model as compared to alternative models, and that there were several unique patterns of relations between specific forms of prosocial behaviors and sympathy, perspective taking, and the global measure of prosocial behavior. Furthermore, although there were significant gender differences in some forms of prosocial behaviors, the structure of the PTM-R was equivalent across gender.     Discovery of spirooxadiazoline oxindoles with dual-stage antimalarial activity

    © 2022 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS.Malaria remains a prevalent infectious disease in developing countries. The first-line therapeutic options are based on combinations of fast-acting artemisinin derivatives and longer-acting synthetic drugs. However, the emergence of resistance to these first-line treatments represents a serious risk, and the discovery of new effective drugs is urgently required. For this reason, new antimalarial chemotypes with new mechanisms of action, and ideally with activity against multiple parasite stages, are needed. We report a new scaffold with dual-stage (blood and liver) antiplasmodial activity. Twenty-six spirooxadiazoline oxindoles were synthesized and screened against the erythrocytic stage of the human malaria parasite P. falciparum. The most active compounds were also tested against the liver-stage of the murine parasite P. berghei. Seven compounds emerged as dual-stage antimalarials, with IC50 values in the low micromolar range. Due to structural similarity with cipargamin, which is thought to inhibit blood-stage P. falciparum growth via inhibition of the Na + efflux pump PfATP4, we tested one of the most active compounds for anti-PfATP4 activity.     The Fornax Cluster through S-PLUS

    The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) aims to map ≈ 9300 deg2of the southernsky using the Javalambre filter system of 12 optical bands, 5 Sloan-like filters and 7 narrow-band filters centeredon several prominent stellar features ([OII], Ca H+K, D4000, Hδ, Mgb, Hα and CaT). S-PLUS is carried outwith the T80-South, a new robotic 0.826 m telescope located on CTIO, equipped with a wide field of view camera(2 deg2).     Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown in Eating Disorders: A Multicentre Collaborative International Study

    Background. The COVID-19 lockdown has had a significant impact on mental health. Patients with eating disorders (ED) have been particularly vulnerable. Aims. (1) To explore changes in eating-related symptoms and general psychopathology during lockdown in patients with an ED from various European and Asian countries; and (2) to assess differences related to diagnostic ED subtypes, age, and geography. Methods. The sample comprised 829 participants, diagnosed with an ED according to DSM-5 criteria from specialized ED units in Europe and Asia. Participants were assessed using the COVID-19 Isolation Scale (CIES). Results. Patients with binge eating disorder (BED) experienced the highest impact on weight and ED symptoms in comparison with other ED subtypes during lockdown, whereas individuals with other specified feeding and eating disorders (OFSED) had greater deterioration in general psychological functioning than subjects with other ED subtypes. Finally, Asian and younger individuals appeared to be more resilient. Conclusions. The psychopathological changes in ED patients during the COVID-19 lockdown varied by cultural context and individual variation in age and ED diagnosis. Clinical services may need to target preventive measures and adapt therapeutic approaches for the most vulnerable patients

    COVID Isolation Eating Scale (CIES): Analysis of the impact of confinement in eating disorders and obesity-A collaborative international study

    Confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to have a serious and complex impact on the mental health of patients with an eating disorder (ED) and of patients with obesity. The present manuscript has the following aims: (1) to analyse the psychometric properties of the COVID Isolation Eating Scale (CIES), (2) to explore changes that occurred due to confinement in eating symptomatology; and (3) to explore the general acceptation of the use of telemedicine during confinement. The sample comprised 121 participants (87 ED patients and 34 patients with obesity) recruited from six different centres. Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) tested the rational-theoretical structure of the CIES. Adequate goodness-of-fit was obtained for the confirmatory factor analysis, and Cronbach alpha values ranged from good to excellent. Regarding the effects of confinement, positive and negative impacts of the confinement depends of the eating disorder subtype. Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and with obesity endorsed a positive response to treatment during confinement, no significant changes were found in bulimia nervosa (BN) patients, whereas Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED) patients endorsed an increase in eating symptomatology and in psychopathology. Furthermore, AN patients expressed the greatest dissatisfaction and accommodation difficulty with remote therapy when compared with the previously provided face-to-face therapy.     The Genetic Structure of Leishmania infantum Populations in Brazil and Its Possible Association with the Transmission Cycle of Visceral Leishmaniasis

