El trabajo se hizo con una muestra no estratificada de docentes de ciencias que frecuentan los espacios académicos del Planetario de Barranquilla, encontrando cómo incide la ecología conceptual de los sujetos en la evolución de sus representacionesThis article told about an study made in two stages; an exploratory one, from which we characterized the mental representations about the universe of science teachers and the elements that explain the universe included by them in their cosmological models; and the other one experimental, where we applied a methodological strategy inspired by common points of the theories of the mental models of Johnson-Laird and of the conceptual fields of Gérard Vergnaud whose objective was to promote the evolution of those mental representations bringing those who built representations near to a greater level of knowledge on the theories and recent cosmological models. The work was done with a sample stratified not science teacher who frequent spaces academics Planetarium Barranquilla, finding how affects the ecology conceptual of the subjects in the evolution of their performance

The Effects of 1-Hz rTMS on Emotional Behavior and Dendritic Complexity of Mature and Newly Generated Dentate Gyrus Neurons in Male Mice

Low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (1-Hz rTMS) is a promising noninvasive tool for the treatment of depression. Hippocampal neuronal plasticity is thought to play a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of depressive disorders and the mechanism of action of antidepressant treatments. We investigated the effect of 1-Hz rTMS treatment on hippocampal dentate gyrus structural plasticity and related emotional behaviors modifications. Experimentally, adult male mice received either five days of 1-Hz rTMS or Sham stimulation. After stimulation, the mice underwent a battery of tests for anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors. We also tested the effect of treatment on mature and newly generated granule cell dendritic complexity. Our data showed that 1-Hz rTMS induced structural plasticity in mature granule cells, as evidenced by increased dendritic length and number of intersections. However, the stimulation did not increase the proliferation of the dentate gyrus progenitor cells. On the contrary, the stimulated mice showed increased dendritic complexity of newly generated neurons. Moreover, 1-Hz rTMS resulted in antidepressant-like effects in the tail suspension test, but it did not affect anxiety-like behaviors. Therefore, our results indicate that 1-Hz rTMS modulates dentate gyrus morphological plasticity in mature and newly generated neurons. Furthermore, our data provide some evidence of an association between the antidepressant-like activity of 1-Hz rTMS and structural plasticity in the hippocampus

Searching for a light Fermiophobic Higgs Boson at the Tevatron

We propose new production mechanisms for light fermiophobic Higgs bosons (hfh_f) with suppressed couplings to vector bosons (VV) at the Fermilab Tevatron. These mechanisms (e.g. qqH±hfqq'\to H^\pm h_f) are complementary to the conventional process qqVhfqq'\to Vh_f, which suffers from a strong suppression of 1/tan2β1/\tan^2\beta in realistic models with a hfh_f. The new mechanisms extend the coverage at the Tevatron Run II to the larger tanβ\tan\beta region, and offer the possibility of observing new event topologies with up to 4 photons.Comment: 15 pages, including 5 eps-figure

Abell 41: shaping of a planetary nebula by a binary central star?

We present the first detailed spatio-kinematical analysis and modelling of the planetary nebula Abell 41, which is known to contain the well-studied close-binary system MT Ser. This object represents an important test case in the study of the evolution of planetary nebulae with binary central stars as current evolutionary theories predict that the binary plane should be aligned perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the nebula. Deep narrowband imaging in the light of [NII], [OIII] and [SII], obtained using ACAM on the William Herschel Telescope, has been used to investigate the ionisation structure of Abell 41. Longslit observations of the H-alpha and [NII] emission were obtained using the Manchester Echelle Spectrometer on the 2.1-m San Pedro M\'artir Telescope. These spectra, combined with the narrowband imagery, were used to develop a spatio-kinematical model of [NII] emission from Abell 41. The best fitting model reveals Abell 41 to have a waisted, bipolar structure with an expansion velocity of ~40km\s at the waist. The symmetry axis of the model nebula is within 5\degr of perpendicular to the orbital plane of the central binary system. This provides strong evidence that the close-binary system, MT Ser, has directly affected the shaping of its nebula, Abell 41. Although the theoretical link between bipolar planetary nebulae and binary central stars is long established, this nebula is only the second to have this link, between nebular symmetry axis and binary plane, proved observationally.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRA

Multi-wavelength diagnostic properties of Galactic Planetary Nebulae detected by GLIMPSE-I

We uniformly analyze 136 optically detected PNe and candidates from the GLIMPSE-I survey in order to to develop robust, multi-wavelength, classification criteria to augment existing diagnostics and provide pure PN samples. PNe represent powerful astrophysical probes. They are important dynamical tracers, key sources of ISM chemical enrichment, windows into late stellar evolution, and potent cosmological yardsticks. But their utility depends on separating them unequivocally from the many nebular mimics which can strongly resemble bona fide PNe in traditional optical images and spectra. We merge new PNe from the carefully evaluated, homogeneous MASH-I and MASH-II surveys, which offer a wider evolutionary range of PNe than hitherto available, with previously known PNe classified by SIMBAD. Mid-infrared (MIR) measurements vitally complement optical data because they reveal other physical processes and morphologies via fine-structure lines, molecular bands and dust. MIR colour-colour planes, optical emission line ratios and radio fluxes show the unambiguous classification of PNe to be complex, requiring all available evidence. Statistical trends provide predictive value and we offer quantitative MIR criteria to determine whether an emission nebula is most likely to be a PN or one of the frequent contaminants such as compact HII regions or symbiotic systems. Prerequisites have been optical images and spectra but MIR morphology, colours, environment and a candidate's MIR/radio flux ratio provide a more rigorous classification. Our ultimate goal is to recognize PNe using only MIR and radio characteristics, enabling us to trawl for PNe effectively even in heavily obscured regions of the Galaxy.Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures, 10 table

Spitzer Mid-Infrared Observations of Seven Bipolar Planetary Nebulae

We have investigated the mid-infrared (MIR) and visual structures of seven bipolar planetary nebulae (BPNe), using imaging and spectroscopy acquired using the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST), and the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional in Mexico. The results show that the sources are more extended towards longer MIR wavelengths, as well as having higher levels of surface brightness in the 5.8 and 8.0 microns bands. It is also noted that the 5.8/4.5 and 8.0/4.5 microns flux ratios increase with increasing distance from the nuclei of the sources. All of these latter trends may be attributable to emission by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and/or warm dust continua within circum-nebular photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). A corresponding decrease in the flux ratios 8.0/5.8 microns may, by contrast, arise due to changes in the properties of the PAH emitting grains. We note evidence for possible 8.0 microns ring-like structures in the envelope of NGC 2346, located in a region beyond the minor axis limits of the ionized envelope. An analysis of the inner two rings shows that whilst they have higher surface brightnesses at longer MIR wavelengths, they are relatively stronger (compared to underlying emission) at 3.6 and 4.5 microns. There is also evidence for point reflection symmetry along the major axis of the outflow.Comment: 27 pages, 22 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 69 pages in arXi
