    k-core organization of complex networks

    We analytically describe the architecture of randomly damaged uncorrelated networks as a set of successively enclosed substructures -- k-cores. The k-core is the largest subgraph where vertices have at least k interconnections. We find the structure of k-cores, their sizes, and their birth points -- the bootstrap percolation thresholds. We show that in networks with a finite mean number z_2 of the second-nearest neighbors, the emergence of a k-core is a hybrid phase transition. In contrast, if z_2 diverges, the networks contain an infinite sequence of k-cores which are ultra-robust against random damage.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Correlation of fine needle aspiration cytology with histopathology for thyroid swellings in a tertiary care hospital in South India

    Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is documented to be a good tool in the diagnosis of thyroid lesions. It has good diagnostic accuracy and is an inexpensive investigation. Although a good instrument it does have its own limitations especially when it comes to distinguishing a follicular adenoma from follicular carcinoma thyroid. Objectives of the study was the evaluation of FNAC in the diagnosis of thyroid lesions by determining its sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy, positive predictive value and negative predictive value. Material and methods. This is a retrospective study of 580 cases of thyroid swelling admitted to our hospital and undergone thyroidectomy over a period of 5 years from 2015 to 2020. After thyroidectomy, FNAC reports (Bethesda system for reporting) of those patients were collected and were compared and analyzed with the histopathology reports. Category 1 and category 3 cases were excluded from calculation due to uncertainty in reporting. Data were analyzed to calculate the sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of FNAC. Results. Our study included a total of 580 cases of thyroid swellings. The male to female ratio was 1:18.2 and the median age was 43 years. On FNAC, 428 cases (73.7 %) were benign, 35 cases (6 %) were indeterminate, 39 cases (6.7 %) were follicular neoplasm, 30 cases (5.1 %) were suspicious for malignancy and 34 (5.8 %) were malignant. 14 (2.4 %) cases were unsatisfactory. Cytology report was then compared with histopathological reports. FNAC had a sensitivity of 84.2 %, specificity of 97.2 % and a diagnostic accuracy of 94.5 %. The positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 88.3 and 96 % respectively. Conclusions. FNAC is a more specific than sensitive when distinguishing between benign and malignant lesions of thyroid. It has good diagnostic accuracy and hence should be used in all tertiary care hospitals prior to surgery in diagnosing thyroid lesions

    A localized outbreak of Chikungunya virus in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

    A localized Chikungunya virus (CHIKV; East/Central/South African genotype) outbreak (50 cases, 70% laboratory-confirmed; attack rate: 5.3 confirmed cases/100 people) occurred in a Salvador, Brazil neighborhood, between Apr-Jun/2017. Highly clustered cases in space and time, mostly along a single street, highlight an increased risk of CHIKV transmission among pockets of susceptible populations.     Clinical Features, Imaging Characteristics, and Long-term Outcome of Dogs with Cranial Meningocele or Meningoencephalocele

    BACKGROUND: The term meningoencephalocele (MEC) describes a herniation of cerebral tissue and meninges through a defect in the cranium, whereas a meningocele (MC) is a herniation of the meninges alone.HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical features, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics, and outcomes of dogs with cranial MC and MEC.ANIMALS: Twenty-two client-owned dogs diagnosed with cranial MC or MEC.METHODS: Multicentric retrospective descriptive study. Clinical records of 13 institutions were reviewed. Signalment, clinical history, neurologic findings and MRI characteristics as well as treatment and outcome were recorded and evaluated.RESULTS: Most affected dogs were presented at a young age (median, 6.5 months; range, 1 month - 8 years). The most common presenting complaints were seizures and behavioral abnormalities. Intranasal MEC was more common than parietal MC. Magnetic resonance imaging identified meningeal enhancement of the protruded tissue in 77% of the cases. Porencephaly was seen in all cases with parietal MC. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis identified mild abnormalities in 4 of 11 cases. Surgery was not performed in any affected dog. Seventeen patients were treated medically, and seizures were adequately controlled with anti-epileptic drugs in 10 dogs. Dogs with intranasal MEC and mild neurologic signs had a fair prognosis with medical treatment.CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Although uncommon, MC and MEC should be considered as a differential diagnosis in young dogs presenting with seizures or alterations in behavior. Medical treatment is a valid option with a fair prognosis when the neurologic signs are mild.</p

    Charge separation relative to the reaction plane in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}= 2.76 TeV

    Measurements of charge dependent azimuthal correlations with the ALICE detector at the LHC are reported for Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV. Two- and three-particle charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in the pseudo-rapidity range η<0.8|\eta| < 0.8 are presented as a function of the collision centrality, particle separation in pseudo-rapidity, and transverse momentum. A clear signal compatible with a charge-dependent separation relative to the reaction plane is observed, which shows little or no collision energy dependence when compared to measurements at RHIC energies.     In this small note we are concerned with the solution of Forward-Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (FBSDE) with drivers that grow quadratically in the control component (quadratic growth FBSDE or qgFBSDE). The main theorem is a comparison result that allows comparing componentwise the signs of the control processes of two different qgFBSDE.     Multiplicity dependence of jet-like two-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV

    Two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The transverse-momentum range 0.7 <pT,assoc<pT,trig< < p_{\rm{T}, assoc} < p_{\rm{T}, trig} < 5.0 GeV/cc is examined, to include correlations induced by jets originating from low momen\-tum-transfer scatterings (minijets). The correlations expressed as associated yield per trigger particle are obtained in the pseudorapidity range η<0.9|\eta|<0.9. The near-side long-range pseudorapidity correlations observed in high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions are subtracted from both near-side short-range and away-side correlations in order to remove the non-jet-like components. The yields in the jet-like peaks are found to be invariant with event multiplicity with the exception of events with low multiplicity. This invariance is consistent with the particles being produced via the incoherent fragmentation of multiple parton--parton scatterings, while the yield related to the previously observed ridge structures is not jet-related. The number of uncorrelated sources of particle production is found to increase linearly with multiplicity, suggesting no saturation of the number of multi-parton interactions even in the highest multiplicity p-Pb collisions. Further, the number scales in the intermediate multiplicity region with the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions estimated with a Glauber Monte-Carlo simulation.Comment: 23 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 17, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/161
