Phenomenology of Non-Abelian Flat Directions in a Minimal Superstring Standard Model
Recently, we presented the first non-Abelian flat directions that produce
from a heterotic string model solely the three-generation MSSM states as the
massless spectrum in the observable sector of the low energy effective field
theory. In this paper we continue to develop the systematic techniques for the
analysis of nonrenormalizable superpotential terms and non-Abelian flat
direction in realistic string models. Some of our non-Abelian directions were
F-flat to all finite orders in the superpotential. We study for the same string
model the varying phenomenologies resulting from a large set of such all-order
flat directions. We focus on the quark, charged lepton, and Higgs doublet mass
matrices resulting for our phenomenologically superior non-Abelian flat
direction. We review and apply a string-related method for generating large
mass hierarchies between MSSM generations, first discussed in string-derived
flipped SU(5) models, when all generational mass terms are of renormalizable or
very low non-renormalizable order
Size and frequency of natural forest disturbances and Amazon carbon balance
Forest inventory studies in the Amazon indicate a large terrestrial carbon sink. However, field plots may fail to represent forest mortality processes at landscape-scales of tropical forests. Here we characterize the frequency distribution of disturbance events in natural forests from 0.01 ha to 2,651 ha size throughout Amazonia using a novel combination of forest inventory, airborne lidar and satellite remote sensing data. We find that small-scale mortality events are responsible for aboveground biomass losses of B1.28 Pg C y 1 over the entire Amazon region. We also find that intermediate-scale disturbances account for losses of B0.01 Pg C y 1 , and that the largest-scale disturbances as a result of blow-downs only account for losses of B0.003 Pg C y 1 . Simulation of growth and mortality indicates that even when all carbon losses from intermediate and large-scale disturbances are considered, these are outweighed by the net biomass accumulation by tree growth, supporting the inference of an Amazon carbon sink
Defining the origins of multiple emission/excitation in rhenium-bisthiazole complexes
The underlying mechanism of the unusual emissive behavior of [Re(CO) 3 -1,1-bis-4-thiazole-(1,4)-diaminobutane)] bromide (4-BT) has been investigated. Synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of structurally similar isomers ([Re(CO) 3 -1,1-bis-2-thiazole-(1,4)-diaminobutane)] bromide (2-BT)) and the location of triplet states, solid state and low temperature spectroscopic measurements, and DFT calculations show that the photophysical properties are not due to photoisomerization as previously hypothesized. The results show that the unusual emissive behavior is not observed in structural isomers, is specific to the previously reported complex, 4-BT, and may arise from vibrational energy relaxation and vibrational cooling. Translation of the unusual emissive behavior to the solid state offers an interesting platform allowing this complex to be potentially utilized as a probe, sensor or photonic device
A K-theory Anomaly Free Supersymmetric Flipped SU(5) Model from Intersecting Branes
We construct an N=1 supersymmetric three-family flipped SU(5) model from type
IIA orientifolds on with D6-branes intersecting at
general angles. The model is constrained by the requirement that Ramond-Ramond
tadpoles cancel, the supersymmetry conditions, and that the gauge boson coupled
to the factor does not get a string-scale mass via a generalised
Green-Schwarz mechanism. The model is further constrained by requiring
cancellation of K-theory charges. The spectrum contains a complete grand
unified and electroweak Higgs sector, however the latter in a non-minimal
number of copies. In addition, it contains extra matter both in bi-fundamental
and vector-like representations as well as two copies of matter in the
symmetric representation of SU(5).Comment: 17 Pages, LaTe
Geomorphological significance of Ontario Lacus on Titan: Integrated interpretation of Cassini VIMS, ISS and RADAR data and comparison with the Etosha Pan (Namibia)
International audienceOntario Lacus is the largest lake of the whole southern hemisphere of Titan, Saturn's major moon. It has been imaged twice by each of the Cassini imaging systems (Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) in 2004 and 2005, Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) in 2007 and 2009 and Radar in 2009 and 2010). In this study, we take advantage of each imaging dataset to establish a global survey of Ontario Lacus' environment from 2005 to 2010. We perform a geomorphological mapping and interpretation of Ontario Lacus, mainly based on a joint analysis of VIMS and Radar SAR datasets, along with the T49 altimetric profile acquired in December 2008. The morphologies observed on Ontario Lacus are compared to landforms of a semi-arid terrestrial analog, which closely resembles Titan's lakes: the pans of the Etosha Basin, located in Namibia. From this comparison, we infer that Ontario Lacus is an extremely flat depression where liquids, only located in the darkest areas in the Radar data, cover topographic lows where the "alkanofer" would raise above the depression floor. The rest of the depression appears rather as a muddy flat surface likely composed of a thick coating of photon-absorbing materials, explaining its still rather dark appearance in the infrared and radar data. We also determined whether surface changes occurred during the 5 years time interval between 2005 and 2010. We found that the depression contour is constant at the resolution of ISS and VIMS data, both being consistent with the depression contour derived from the Radar data. Our interpretation, in which the liquids are located only in some parts of Ontario Lacus, agrees with the lack of significant change of the depression contour between 2007 (and 2005 with more uncertainties) and 2010
Diffusion in Stationary Flow from Mesoscopic Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics
We analyze the diffusion of a Brownian particle in a fluid under stationary
flow. By using the scheme of non-equilibrium thermodynamics in phase space, we
obtain the Fokker-Planck equation which is compared with others derived from
kinetic theory and projector operator techniques. That equation exhibits
violation of the fluctuation dissipation-theorem. By implementing the
hydrodynamic regime described by the first moments of the non-equilibrium
distribution, we find relaxation equations for the diffusion current and
pressure tensor, allowing us to arrive at a complete description of the system
in the inertial and diffusion regimes. The simplicity and generality of the
method we propose, makes it applicable to more complex situations, often
encountered in problems of soft condensed matter, in which not only one but
more degrees of freedom are coupled to a non-equilibrium bath.Comment: 10 pages, accepted in Phys. Rev.

Non-Minimal Warm Inflation and Perturbations on the Warped DGP Brane with Modified Induced Gravity
We construct a warm inflation model with inflaton field non-minimally coupled
to induced gravity on a warped DGP brane. We incorporate possible modification
of the induced gravity on the brane in the spirit of -gravity. We study
cosmological perturbations in this setup. In the case of two field inflation
such as warm inflation, usually entropy perturbations are generated. While it
is expected that in the case of one field inflation these perturbations to be
removed, we show that even in the absence of the radiation field, entropy
perturbations are generated in our setup due to non-minimal coupling and
modification of the induced gravity.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures, Accepted by Gen. Rel Gravi
Search for and Using Genetic Programming Event Selection
We apply a genetic programming technique to search for the double Cabibbo
suppressed decays and .
We normalize these decays to their Cabibbo favored partners and find
\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^+ \pi^-\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^-
\pi^+ and D_s^+ \to K^+ K^+
\pi^-D_s^+ \to K^+ K^- \pi^+ where
the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Expressed as
90% confidence levels (CL), we find and respectively.
This is the first successful use of genetic programming in a high energy
physics data analysis.Comment: 10 page
