Second-order quantum nonlinear optical processes in single graphene nanostructures and arrays
Intense efforts have been made in recent years to realize nonlinear optical
interactions at the single-photon level. Much of this work has focused on
achieving strong third-order nonlinearities, such as by using single atoms or
other quantum emitters while the possibility of achieving strong second-order
nonlinearities remains unexplored. Here, we describe a novel technique to
realize such nonlinearities using graphene, exploiting the strong per-photon
fields associated with tightly confined graphene plasmons in combination with
spatially nonlocal nonlinear optical interactions. We show that in properly
designed graphene nanostructures, these conditions enable extremely strong
internal down-conversion between a single quantized plasmon and an entangled
plasmon pair, or the reverse process of second harmonic generation. A separate
issue is how such strong internal nonlinearities can be observed, given the
nominally weak coupling between these plasmon resonances and free-space
radiative fields. On one hand, by using the collective coupling to radiation of
nanostructure arrays, we show that the internal nonlinearities can manifest
themselves as efficient frequency conversion of radiative fields at extremely
low input powers. On the other hand, the development of techniques to
efficiently couple to single nanostructures would allow these nonlinear
processes to occur at the level of single input photons.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
Role of high dose octreotide LAR for the treatment of GEP-NETs
Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs) are a heterogeneous group of rare neoplasms that account for 0,5% of all malignancies. The increased incidence observed in the last few decades may be accounted for by increased awareness, improved diagnostic tools and a revision in the definition. The main primary sites are the gastro-entero-pancreatic (GEP) tract (62-67%), and the lung (22-27%). In patients with GEP-NETs, the strongest predictor of 5-years survival is the staging. An adequate clinical management of GEP-NETs should be multidisciplinary and should aim at assuring a good quality of life. Somatostatin (sst) analogues are widely used in these tumours, which often express sst receptors, since they are demonstrated to reduce clinical symptoms and tumour growth. Herein we explore the usefulness of doubling octreotide LAR dose in selected patients after escaping from symptoms control and/or tumour stabilization in course of treatment with standard dose
SUIHTER: A new mathematical model for COVID-19. Application to the analysis of the second epidemic outbreak in Italy
The COVID-19 epidemic is the last of a long list of pandemics that have
affected humankind in the last century. In this paper, we propose a novel
mathematical epidemiological model named SUIHTER from the names of the seven
compartments that it comprises: susceptible uninfected individuals (S),
undetected (both asymptomatic and symptomatic) infected (U), isolated (I),
hospitalized (H), threatened (T), extinct (E), and recovered (R). A suitable
parameter calibration that is based on the combined use of least squares method
and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is proposed with the aim of
reproducing the past history of the epidemic in Italy, surfaced in late
February and still ongoing to date, and of validating SUIHTER in terms of its
predicting capabilities. A distinctive feature of the new model is that it
allows a one-to-one calibration strategy between the model compartments and the
data that are daily made available from the Italian Civil Protection. The new
model is then applied to the analysis of the Italian epidemic with emphasis on
the second outbreak emerged in Fall 2020. In particular, we show that the
epidemiological model SUIHTER can be suitably used in a predictive manner to
perform scenario analysis at national level.Comment: 25 page
Severe Hypothyroidism Causing Pre-Eclampsia-Like Syndrome
Objective. Analyzing and managing pre-eclampsia-like syndrome due to severe hypothyroidism. Methods. Presentation of a case of severe hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's syndrome, associated with a severe early-onset preeclampsia-like syndrome, managed in our Gynecology Department. Results. Severe pre-eclampsia led to miscarriage at 24 weeks of gestational age in a 42-year-old woman, although we attempted to correct hypothyroidism with increasing doses of levothyroxine and liothyronine sodium. Conclusion. Recognizing pre-eclampsia-like syndrome caused by overt hypothyroidism from other forms of pregnancy-induced hypertension is essential for choosing the correct treatment
Pulsating Heat pipe only for Space (PHOS): Results of the REXUS 18 sounding rocket campaign
