    SEARCHING FOR RATCHET EFFECTS IN AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTS

    In a dynamic contracting environment, increasing standards over time in light of past performance is known as the ratchet effect. Despite the recent theoretical attention given to the ratchet effect, models that include these effects have not been empirically tested against contract data. In this study, we use farm-level data on modern Great Plains agricultural cash rent and cropshare contracts to test for the presence of ratchet effects in the context of a principal-agent model with moral hazard. We find limited evidence for the ratchet effect within share contracts, and no evidence that it is important for the choice of contract between cash rent and cropshare.Agribusiness,

    A Study of the Mathematical Disabilities of Students Pursuing First Year College Physics

    This study is in progress at the present time and hence the report is concerned only with such aspects as have been completed. The Compass Survey Test in Arithmetic (Advanced Examination) and the Douglass Diagnostic Test in Elementary Algebra were given to 282 students pursuing freshman physics in five colleges. The disabilities indicated by these tests were classified and tabulated. In addition to the above, the daily, weekly, and other tests given by the instructors in these colleges to the students concerned were obtained and the disabilities indicated thereon were classified and tabulated. Each student also solved a selected list of physics problems. This list was so selected that a student solving all the problems would have to use a high percentage of all the mathematical skills required by a course in freshman physics as determined by previous studies

    Demonstration of detuned dual recycling at the Garching 30m laser interferometer

    Dual recycling is an advanced optical technique to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors in a limited bandwidth. To optimise the center of this band with respect to Fourier frequencies of expected gravitational wave signals detuned dual recycling has to be implemented. We demonstrated detuned dual recycling on a fully suspended 30m prototype interferometer. A control scheme that allows to tune the detector to different frequencies will be outlined. Good agreement between the experimental results and numerical simulations has been achieved.Comment: 9 page

    Separate processing of texture and form in the ventral stream : evidence from fMRI and visual agnosia.

    Real-life visual object recognition requires the processing of more than just geometric (shape, size, and orientation) properties. Surface properties such as color and texture are equally important, particularly for providing information about the material properties of objects. Recent neuroimaging research suggests that geometric and surface properties are dealt with separately, within the lateral occipital cortex (LOC) and the collateral sulcus (CoS), respectively. Here we compared objects that either differed in aspect ratio or in surface texture only, keeping all other visual properties constant. Results on brain-intact participants confirmed that surface texture activates an area in the posterior CoS, quite distinct from the area activated by shape within LOC. We also tested two patients with visual object agnosia, one of whom (DF) performed well on the texture task but at chance on the shape task, while the other (MS) showed the converse pattern. This behavioral double dissociation was matched by a parallel neuroimaging dissociation, with activation in CoS but not LOC in patient DF, and activation in LOC but not CoS in patient MS. These data provide presumptive evidence that the areas respectively activated by shape and texture play a causally necessary role in the perceptual discrimination of these features

    Persistent, depth-intensified mixing during the Western Mediterranean Transition's initial stages

Major deep-convection activity in the northwestern Mediterranean during winter 2005 triggered the formation of a complex anomalous deep-water structure that substantially modified the properties of the Western Mediterranean deep layers. Since then, evolution of this thermohaline structure, the so-called Western Mediterranean Transition (WMT), has been traced through a regularly sampled hydrographic deep station located on the outer continental slope of Minorca Island. A rapid erosion of the WMT's near-bottom thermohaline signal was observed during 2005–2007. The plausible interpretation of this as local bottom-intensified mixing motivates this study. Here, the evolution of the WMT structure through 2005–2007 is reproduced by means of a one-dimensional diffusion model including double-diffusive mixing that allows vertical variation of the background mixing coefficient and includes a source term to represent the lateral advection of deep-water injections from the convection area. Using an optimization algorithm, a best guess for the depth-dependent background mixing coefficient is obtained for the study period. WMT evolution during its initial stages is satisfactorily reproduced using this simple conceptual model, indicating that strong depth-intensified mixing (K ∞ (z) ≈ 22 × 10−4 m2 s−1; z ⪆ 1,400 dbar) is a valid explanation for the observations. Extensive hydrographic and current observations gathered over the continental slope of Minorca during winter 2018, the first deep-convective winter intensively sampled in the region, provide evidence of topographically localized enhanced mixing concurrent with newly formed dense waters flowing along-slope toward the Algerian sub-basin. This transport-related boundary mixing mechanism is suggested to be a plausible source of the water-mass transformations observed during the initial stages of the WMT off Minorca.CTM2014-54374-R.     The Belle II SVD detector

