Effect of support oxygen storage capacity on the catalytic performance of Rh nanoparticles for CO2 reforming of methane

The effects of the metal oxide support on the activity, selectivity, resistance to carbon deposition and high temperature oxidative aging on the Rh-catalyzed dry reforming of methane (DRM) were investigated. Three Rh catalysts supported on oxides characterized by very different oxygen storage capacities and labilities (γ-Al 2O 3, alumina-ceria-zirconia (ACZ) and ceria-zirconia (CZ)) were studied in the temperature interval 400–750 °C under both integral and differential reaction conditions. ACZ and CZ promoted CO 2 conversion, yielding CO-enriched synthesis gas. Detailed characterization of these materials, including state of the art XPS measurements obtained via sample transfer between reaction cell and spectrometer chamber, provided clear insight into the factors that determine catalytic performance. The principal Rh species detected by post reaction XPS was Rh 0, its relative content decreasing in the order Rh/CZ(100%)>Rh/ACZ(72%)>Rh/γ-Al 2O 3(55%). The catalytic activity followed the same order, demonstrating unambiguously that Rh 0 is indeed the key active site. Moreover, the presence of CZ in the support served to maintain Rh in the metallic state and minimize carbon deposition under reaction conditions. Carbon deposition, low in all cases, increased in the order Rh/CZ < Rh/ACZ < Rh/γ-Al 2O 3 consistent with a bi-functional reaction mechanism whereby backspillover of labile lattice O 2− contributes to carbon oxidation, stabilization of Rh 0 and modification of its surface chemistry; the resulting O vacancies in the support providing centers for dissociative adsorption of CO 2. The lower apparent activation energy observed with CZ-containing samples suggests that CZ is a promising support component for use in low temperature DRM

Overview and future challenges of nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB) design in Southern Europe

Get PDF
In times of great transition of the European construction sector to energy efficient and nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB), a market observation containing qualitative and quantitative indications should help to fill out some of the current gaps concerning the EU 2020 carbon targets. Next to the economic challenges, there are equally important factors that hinder renovating the existing residential building stock and adding newly constructed high performance buildings. Under these circumstances this paper summarises the findings of a cross-comparative study of the societal and technical barriers of nZEB implementation in 7 Southern European countries. The study analyses the present situation and provides an overview on future prospects for nZEB in Southern Europe. The result presents an overview of challenges and provides recommendations based on available empirical evidence to further lower those barriers in the European construction sector. The paper finds that the most Southern European countries are poorly prepared for nZEB implementation and especially to the challenge opportunity of retrofitting existing buildings. Creating a common approach to further develop nZEB targets, concepts and definitions in synergy with the climatic, societal and technical state of progress in Southern Europe is essential. The paper provides recommendations for actions to shift the identified gaps into opportunities for future development of climate adaptive high performance buildings. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury after acupuncture sessions

No full text
Rhabdomyolysis is usually caused by muscle injury, drugs or alcohol and presents with muscle weakness and pain. It is characterized by rise in serum creatine kinase, aminotransferases and electrolytes as well as myoglobinuria. Myoglobinuria may cause acute kidney injury by direct proximal tubule cytotoxicity, renal vasoconstriction, intraluminal cast formation and distal tubule obstruction. Muscle pain and weakness as well as vascular injury have been reported after acupuncture. We report a case of severe rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury after acupuncture sessions

The extensive use of synthetic insecticides in agriculture poses a great risk for human health and the ecosystem, and mandates the development of safer alternatives derived from natural products. In the present study, we assessed the larvicidal effect of Pistacia lentiscus fruits, leaves, and bark extracts and their components on larvae of a major vine pest, Lobesia botrana. Pistacia lentiscus is an evergreen shrub or small tree possessing significant medicinal value with numerous therapeutic uses since antiquity. Using petri dish residual exposure and topical application bioassays we demonstrated that the fruit extract of P. lentiscus and its metabolites were toxic on L. botrana larvae. Extracts from leaves and bark showed no effect. Βioassay-guided fractionation of P. lentiscus fruit hexane extract led to the identification of its constituents with insecticidal properties on L. botrana larvae. Specifically, we have identified that the main contributor to the bioactivity of the hexane extract of P. lentiscus fruits is its major fraction, PLFHe2 (76.25%). Furthermore, we have found that PLFHe2 is a mixture of triglycerides and that the fatty acids responsible for the observed toxicity are oleic and linoleic acid

In fact, the program is capable of manipulating in a certain way the measurements from the Excel files and by using these it can create a graph, showing the relation between the height of the medium voltage cable and the alteration of the ambient temperature. In the first chapter, there is an introduction in the power systems and a first approach in the parts, which constitute the transportation and distribution grids of electrical power. Moreover, the mechanical characteristics of the cables and the corresponding mathematical formulas are depicted, which define these characteristics. In the second chapter, the purpose of the thesis is presented in detail and the operation of the program is described briefly. In the third chapter, the methodology, which resulted in the measurements and the diagrams of the acceptable height of the cables with the intersection size of 16 mm2 and 35 mm2 (medium tension) is analyzed. In the fourth chapter, the calculation program is described. The code of the program is demonstrated by using both flow charts as well as explaining the commands of Visual Basic. In the fifth chapter, the conclusions of the thesis are presented. In Annex A, the form of the Excel files is defined, in order to be suitable for the correct function of the calculation program. Furthermore, the location in which the files have to be saved is determined, so as the program can operate properly. In Annex B, the code of the two programs in Visual Basic is presented. In Annex C, the operation of the two programs is shown as a manual. In Annex D, a brief reference to the law that defines the permitted height of the cables is presented.Μαρία Σ. ΜπέτσηΑικατερίνη Ν.