    Leishmania infantum is the etiologic agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the Americas, Mediterranean basin and West and Central Asia. Although the geographic structure of L. infantum populations from the Old World have been described, few studies have addressed the population structure of this parasite in the Neotropical region. We employed 14 microsatellites to analyze the population structure of the L. infantum strains isolated from humans and dogs from most of the Brazilian states endemic for VL and from Paraguay. The results indicate a low genetic diversity, high inbreeding estimates and a depletion of heterozygotes, which together indicate a predominantly clonal breeding system, but signs of sexual events are also present. Three populations were identified from the clustering analysis, and they were well supported by F statistics inferences and partially corroborated by distance-based. POP1 (111 strains) was observed in all but one endemic area. POP2 (31 strains) is also well-dispersed, but it was the predominant population in Mato Grosso (MT). POP3 (31 strains) was less dispersed, and it was observed primarily in Mato Grosso do Sul (MS). Strains originated from an outbreak of canine VL in Southern Brazil were grouped in POP1 with those from Paraguay, which corroborates the hypothesis of dispersal from Northeastern Argentina and Paraguay. The distribution of VL in MS seems to follow the west-east construction of the Bolivia-Brazil pipeline from Corumbá municipality. This may have resulted in a strong association of POP3 and Lutzomyia cruzi, which is the main VL vector in Corumbá, and a dispersion of this population in this region that was shaped by human interference. This vector also occurs in MT and may influence the structure of POP2.     Dengue: a continuing global threat.

    Dengue fever and dengue haemorrhagic fever are important arthropod-borne viral diseases. Each year, there are ∼50 million dengue infections and ∼500,000 individuals are hospitalized with dengue haemorrhagic fever, mainly in Southeast Asia, the Pacific and the Americas. Illness is produced by any of the four dengue virus serotypes. A global strategy aimed at increasing the capacity for surveillance and outbreak response, changing behaviours and reducing the disease burden using integrated vector management in conjunction with early and accurate diagnosis has been advocated. Antiviral drugs and vaccines that are currently under development could also make an important contribution to dengue control in the future

    MAMMALS IN PORTUGAL : A data set of terrestrial, volant, and marine mammal occurrences in P ortugal

    Mammals are threatened worldwide, with 26% of all species being includedin the IUCN threatened categories. This overall pattern is primarily associatedwith habitat loss or degradation, and human persecution for terrestrial mam-mals, and pollution, open net fishing, climate change, and prey depletion formarine mammals. Mammals play a key role in maintaining ecosystems func-tionality and resilience, and therefore information on their distribution is cru-cial to delineate and support conservation actions. MAMMALS INPORTUGAL is a publicly available data set compiling unpublishedgeoreferenced occurrence records of 92 terrestrial, volant, and marine mam-mals in mainland Portugal and archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira thatincludes 105,026 data entries between 1873 and 2021 (72% of the data occur-ring in 2000 and 2021). The methods used to collect the data were: live obser-vations/captures (43%), sign surveys (35%), camera trapping (16%),bioacoustics surveys (4%) and radiotracking, and inquiries that represent lessthan 1% of the records. The data set includes 13 types of records: (1) burrowsjsoil moundsjtunnel, (2) capture, (3) colony, (4) dead animaljhairjskullsjjaws, (5) genetic confirmation, (6) inquiries, (7) observation of live animal (8),observation in shelters, (9) photo trappingjvideo, (10) predators dietjpelletsjpine cones/nuts, (11) scatjtrackjditch, (12) telemetry and (13) vocalizationjecholocation. The spatial uncertainty of most records ranges between 0 and100 m (76%). Rodentia (n=31,573) has the highest number of records followedby Chiroptera (n=18,857), Carnivora (n=18,594), Lagomorpha (n=17,496),Cetartiodactyla (n=11,568) and Eulipotyphla (n=7008). The data setincludes records of species classified by the IUCN as threatened(e.g.,Oryctolagus cuniculus[n=12,159],Monachus monachus[n=1,512],andLynx pardinus[n=197]). We believe that this data set may stimulate thepublication of other European countries data sets that would certainly contrib-ute to ecology and conservation-related research, and therefore assisting onthe development of more accurate and tailored conservation managementstrategies for each species.
