Are students in teacher training interested in educational-scientific contents? A longitudinal study covering the first four semesters
Lehramtsstudierende interessieren sich zu Beginn ihres Studiums hĂ€ufig stark fĂŒr pĂ€dagogische Inhalte. Ob dieses hohe Interesse allerdings im Studienverlauf stabil ist, wurde bisher unzureichend empirisch untersucht. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde an N = 1169 Lehramtsstudierenden ĂŒberprĂŒft, wie sich das Interesse an bildungswissenschaftlichen Inhalten ĂŒber vier Semester entwickelt. ZusĂ€tzlich wurden Eingangsmerkmale der Studierenden als PrĂ€diktoren zur ErklĂ€rung interindividueller Unterschiede einbezogen. Ein zentrales Ergebnis latenter Wachstumskurvenmodelle ist, dass das Interesse an den Bildungswissenschaften zwar im Mittel ĂŒber die Zeit stabil bleibt, sich aber bedeutsame Varianz im VerĂ€nderungswert zeigt. Diese kann durch die Sicherheit der Studienwahl und das angestrebte Lehramt erklĂ€rt werden, und zwar in die Richtung, dass Studierende mit hoher Entscheidungssicherheit sowie Studierende eines gymnasialen Lehramts tendenziell an Interesse dazugewinnen. However, whether this strong interest remains stable throughout the course of studies has as yet hardly been examined empirically. On the basis of a sample of N = 1169 students enrolled in teacher training, the present study investigates how the interest in educational-scientific contents develops over a period of four semesters. In addition, enrollment characteristics of students are included as predictors for the explanation of inter-individual differences. A key result of latent growth curve models is that, on average, the interest in educational sciences remains stable over time, however, significant variance is revealed in the change value. This can be explained by the certainty of the choice of studies and the type of teaching post aimed at, namely, it can be shown that students who are to a high degree sure that they made the right choice and students choosing an academic track program tend to build up interest. Data integration and analysis for circadian medicine
Data integration, data sharing, and standardized analyses are important enablers for data-driven medical research. Circadian medicine is an emerging field with a particularly high need for coordinated and systematic collaboration between researchers from different disciplines. Datasets in circadian medicine are multimodal, ranging from molecular circadian profiles and clinical parameters to physiological measurements and data obtained from (wearable) sensors or reported by patients. Uniquely, data spanning both the time dimension and the spatial dimension (across tissues) are needed to obtain a holistic view of the circadian system. The study of human rhythms in the context of circadian medicine has to confront the heterogeneity of clock properties within and across subjects and our inability to repeatedly obtain relevant biosamples from one subject. This requires informatics solutions for integrating and visualizing relevant data types at various temporal resolutions ranging from milliseconds and seconds to minutes and several hours. Associated challenges range from a lack of standards that can be used to represent all required data in a common interoperable form, to challenges related to data storage, to the need to perform transformations for integrated visualizations, and to privacy issues. The downstream analysis of circadian rhythms requires specialized approaches for the identification, characterization, and discrimination of rhythms. We conclude that circadian medicine research provides an ideal environment for developing innovative methods to address challenges related to the collection, integration, visualization, and analysis of multimodal multidimensional biomedical data.Peer Reviewe
Multifunctional, Self-Cleaning Air Filters Based on Graphene-Enhanced Ceramic Networks
Particulate air pollution is taking a huge toll on modern society, being
associated with more than three million deaths per year. In addition, airborne
infectious microorganism can spread dangerous diseases, further elevating the
problem. A common way to mitigate the risks of airborne particles is by air
filtration. However, conventional air filters usually do not provide any
functionality beyond particle removal. They are unable to inactivate
accumulated contaminants and therefore need periodic maintenance and
replacement to remain operational and safe. This work presents a
multifunctional, self-cleaning air filtration system which utilizes a novel
graphene-enhanced air filter medium (GeFM). The hybrid network of the GeFM
combines the passive structure-based air filtration properties of an underlying
ceramic network with additional active features based on the functional
properties of a graphene thin film. The GeFM is able to capture >95 % of
microorganisms and particles larger than 1 m and can be repetitively
Joule-heated to >300 {\deg}C for several hours without signs of degradation.
Hereby, built-up organic particulate matter and microbial contaminants are
effectively decomposed, regenerating the GeFM. Additionally, the GeFM provides
unique options to monitor the filter's air troughput and loading status during
operation. The active features of the GeFM can drastically improve filter
life-time and safety, offering great potential for the development of safer and
more sustainable air filtration solutions to face the future challenges of air

