    Food By-Product Valorization by Using Plant-Based Coagulants Combined with AOPs for Agro-Industrial Wastewater Treatment

    Re-using and adding value to by-products is one of the current focuses of the agri-food industry, following the Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations. In this work, the byproducts of four plants, namely chestnut burr, acorn peel, olive leaf, and grape stem were used as coagulants to treat elderberry wastewater (EW), a problematic liquid effluent. EW pre-treatment using these natural coagulants showed promising results after pH and coagulant dosage optimization. However, the decrease in total organic carbon (TOC) was not significant, due to the addition of the plant-based natural coagulants which contain carbon content. After this pre-treatment, the photo-Fenton advanced oxidation process was selected, after preliminary assays, to improve the global performance of the EW treatment. Photo-Fenton was also optimized for the parameters of pH, H2O2, Fe2+, and irradiance power, and the best conditions were applied to the EW treatment. Under the best operational conditions defined in the parametric study, the combined results of coagulation–flocculation–decantation (CFD) and photo-Fenton for chestnut burr, acorn peel, olive leaf, and grape stem were, respectively, 90.2, 89.5, 91.5, and 88.7% for TOC removal; 88.7, 82.0, 90.2 and 93.1%, respectively, for turbidity removal; and finally, 40.6, 42.2, 45.3, and 39.1%, respectively, for TSS removal.     Reevaluation of the role of nuclear uncertainties in experiments on atomic parity violation with isotopic chains

    In light of new data on neutron distributions from experiments with antiprotonic atoms [ Trzcinska {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 082501 (2001)], we reexamine the role of nuclear-structure uncertainties in the interpretation of measurements of parity violation in atoms using chains of isotopes of the same element. With these new nuclear data, we find an improvement in the sensitivity of isotopic chain measurements to ``new physics'' beyond the standard model. We compare possible constraints on ``new physics'' with the most accurate to date single-isotope probe of parity violation in the Cs atom. We conclude that presently isotopic chain experiments employing atoms with nuclear charges Z < 50 may result in more accurate tests of the weak interaction.Comment: 6 pages, 1 fig., submitted to Phys.     Effective genome editing in Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis stably expressing Cas9 and T7 RNA polymerase

    Until 2015, loss-of-function studies to elucidate protein function in Leishmania relied on gene disruption through homologous recombination. Then, the CRISPR/Cas9 revolution reached these protozoan parasites allowing efficient genome editing with one round of transfection. In addition, the development of LeishGEdit, a PCR-based toolkit for generating knockouts and tagged lines using CRISPR/Cas9, allowed a more straightforward and effective genome editing. In this system, the plasmid pTB007 is delivered to Leishmania for episomal expression or integration in the ÎČ-tubulin locus and for the stable expression of T7 RNA polymerase and Cas9. In South America, and especially in Brazil, Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is the most frequent etiological agent of tegumentary leishmaniasis. The L. braziliensis ÎČ-tubulin locus presents significant sequence divergence in comparison with Leishmania major, which precludes the efficient integration of pTB007 and the stable expression of Cas9. To overcome this limitation, the L. major ÎČ-tubulin sequences, present in the pTB007, were replaced by a Leishmania (Viannia) ÎČ-tubulin conserved sequence generating the pTB007_Viannia plasmid. This modification allowed the successful integration of the pTB007_Viannia cassette in the L. braziliensis M2903 genome, and in silico predictions suggest that this can also be achieved in other Viannia species. The activity of Cas9 was evaluated by knocking out the flagellar protein PF16, which caused a phenotype of immobility in these transfectants. Endogenous PF16 was also successfully tagged with mNeonGreen, and an in-locus complementation strategy was employed to return a C-terminally tagged copy of the PF16 gene to the original locus, which resulted in the recovery of swimming capacity. The modified plasmid pTB007_Viannia allowed the integration and stable expression of both T7 RNA polymerase and Cas9 in L. braziliensis and provided an important tool for the study of the biology of this parasite

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio
