Behavioural reactivity of two lines of South African Merino sheep divergently selected for reproductive potential
The behavioural reactivity of two divergently selected lines of South African Merino sheep for an increased (HL: N = 1187) and reduced (LL: N = 285) number of lambs weaned per ewe mated was investigated using a docility test and a ‘scale’ test. The objective of this study was to determine whether these two lines, which differed significantly in terms of reproduction performance, would also react differently when exposed to novel and challenging situations. In the first test, an individual animal was moved to the test pen by an experienced handler then an unfamiliar or familiar human entered the test pen and tried to encourage the animal to move into a marked area for 3 min. The test was terminated if the animal could not be moved within 3 min, came out of the marked area or if the animal could be contained in the marked area for 30 s (successful test). The latency of the animal to enter and time contained in the square area was recorded as well as whether the animal was bleating or urinating/defecating during the test. No difference was found between production lines and handler in terms of the success of the test and latency to enter (P > 0.05). LL sheep were however contained for longer and bleated more than HL sheep (P < 0.05). Sex differences were also observed, with ewes being more difficult to successfully contain and bleating more than rams, especially when exposed to an unfamiliar human (P < 0.05)
Remarks on the Formulation of Quantum Mechanics on Noncommutative Phase Spaces
We consider the probabilistic description of nonrelativistic, spinless
one-particle classical mechanics, and immerse the particle in a deformed
noncommutative phase space in which position coordinates do not commute among
themselves and also with canonically conjugate momenta. With a postulated
normalized distribution function in the quantum domain, the square of the Dirac
delta density distribution in the classical case is properly realised in
noncommutative phase space and it serves as the quantum condition. With only
these inputs, we pull out the entire formalisms of noncommutative quantum
mechanics in phase space and in Hilbert space, and elegantly establish the link
between classical and quantum formalisms and between Hilbert space and phase
space formalisms of noncommutative quantum mechanics. Also, we show that the
distribution function in this case possesses 'twisted' Galilean symmetry.Comment: 25 pages, JHEP3 style; minor changes; Published in JHE
Thermodynamics of Black Holes in Two (and Higher) Dimensions
A comprehensive treatment of black hole thermodynamics in two-dimensional
dilaton gravity is presented. We derive an improved action for these theories
and construct the Euclidean path integral. An essentially unique boundary
counterterm renders the improved action finite on-shell, and its variational
properties guarantee that the path integral has a well-defined semi-classical
limit. We give a detailed discussion of the canonical ensemble described by the
Euclidean partition function, and examine various issues related to stability.
Numerous examples are provided, including black hole backgrounds that appear in
two dimensional solutions of string theory. We show that the Exact String Black
Hole is one of the rare cases that admits a consistent thermodynamics without
the need for an external thermal reservoir. Our approach can also be applied to
certain higher-dimensional black holes, such as Schwarzschild-AdS,
Reissner-Nordstrom, and BTZ.Comment: 63 pages, 3 pdf figures, v2: added reference
Reversible Pressure-Induced Amorphization in Solid C70 : Raman and Photoluminescence Study
We have studied single crystals of by Raman scattering and
photoluminescence in the pressure range from 0 to 31.1 GPa. The Raman spectrum
at 31.1 GPa shows only a broad band similar to that of the amorphous carbon
without any trace of the Raman lines of . After releasing the pressure
from 31.1 GPa, the Raman and the photoluminescence spectra of the recovered
sample are that of the starting crystal. These results indicate that
the molecules are stable upto 31.1 GPa and the amorphous carbon high
pressure phase is reversible, in sharp contrast to the results on solid
. A qualitative explaination is suggested in terms of inter- versus
intra-molecular interactions.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. Lett., 12 pages, RevTeX (preprint format), 3

Ab initio optical properties of Si(100)
We compute the linear optical properties of different reconstructions of the
clean and hydrogenated Si(100) surface within DFT-LDA, using norm-conserving
pseudopotentials. The equilibrium atomic geometries of the surfaces, determined
from self-consistent total energy calculations within the Car-Parrinello
scheme, strongly influence Reflectance Anisotropy Spectra (RAS), showing
differences between the p(2x2) and c(4x2)reconstructions. The Differential
Reflectivity spectrum for the c(4x2) reconstruction shows a positive peak at
energies < 1 eV, in agreement with experimental results.Comment: fig. 2 correcte
Measurement of the partial widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks
Using the entire OPAL LEP1 on-peak Z hadronic decay sample, Z -> qbarq gamma
decays were selected by tagging hadronic final states with isolated photon
candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter. Combining the measured rates of
Z -> qbarq gamma decays with the total rate of hadronic Z decays permits the
simultaneous determination of the widths of the Z into up- and down-type
quarks. The values obtained, with total errors, were Gamma u = 300 ^{+19}_{-18}
MeV and Gamma d = 381 ^{+12}_{-12} MeV. The results are in good agreement with
the Standard Model expectation.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.