Measures and time points relevant for post-surgical follow-up in patients with inflammatory arthritis: a pilot study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Rheumatic diseases commonly affect joints and other structures in the hand. Surgery is a traditional way to treat hand problems in inflammatory rheumatic diseases with the purposes of pain relief, restore function and prevent progression. There are numerous measures to choose from, and a combination of outcome measures is recommended. This study evaluated if instruments commonly used in rheumatologic clinical practice are suitable to measure outcome of hand surgery and to identify time points relevant for follow-up.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Thirty-one patients (median age 56 years, median disease duration 15 years) with inflammatory rheumatic disease and need for post-surgical occupational therapy intervention formed this pilot study group.</p> <p>Hand function was assessed regarding grip strength (Grippit), pain (VAS), range of motion (ROM) (Signals of Functional Impairment (SOFI)) and grip ability (Grip Ability Test (GAT)). Activities of daily life (ADL) were assessed by means of Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Outcome (DASH) and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). The instruments were evaluated by responsiveness and feasibility; follow-up points were 0, 3, 6 and 12 months.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All instruments showed significant change at one or more follow-up points. Satisfaction with activities (COPM) showed the best responsiveness (SMR>0.8), while ROM measured with SOFI had low responsiveness at most follow-up time points. The responsiveness of the instruments was stable between 6 and 12 month follow-up which imply that 6 month is an appropriate time for evaluating short-term effect of hand surgery in rheumatic diseases.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We suggest a core set of instruments measuring pain, grip strength, grip ability, perceived symptoms and self-defined daily activities. This study has shown that VAS pain, the Grippit instrument, GAT, DASH symptom scale and COPM are suitable outcome instruments for hand surgery, while SOFI may be a more insensitive test. However, the feasibility of this protocol in clinical practice awaits prospective studies.</p

Climate change and possible challenges for crop protection â Yesterday, today, tomorrow
Das Klima und die Witterung sind prĂ€gende Faktoren fĂŒr den Pflanzenschutz. Bereits vor 100 Jahren haben sich Wissenschaftler im Nachrichtenblatt fĂŒr den Deutschen Pflanzenschutzdienst dieser Thematik gewidmet. Die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels sind ambivalent und es wird insgesamt zu einer VerĂ€nderung des Schaderregerspektrums kommen. Tendenziell werden SchĂ€den durch Insekten, Krankheitserreger und wĂ€rmetolerante UnkrĂ€uÂter begĂŒnstigt. Das Risiko der Etablierung invasiver Arten nimmt zu. Ebenso kann die Wirksamkeit des biologischen Pflanzenschutzes beeintrĂ€chtigt und neue Verfahren erforderlich werden. Beim chemischen Pflanzenschutz wird sich das Wirkstoffspektrum verschieben und die Anforderungen an Applikationstechnik und -termin steigen. Starkregen kann das Risiko des Austrags von Pflanzenschutzmitteln in die Umwelt steigern. Auch in Mitteleuropa kann es verstĂ€rkt zu Befall mit VorratsschĂ€dlingen bereits im Feld kommen und die QualitĂ€t und LagerstabilitĂ€t der Ernteprodukte abnehmen. InsÂgesamt wird die Bedeutung prĂ€ventiver PflanzenschutzmaĂnahmen zunehmen. Die Folgen des Klimawandels erhöhen die betriebs- und volkswirtschaftlichen Risiken und stellen alle Akteursebenen vor erhebliche HerausÂforderungen.Climate and weather are decisive factors for plant protection. Already 100 years ago, scientists dedicated themselves to this topic in the newsletter of the German Plant Protection Service. The effects of climate change are ambiÂvalent and there will be an overall change in the pest spectrum. Damage caused by insects, pathogens and heat-tolerant weeds will tend to be favoured. The risk of invasive species becoming established increases. SimiÂlarly, the effectiveness of biological crop protection may be compromised and new methods may be required. In the case of chemical pesticides, the spectrum of active substances will shift and the demands on application technology and timing will increase. Heavy rains can increase the risk of pesticide run-off into the environment. There may be increased infestation with storage pests already in the field in Central Europe too, and the quality and storage stability of harvested products may decline. Overall, the importance of preventive plant protection measures will increase. The consequences of climate change increase operational and economic risks and pose considerable challenges for all levels of stakeholders

EURECâŽA
The science guiding the EURECâŽA campaign and its measurements is presented. EURECâŽA comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic â eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EURECâŽA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200âkm) and larger (500âkm) scales, roughly 400âh of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10â000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the airâsea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EURECâŽA explored â from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation â are presented along with an overview of EURECâŽA's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice.
