    CFD Analysis of Bed Textural Characteristics on TBR Behavior: Kinetics, Scaling-up, Multiscale Analysis and Wall Effects

    A simulation of a trickle bed reactor aided by computational fluid dynamics was implemented. With a Eulerian approach, geometrical characteristics were explicitly considered and two simultaneous heterogeneous reactions were included, hydrodesulphurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN). This was performed in order to achieve the following: (1) attain further insight into a proper scaling‐up procedure to be able to obtain the same hydrodynamics and kinetics behavior in two reactors of different length and diameter scales; (2) develop a multiscale analysis regarding the communication of information between scales through the construction of a porous microstructure model from which the geometrical information of the microscale is captured by the effective transport coefficients (which affect the overall reactor behavior); (3) investigate the effect of operation conditions variations on hydrodynamics and kinetics; (4) and assess the deviations and further differences observed from average to punctual conversion values and the assumptions from kinetic literature models through a preliminary multiscale analysis. The CFD results were validated against experimental pressure drops data as well as HDS and HDN conversions theoretical data. An excellent agreement was found. The model produces a significant improvement in hydrodynamic parameters prediction, achieving 5 times better accuracy in predicting pressure drops and 50% improvement in holdup prediction. The fully coupled model predicts HDS conversion with 96% accuracy and HDN conversion with 94% accuracy. Results suggest that the best way to obtain similar kinetic and hydrodynamic behavior in TBRs with different length and diameter length scales is by equaling the liquid holdup (εγ) or the mass velocities (L‐G)

    These materials from the 9th Annual Black Literary Suite, Black Writing in Reel Time, include the video of the panel discussion from the Black Literary Suite exhibit. This record also contains supplementary materials about the discussion, the panelists, and a timeline.Countless works by Black authors have found multiple lives through film adaptations, recontextualizing the ways in which modern audiences can engage with these narratives. From Charles Chesnutt’s novel The House Behind the Cedars, and the 1927 film directed by Oscar Micheaux, to Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give and the 2017 film directed by George Tillman Jr., adaptations have brought renewed attention to works by Black authors expanding the discussion of a range of topics, including race, identity, coming of age, class conflict, and Black love. Black film, like Black writing, gives us history, past and present, real and reimagined. In order to highlight works within the Project on the History of Black Writing’s collection and demonstrate the impact these adaptations have had on the reception, circulation, and growing popularity of Black literature, this year’s Black Literary Suite (BLS) has selected the theme: “Black Writing in Reel Time.” The timeline, interactive map, and selected filmography highlight works that range from the Antebellum period, such as Solomon Northup’s autobiography Twelve Years a Slave, to the 21st century, where novels like The Hate U Give offer meaningful reflections that educate, challenge, and -yes- entertain us

    Estimation of effective diffusion coefficient and its effect on effectiveness factor for hds catalytic process: a multi-scale approach

    Effectiveness factors have great relevance in multiphase reactors modeling since they are the conventional way of incorporating the effects of intra-particle resistance reaction rate. This work determines the description level effect of catalytic pellet microstructure on mass and energy effective transport coefficients prediction, isothermal and no isothermal. For such a purpose some results about on evaluation of the effective diffusivity and conductivity with the methodology of volume averaging were applied. The obtained results along with a Langmuir–Hinshelwood/Hougen–Watson kinetic expression were applied to establish the concentration and temperature fields in a catalytic particle. The evaluation of concentration field and effectiveness factors were developed using two different models: pseudohomogeneous mass and energy transport model for a catalytic particle with reaction in all domain, and heterogeneous mass and energy transport model with fluid-catalytic surface interphase reaction for a realistic porous structure model. The results show the differences in concentration and temperature profiles between both models and consequently in effectiveness factors. This could be ascribed to the form of evaluation of effective transport coefficients used in the pseudo-homogeneous model, and presumably to the simple shape of the unit cells used for the solution of the closure problem for the average transport equations with homogeneous reaction

    The impact of corporate social responsibility strategy on the management and governance axis for sustainable growth

    The aim of this work is to show whether a continuous strategy in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) over time brings efficiency and profitability to the company’s operations. The methodology used in this paper is based on two sets of variables: the scoring for 27 listed companies present in the Spanish MERCO Corporate Responsibility and Governance Ranking (MERCO CR&G Ranking), and their share price in the Spanish open stock market for said companies from 2011 to 2019. These variables are compared with regressive, autoregressive and moving average econometrical methods over time. Results reveal that: (i) there is a directly proportional relationship between CSR, measured by the MERCO CR&G Ranking, and the share price; (ii) such relationship loses relevance when considering the economic context; (iii) the great progress of CSR in terms of management, transparency, measurement, environment and governance translates into a crucial contribution to the efficiency and sustainable growth of the company

    Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm with a Bio-Inspired Aging Model

    A Particle Swarm Optimization with a Bio-inspired Aging Model (BAM-PSO) algorithm is proposed to alleviate the premature convergence problem of other PSO algorithms. Each particle within the swarm is subjected to aging based on the age-related changes observed in immune system cells. The proposed algorithm is tested with several popular and well-established benchmark functions and its performance is compared to other evolutionary algorithms in both low and high dimensional scenarios. Simulation results reveal that at the cost of computational time, the proposed algorithm has the potential to solve the premature convergence problem that affects PSO-based algorithms; showing good results for both low and high dimensional problems. This work suggests that aging mechanisms do have further implications in computational intelligence

    In vitro gas production of foliage from three browse tree species treated with different dose levels of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different dose levels of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (EFE) on in vitro ruminal fermentation kinetics and energy utilization of foliages from three browse trees (Pithecellobium dulce, Heliocarpus velutinus and Guazuma ulmifolia). Mixture of EFE product was added to the leaves of the three browse tree species at three dose levels: 0 (control), 3.5 and 7.0 mg/g of DM. Chemical composition of the foliages, including plant secondary metabolites such as total phenolics (TP), saponins (SAP) and aqueous fraction (AF), was determined. In addition, in vitro assaying of ruminal gas production kinetics was determined for the three browse three foliages treated with EFE. P. dulce had the highest crude protein content (p < 0.05), whereas G. ulmifolia had the highest content of neutral detergent fibre and SAP (p < 0.05) and H. velutinus had the lowest content of TP (p < 0.05). The interaction between tree species and dose level of EFE was significant (p < 0.05) for gas production (GP) at 24 h of incubation, parameters b and c of the accumulated GP curve, short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and metabolizable energy (ME). The lowest (p < 0.01) extent of accumulated GP as well as the b and c values occurred in G. ulmifolia at 0 mg EFE/g DM. P. dulce had the highest (p < 0.05) values for ME and SCFA at the highest dose of EFE. Tree species and dose level had significant (p < 0.05) effects on all parameters describing in vitro ruminal fermentation kinetics and energy utilization. Addition of EFE improved the fermentation kinetics of the browse species considered in this study.UAE

El modelo se desarrolló bajo 6 etapas: la modificación de su funcionamiento mecánico; el desarrollo electrónico y acondicionamiento eléctrico; el diseño de la programación necesaria para el funcionamiento y configuración; el establecimiento de un sistema de comunicación bidireccional a través de WiFi; el desarrollo de una página web, y todo lo requerido para su construcción física. Para el prototipo se procuró el uso de software y hardware libres. El proyecto busca generar un aporte al desarrollo en la domótica y el Internet de las cosas.This paper presents a prototype of smart valve oriented to use in domestic spaces. The model was developed under 5 stages: the modification of its mechanical functioning; the electronic development and electrical conditioning; the design of the programming necessary for the operation and configuration; the establishment of a bidirectional communication system through WiFi, and the development of a web page. For the prototype, the use of free software and hardware was sought. The project seeks to generate a contribution to development in the home automation and Internet of things

    A survey on author profiling, deception, and irony detection for the Arabic language

    The treatment of a pregnant HIV positive patient with cryptococcal meningitis in Malawi. Case report and review of treatment options

    This case reports cryptococcal meningitis in an HIV positive woman on antiretroviral therapy, presenting with left middle cerebral artery stroke at 30 weeks gestation. The patient had well-controlled HIV (CD4 count over 200 cells/mL). The immunosuppressive effects of the pregnancy likely contributed to the development of cryptococcal disease. The patient was successfully treated with two weeks of amphotericin B followed by fluconazole, delivered a healthy baby, but remained with a permanent severe neurological deficit