Search for R-Parity Violating Decays of Scalar Fermions at LEP
A search for pair-produced scalar fermions under the assumption that R-parity
is not conserved has been performed using data collected with the OPAL detector
at LEP. The data samples analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of
about 610 pb-1 collected at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) 189-209 GeV. An
important consequence of R-parity violation is that the lightest supersymmetric
particle is expected to be unstable. Searches of R-parity violating decays of
charged sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks have been performed under the
assumptions that the lightest supersymmetric particle decays promptly and that
only one of the R-parity violating couplings is dominant for each of the decay
modes considered. Such processes would yield final states consisting of
leptons, jets, or both with or without missing energy. No significant
single-like excess of events has been observed with respect to the Standard
Model expectations. Limits on the production cross- section of scalar fermions
in R-parity violating scenarios are obtained. Constraints on the supersymmetric
particle masses are also presented in an R-parity violating framework analogous
to the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.Comment: 51 pages, 24 figures, Submitted to Eur. Phys. J.
Measurement of Leading Proton and Neutron Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Deep--inelastic scattering events with a leading baryon have been detected by
the H1 experiment at HERA using a forward proton spectrometer and a forward
neutron calorimeter. Semi--inclusive cross sections have been measured in the
kinematic region 2 <= Q^2 <= 50 GeV^2, 6.10^-5 <= x <= 6.10^-3 and baryon p_T
<= MeV, for events with a final state proton with energy 580 <= E' <= 740 GeV,
or a neutron with energy E' >= 160 GeV. The measurements are used to test
production models and factorization hypotheses. A Regge model of leading baryon
production which consists of pion, pomeron and secondary reggeon exchanges
gives an acceptable description of both semi-inclusive cross sections in the
region 0.7 <= E'/E_p <= 0.9, where E_p is the proton beam energy. The leading
neutron data are used to estimate for the first time the structure function of
the pion at small Bjorken--x.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Eur. Phys.
Energy Flow in the Hadronic Final State of Diffractive and Non-Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA
An investigation of the hadronic final state in diffractive and
non--diffractive deep--inelastic electron--proton scattering at HERA is
presented, where diffractive data are selected experimentally by demanding a
large gap in pseudo --rapidity around the proton remnant direction. The
transverse energy flow in the hadronic final state is evaluated using a set of
estimators which quantify topological properties. Using available Monte Carlo
QCD calculations, it is demonstrated that the final state in diffractive DIS
exhibits the features expected if the interaction is interpreted as the
scattering of an electron off a current quark with associated effects of
perturbative QCD. A model in which deep--inelastic diffraction is taken to be
the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure is found to reproduce the
measurements well. Models for deep--inelastic scattering, in which a
sizeable diffractive contribution is present because of non--perturbative
effects in the production of the hadronic final state, reproduce the general
tendencies of the data but in all give a worse description.Comment: 22 pages, latex, 6 Figures appended as uuencoded fil
Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final