    The Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) is one of the main detectors in the Belle II experiment at KEK, Japan. In combination with a pixel detector, the SVD determines precise decay vertex and low-momentum track reconstruction. The SVD ladders are being developed at several institutes. For the development of the tracking algorithm as well as the performance estimation of the ladders, beam tests for the ladders were performed. We report an overview of the SVD development, its performance measured in the beam test, and the prospect of its assembly and commissioning until installation

    Measurement of ISR-FSR interference in the processes e+ e- --> mu+ mu- gamma and e+ e- --> pi+ pi- gamma

    Charge asymmetry in processes e+ e- --> mu+ mu- gamma and e+ e- --> pi+ pi- gamma is measured using 232 fb-1 of data collected with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies near 10.58 GeV. An observable is introduced and shown to be very robust against detector asymmetries while keeping a large sensitivity to the physical charge asymmetry that results from the interference between initial and final state radiation. The asymmetry is determined as afunction of the invariant mass of the final-state tracks from production threshold to a few GeV/c2. It is compared to the expectation from QED for e+ e- --> mu+ mu- gamma and from theoretical models for e+ e- --> pi+ pi- gamma. A clear interference pattern is observed in e+ e- --> pi+ pi- gamma, particularly in the vicinity of the f_2(1270) resonance. The inferred rate of lowest order FSR production is consistent with the QED expectation for e+ e- --> mu+ mu- gamma, and is negligibly small for e+ e- --> pi+ pi- gamma.Comment: 32 pages,29 figures, to be submitted to Phys.     Measurement of CP Asymmetries and Branching Fractions in Charmless Two-Body B-Meson Decays to Pions and Kaons

    We present improved measurements of CP-violation parameters in the decays B0π+πB^0 \to \pi^+ \pi^-, B0K+πB^0 \to K^+ \pi^-, and B0π0π0B^0 \to \pi^0 \pi^0, and of the branching fractions for B0π0π0B^0 \to \pi^0 \pi^0 and B0K0π0B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0. The results are obtained with the full data set collected at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy BB factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, corresponding to 467±5467 \pm 5 million BBˉB\bar B pairs. We find the CP-violation parameter values and branching fractions Sπ+π=0.68±0.10±0.03,Cπ+π=0.25±0.08±0.02,AKπ+=0.107±0.0160.004+0.006,Cπ0π0=0.43±0.26±0.05,Br(B0π0π0)=(1.83±0.21±0.13)×106,Br(B0K0π0)=(10.1±0.6±0.4)×106, S_{\pi^+\pi^-} = -0.68 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.03, C_{\pi^+\pi^-} = -0.25 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.02, A_{K^-\pi^+} = -0.107 \pm 0.016 ^{+0.006}_{-0.004}, C_{\pi^0\pi^0} = -0.43 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.05, Br(B^0 \to \pi^0 \pi^0) = (1.83 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-6}, Br(B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0) = (10.1 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-6}, where in each case, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe CP violation with a significance of 6.7 standard deviations for B0π+πB^0 \to\pi^+\pi^- and 6.1 standard deviations for B0K+πB^0 \to K^+ \pi^-, including systematic uncertainties. Constraints on the Unitarity Triangle angle α\alpha are determined from the isospin relations among the BππB \to \pi\pi rates and asymmetries. Considering only the solution preferred by the Standard Model, we find α\alpha to be in the range [71,109][71^\circ,109^\circ] at the 68% confidence level.Comment: 18 pages, 11 postscript figures, submitted to Phys.
