    Quantum Oscillations in an Impurity-Band Anderson Insulator

    We show that for a system of localized electrons in an impurity band, which form an Anderson insulating state at zero temperature, there can appear quantum oscillations of the magnetization, i.e. the Anderson insulator can exhibit the de Haas-van Alphen effect. This is possible when the electronic band from which the localized states are formed has an extremum that traces out a nonzero area in reciprocal space. Our work extends existing theories for clean band insulators of this form to the situation where they host an impurity band. We show that the energies of these impurity levels oscillate with magnetic field, and compute the conditions under which these oscillations can dominate the de Haas-van Alphen effect. We discuss our results in connection with experimental measurements of quantum oscillations in Kondo insulators, and propose other experimental systems where the impurity band contribution can be dominant.Comment: Submission to SciPost, updated following referee comment

    High-temperature phase transitions in dense germanium.

    Through a series of high-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments combined with in situ laser heating, we explore the pressure-temperature phase diagram of germanium (Ge) at pressures up to 110 GPa and temperatures exceeding 3000 K. In the pressure range of 64-90 GPa, we observe orthorhombic Ge-IV transforming above 1500 K to a previously unobserved high-temperature phase, which we denote as Ge-VIII. This high-temperature phase is characterized by a tetragonal crystal structure, space group I4/mmm. Density functional theory simulations confirm that Ge-IV becomes unstable at high temperatures and that Ge-VIII is highly competitive and dynamically stable at these conditions. The existence of Ge-VIII has profound implications for the pressure-temperature phase diagram, with melting conditions increasing to much higher temperatures than previous extrapolations would imply

    Synthesis of Superconducting Cobalt Trihydride

    The Co–H system has been investigated through high-pressure, high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments combined with first-principles calculations. On compression of elemental cobalt in a hydrogen medium, we observe face-centered cubic cobalt hydride (CoH) and cobalt dihydride (CoH2) above 33 GPa. Laser heating CoH2_2 in a hydrogen matrix at 75 GPa to temperatures in excess of ∼800 K produces cobalt trihydride (CoH3_3) which adopts a primitive structure. Density functional theory calculations support the stability of CoH3_3. This phase is predicted to be thermodynamically stable at pressures above 18 GPa and to be a superconductor below 23 K. Theory predicts that this phase remains dynamically stable upon decompression above 11 GPa where it has a maximum Tc of 30 K

Byron’s sardonic perception of himself as a biblical exile foreshadowed the allusive character of his second longer-term exile at the age of twenty-eight, when his carefully staged exit required an audience (some of the same friends and servants), expensive props (a replica of Napoleon’s carriage) and a literary precursor. On his last evening in England, Byron visited the burial place of the satirist Charles Churchill, and lay down on his grave.     “If Southey had not been comparatively good,” writes Herbert F. Tucker, “he would never have drawn out Byron’s best in those satirical volleys that were undertaken, at bottom, in order to reprehend not the want of talent but its wastage.” And if Wordsworth and Coleridge had not been dangerously talented, Byron might have spared them some of his stinging sallies. In Table Talk Coleridge proclaimed the conclusion of the “intellectual war” Byron threatened in Don Juan (XI. 62: 496), declaring Wordsworth the poet who “will wear the crown,” triumphing over Byron and his ilk for the poetic laurels of the Romantic period. But Byron was not simply an opponent of his contemporaries. His responses to the Lake poets, particularly to Wordsworth, ran the gamut from “reverence” (HVSV, 129) then “nausea” (Medwin, 237) to Don Juan’s comical though cutting disdain, in under a decade. Focusing on Byron’s relationship with Wordsworth and Coleridge, I will show how Byron’s poetry and drama reveal the range and complexity of his dialogue with his older peers, where, even at their most apparently divergent, the conversation between the poets reveals the depth of the engagement across their works

    Recent research on Gulf War illness and other health problems in veterans of the 1991 Gulf War: Effects of toxicant exposures during deployment

    Veterans of Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield - the 1991 Gulf War (GW) - are a unique population who returned from theater with multiple health complaints and disorders. Studies in the U.S. and elsewhere have consistently concluded that approximately 25-32% of this population suffers from a disorder characterized by symptoms that vary somewhat among individuals and include fatigue, headaches, cognitive dysfunction, musculoskeletal pain, and respiratory, gastrointestinal and dermatologic complaints. Gulf War illness (GWI) is the term used to describe this disorder. In addition, brain cancer occurs at increased rates in subgroups of GW veterans, as do neuropsychological and brain imaging abnormalities. Chemical exposures have become the focus of etiologic GWI research because nervous system symptoms are prominent and many neurotoxicants were present in theater, including organophosphates (OPs), carbamates, and other pesticides; sarin/cyclosarin nerve agents, and pyridostigmine bromide (PB) medications used as prophylaxis against chemical warfare attacks. Psychiatric etiologies have been ruled out. This paper reviews the recent literature on the health of 1991 GW veterans, focusing particularly on the central nervous system and on effects of toxicant exposures. In addition, it emphasizes research published since 2008, following on an exhaustive review that was published in that year that summarizes the prior literature (RACGWI, 2008). We conclude that exposure to pesticides and/or to PB are causally associated with GWI and the neurological dysfunction in GW veterans. Exposure to sarin and cyclosarin and to oil well fire emissions are also associated with neurologically based health effects, though their contribution to development of the disorder known as GWI is less clear. Gene-environment interactions are likely to have contributed to development of GWI in deployed veterans. The health consequences of chemical exposures in the GW and other conflicts have been called "toxic wounds" by veterans. This type of injury requires further study and concentrated treatment research efforts that may also benefit other occupational groups with similar exposure-related illnesses
