    Wrapped fluxbranes

We consider the construction of fluxbranes in certain curved geometries, generalizing the familiar construction of the Melvin fluxtube as a quotient of flat space. The resulting configurations correspond to fluxbranes wrapped on cycles in curved spaces. The non-trivial transverse geometry leads in some instances to solutions with asymptotically constant dilaton profiles. We describe explicitly several supersymmetric solutions of this kind. The solutions inherit some properties from their flat space cousins, like flux periodicity. Interestingly type IIA/0A fluxbrane duality holds near the core of these fluxbranes, but does not persist in the asymptotic region, precisely where it would contradict perturbative inequivalence of IIA/0A theories.Comment: 22 pages, latex, no figures. Comments on Non-Supersymmetric Orientifolds at Strong Coupling

We consider several properties of a set of anti-Dpp-branes in the presence of orientifold pp-planes in type II theory. This system breaks all the supersymmetries of the theory, but is free of tachyons. In particular, we center on the case of a single anti-Dpp-brane stuck at a negatively charged orientifold pp-plane, and study its strong coupling behaviour for p=2,3,4p=2,3,4. Interestingly enough, as the coupling increases the system undergoes a phase transition where an additional antibrane is created. We conclude with some remarks on the limit of large number of antibranes on top of orientifold planes.Comment: 14 pages, Latex. Brane Configurations for Branes at Conifolds

We study the T duality between a set of type IIB D3 branes atnon-orbifold threefold singularities, and type IIA configurations of D4 branes stretched between relatively rotated NS fivebranes. The four-dimensional N=1 field theories on the D3 brane world-volume can be easily described using the IIA brane configuration. These models include families of chiral theories continuously connected to the theories appearing in brane box models (or D3 branes at orbifold singularities). We propose that phase transitions in the K\"ahler moduli space of the singularity are related to the crossing of rotated NS fivebranes in the T dual picture, and thus to Seiberg's duality in one of the gauge factors. We also comment on the inclusion of orientifold planes in the IIA brane picture.Comment: 34 pages, Latex, 7 eps figures. M-theory interpretation of the real topological string

We describe the type IIA physical realization of the unoriented topological string introduced by Walcher, describe its M-theory lift, and show that it allows to compute the open and unoriented topological amplitude in terms of one-loop diagram of BPS M2-brane states. This confirms and allows to generalize the conjectured BPS integer expansion of the topological amplitude. The M-theory lift of the orientifold is freely acting on the M-theory circle, so that integer multiplicities are a weighted version of the (equivariant subsector of the) original closed oriented Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. The M-theory lift also provides new perspective on the topological tadpole cancellation conditions. We finally comment on the M-theory version of other unoriented topological strings, and clarify certain misidentifications in earlier discussions in the literature.Comment: pdflatex, 29 pages, 1 figure; v2: minor changes (ref 29 added, appendix A title corrected

Orientifolds of Warped Throats from Toric Calabi-Yau Singularities

We study the complex deformations of orientifolds of D3-branes at toric CY singularities, using their description in terms of dimer diagrams. We describe orientifold quotients that have fixed lines or fixed points in the dimer, and characterize the possibilities to deform them in terms of the behaviour of zig-zag paths under the orientifold symmetry. The resulting models are holographic duals to warped throats with orientifold planes. Our systematic construction provides a general class of configurations which includes models recently appeared in the context of de Sitter uplift by nilpotent goldstino or dynamical supersymmetry breaking.Comment: 39 pages, 23 figures. v2: minor corrections don

De Sitter Uplift with Dynamical Susy Breaking

We propose the use of D-brane realizations of Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking (DSB) gauge sectors as sources of uplift in compactifications with moduli stabilization onto de Sitter vacua. This construction is fairly different from the introduction of anti D-branes, yet allows for tunably small contributions to the vacuum energy via their embedding into warped throats. The idea is explicitly exemplified by the embedding of the 1-family SU(5)SU(5) DSB model in a local warped throat with fluxes, which we discuss in detail in terms of orientifolds of dimer diagrams.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. v3: version accepted in JHEP with minor corrections in the introduction and extra reference

On the 3-form formulation of axion potentials from D-brane instantons

The study of axion models and quantum corrections to their potential has experienced great progress by phrasing the axion potential in terms of a 3-form field eating up the 2-form field dual to the axion. Such reformulation of the axion potential has been described for axion monodromy models, and for axion potentials from non-perturbative gauge dynamics. In this paper we propose a 3-form description of the axion potentials from non-gauge D-brane instantons. Interestingly, the required 3-form field does not arise in the underlying geometry, but rather shows up in the KK compactification in the generalized geometry obtained when the backreaction of the D-brane instanton is taken into account.Comment: 17 pages. Backreacting D-brane instantons on branes at singularities

Non-perturbative D-brane instanton effects in 4d N = 1 string compactifications can be geometrized in terms of a backreacted generalized geometry. We extend earlier results to setups in which the D-brane instanton is charged under the 4d gauge symmetries, and show that the backreacted topology yields the correct charged field theory operators in the 4d effective action. In type IIA models with D6-branes, the backreaction of D2-brane instantons forces the recombination of D6-branes, such that the 4d charged field theory operators arise from basic worldsheet instantons in the backreacted geometry. We provide large classes of examples of D2-brane instanton effects on intersecting D6-brane systems in local models mirror to D3-branes at singularities. The backreacted geometry and the field theory operators are easily encoded in terms of simple operation in the graphs arising from the underlying dimer diagrams. This description agrees, in the appropriate cases, with the complex deformations triggered by certain fractional branes at the bottom of duality cascades.Comment: 40 pages, 27 Figures,v2 Minor correction

Brane Boxes and Branes on Singularities

Brane Box Models of intersecting NS and D5 branes are mapped to D3 branes at C^3/Gamma orbifold singularities and vise versa, in a setup which gives rise to N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions. The Brane Box Models are constructed on a two-torus. The map is interpreted as T-duality along the two directions of the torus. Some Brane Box Models contain NS fivebranes winding around (p,q) cycles in the torus, and our method provides the geometric T-dual to such objects. An amusing aspect of the mapping is that T-dual configurations are calculated using D=4 N=1 field theory data. The mapping to the singularity picture allows the geometrical interpretation of all the marginal couplings in finite field theories. This identification is further confirmed using the AdS/CFT correspondence for orbifold theories. The AdS massless fields coupling to the marginal operators in the boundary appear as stringy twisted sectors of S^5/Gamma. The mapping for theories which are non-finite requires the introduction of fractional D3 branes in the singularity picture.Comment: 55 pages, 13 figure
