Psychological Factors in the Etiology of Pulmonary Tuberculosis, and in the Causation of Relapse

    Get PDF
No investigation using controls has hitherto been carried out into emotional factors preceding the onset or relapse of cases of pulmonary tuberculosis. Only one investigation, using controls, into premorbid tuberculous personality type has been carried out and the results of this were negative. In the series of three Investigations described, control cases were used and all the results subjected to statistical testing. The material, methods and conditions of the Investigations are described in detail. These show the care that has been taken to ensure unbiased results. All the cases, tuberculosis and controls, were unselected. The total number of cases included in the First Investigation - into Emotional Factors preceding Onset - is 198. Of these 64 were subsequently diagnosed as suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. The remaining 134 controls included 46 who had no abnormality and 14 who had psychosomatic affections. The number of cases included in the Second Investigation - into Emotional Factors preceding Relapse - is 194, of whom 73 had relapsed. The other 121 were used as controls. In addition, there were 20 'chronics', described in the Appendix. 69 patients are included in the Third Investigation and 24 of these were subsequently found to have pulmonary tuberculosis, the remainder being the controls. The findings of this Investigation are used to corroborate the findings of the First Investigation. An unselected 45 of these patients are used In a modified investigation into personality trait, 20 subsequently proving to be tuberculous and the remaining 25 acting as controls. The importance of psychological assessment of the patient and his family is stressed. Some possible methods of psychological treatment are mentioned - short term exploratory abreactive methods, 'superficial psychotherapy' and 'anaclitic therapy' with a psychoanalytical basis. The place of the sanatorium in treatment is discussed and attention drawn to the Breaks in Love Links both to the patient and his family -especially children - caused by removal of a patient from his home. Since in many cases home treatment may be as effective as sanatorium treatment, the dangers of infection to others must be carefully weighed against the dangers of psychological trauma to the patient or other members of the family - unless there are definite indications for sanatorium treatment. The chief indications for sanatorium are - (i) Special treatment (e. g. , surgery or collapse) necessitating admission; (ii) Poor home conditions; (iii) Unfavourable psychological background. Likewise, the wisdom of segregation for the purposes of B. C. G. vaccination is questioned. (Abstract shortened by ProQuest.)

In Storrs, Connecticut, Without a Pass, or Why High School Teachers Need NWSA

Prologue: May 28, 1981. I am standing in the office of my school principal, trying to explain NWSA in terms that will be understandable to him, but not too threatening. I am trying to convince the administration to give me four days of professional leave to attend the Convention. On the desk before us is a two-page letter in which I have stated, as professionally as possible, my reasons for wanting these four days of leave—the ideas and materials that the Convention will give me for my twelfth-grade women\u27s studies class (an English elective which will continue to be offered next year in spite of the changes brought about by the passage of Proposition 2½ in Massachusetts, because it is one of the most popular courses in the department); the importance of the Convention to my academic career as a graduate student in women\u27s studies (our administration considers professional development through courses and graduate programs a high priority for teachers); the significance of the Convention\u27s theme, Women Respond to Racism, for a teacher whose students rarely encounter a person of color (our ten-year state evaluation cited minority literature as one area in which our English Department needed improvement). All the while, I know, as surely as I know that my request will be refused, that no one but me has read a word of my statement. We negotiate, and I am granted two days\u27 leave to go to the NWSA Convention...

Frass from yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) as plant fertilizer and defense priming agent

Producción CientíficaWorld population growth requires the development of a sustainable agriculture that allows feeding all the inhabitants of the planet, while reducing the use of agrochemicals. Currently, the insect farming industry for food and feed production is developing exponentially throughout the world; also producing insect frass with a potential utilization within agriculture and greenhouse industry. In the case of the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), few studies have been developed so far on the use of frass as a fertilizer, and there are none on its ability to activate plant defenses. By applying 2% sterilized mealworm frass to tomato we found a significant increase in its growth, demonstrating that the microbiota might not play a key role in its fertilizing capacity. In addition, the application of frass to sunflowers under different situations of nutritional deficit allowed us to determine what specific nutrients this fertilizer may be providing to the plant, finding a possible deficiency in the supply of N, but with sufficient amounts of P, K, Ca, and S. With respect to the induction of defenses, mealworm insect frass did not induce local root defenses in a root callose deposition assay in Arabidopsis thaliana under our experimental conditions. However, it activated systemic defenses in Arabidopsis thaliana by inducing defense genes in the absence of pathogen, further enhanced by infection with the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea. Therefore, mealworm frass could be a good fertilizer resource and plant defense inducer to support development of sustainable agriculture.Norwegian Research Council (grant RCN 250953

Oilseed rape seeds with ablated defence cells of the glucosinolate–myrosinase system. Production and characteristics of double haploid MINELESS plants of Brassica napus L.

Oilseed rape and other crop plants of the family Brassicaceae contain a unique defence system known as the glucosinolate–myrosinase system or the ‘mustard oil bomb’. The ‘mustard oil bomb’ which includes myrosinase and glucosinolates is triggered by abiotic and biotic stress, resulting in the formation of toxic products such as nitriles and isothiocyanates. Myrosinase is present in specialist cells known as ‘myrosin cells’ and can also be known as toxic mines. The myrosin cell idioblasts of Brassica napus were genetically reprogrammed to undergo controlled cell death (ablation) during seed development. These myrosin cell-free plants have been named MINELESS as they lack toxic mines. This has led to the production of oilseed rape with a significant reduction both in myrosinase levels and in the hydrolysis of glucosinolates. Even though the myrosinase activity in MINELESS was very low compared with the wild type, variation was observed. This variability was overcome by producing homozygous seeds. A microspore culture technique involving non-fertile haploid MINELESS plants was developed and these plants were treated with colchicine to produce double haploid MINELESS plants with full fertility. Double haploid MINELESS plants had significantly reduced myrosinase levels and glucosinolate hydrolysis products. Wild-type and MINELESS plants exhibited significant differences in growth parameters such as plant height, leaf traits, matter accumulation, and yield parameters. The growth and developmental pattern of MINELESS plants was relatively slow compared with the wild type. The characteristics of the pure double haploid MINELESS plant are described and its importance for future biochemical, agricultural, dietary, functional genomics, and plant defence studies is discussed

What Has Psychoanalysis got to do with happiness? Reclaiming the positive in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

This paper questions whether what is a strength of psychoanalysis – its focus on painful and difficult experiences and its ability to remain in touch with the negative aspects of the personality – might also be an Achilles heel. The paper discusses research from neuroscience, developmental and social psychology to argue that more attention needs to be given to how we work with more positive and hopeful aspects of the personality, and that otherwise psychoanalytic psychotherapists are not working with the whole person. Some clinical examples are used to illustrate how these ideas might be used