Two Closed Loop Pulsating Heat Pipes (CLPHPs) are tested on board REXUS 18 sounding rocket in order to obtain data over a relatively long microgravity period (approximately 90 s). The CLPHPs are partially filled with FC-72 and have, respectively, an inner tube diameter larger (3 mm) and slightly smaller (1.6 mm) than the critical diameter evaluated in static Earth gravity conditions. On ground, the small diameter CLPHP effectively works as a Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP): the characteristic slug and plug flow pattern forms inside the tube and the heat exchange is triggered by thermally driven self-sustained oscillations of the working fluid. On the other hand, the large diameter CLPHP works as a two- phase thermosyphon in vertical position and doesn't work in horizontal position: in this particular condition, the working fluid stratifies within the device as the surface tension force is no longer able to balance buoyancy. Then, the idea to test the CLPHPs in reduced gravity conditions: as the gravity reduces the buoyancy forces becomes less intense and it is possible to recreate the typical PHP flow pattern also for larger inner tube diameters. This allows to increase the heat transfer rate and, consequently, to decrease the overall thermal resistance. Even though it was not possible to experience low gravity conditions due to a failure in the yoyo de-spin system, the thermal response to the peculiar acceleration field (hyper-gravity) experienced on board are thoroughly described
hERG1 Channels Regulate VEGF-A Secretion in Human Gastric Cancer: Clinicopathological Correlations and Therapeutical Implications
Purpose: hERG1 channels are aberrantly expressed in several types of human cancers, where they affect different aspects of cancer cell behavior. A thorough analysis of the functional role and clinical significance of hERG1 channels in gastric cancer is still lacking. Experimental Design: hERG1 expression was tested in a wide (508 samples) Italian cohort of surgically resected patients with gastric cancer, by immunohistochemistry and real-time quantitative PCR. The functional link between hERG1 and the VEGF-A was studied in different gastric cancer cell lines. The effects of hERG1 and VEGF-A inhibition were evaluated in vivo in xenograft mouse models. Results: hERG1 was positive in69% of the patients and positivity correlated with Lauren's intestinal type, fundus localization of the tumor, G1-G2 grading, I and II tumor-node-metastasis stage, and VEGF-A expression. hERG1 activity modulated VEGF-A secretion, through an AKT-dependent regulation of the transcriptional activity of the hypoxia inducible factor. Treatment of immunodeficient mice xenografted with human gastric cancer cells, with a combination of hERG1 blockers and anti-VEGF-A antibodies, impaired tumor growth more than single-drug treatments. Conclusion: Our results show that hERG1 (i) is aberrantly expressed in human gastric cancer since its early stages; (ii) drives an intracellular pathway leading to VEGF-A secretion; (iii) can be exploited to identify a gastric cancer patients' group where a combined treatment with antiangiogenic drugs and noncardiotoxic hERG1 inhibitors could be proposed. © 2014 American Association for Cancer Research
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
Combined search for the quarks of a sequential fourth generation
Results are presented from a search for a fourth generation of quarks
produced singly or in pairs in a data set corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in
2011. A novel strategy has been developed for a combined search for quarks of
the up and down type in decay channels with at least one isolated muon or
electron. Limits on the mass of the fourth-generation quarks and the relevant
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are derived in the context of a
simple extension of the standard model with a sequential fourth generation of
fermions. The existence of mass-degenerate fourth-generation quarks with masses
below 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for minimal off-diagonal
mixing between the third- and the fourth-generation quarks. With a mass
difference of 25 GeV between the quark masses, the obtained limit on the masses
of the fourth-generation quarks shifts by about +/- 20 GeV. These results
significantly reduce the allowed parameter space for a fourth generation of

Measurement of the t t-bar production cross section in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The t t-bar production cross section (sigma[t t-bar]) is measured in
proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in data collected by the CMS
experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse
femtobarns. The measurement is performed in events with two leptons (electrons
or muons) in the final state, at least two jets identified as jets originating
from b quarks, and the presence of an imbalance in transverse momentum. The
measured value of sigma[t t-bar] for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV is 161.9 +/-
2.5 (stat.) +5.1/-5.0 (syst.) +/- 3.6(lumi.) pb, consistent with the prediction

Search for anomalous t t-bar production in the highly-boosted all-hadronic final state
A search is presented for a massive particle, generically referred to as a
Z', decaying into a t t-bar pair. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are
sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield
collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets.
The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing
suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis is based on a
data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns. Upper limits
in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and
branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for
a Randall--Sundrum Kaluza--Klein gluon. In addition, the results constrain any
enhancement in t t-bar production beyond expectations of the standard model for
t t-bar invariant masses larger than 1 TeV.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics; this version
