    EXPERIMENTS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERDE AND SEYIR IN TURKISH MAKAM MUSIC

    "WHEN I WAS A KID, THE ELDERS IN THE VILLAGE COULD TELL THE MAKAM OF A PIECE JUST BY LISTENING." While interviewing performers, enthusiasts, and experts in traditional Turkish taksims (improvisations), variations of this comment were made many times. Some of the respondents claimed to be able to identify the makam of a taksim, but others believed that this ability might now be a lost art. This paper documents a series of experiments (based on caricaturized or skeletonized taksim-like creations) designed to determine if it is possible to identify the makam from purely acoustical features, and, when possible, to determine the relative importance of the various audible features that may be used to establish the makam. Two basic classes of features are investigated: perde (the set of pitches used in the performance) and seyir (which relates to temporal motion within the piece, for instance, repetitive or common motives or melodic contour). The experiments provide evidence that both kinds of features contribute to the ability to recognize makams. Experiments that randomize the order of events show that pitch cues (perde) are often adequate to allow accurate identification of the makam. In experiments where both pitch and temporal cues are present but conflict (for example, a piece in which the perde is chosen from one makam and the seyir from another), experts often favor the temporal information

    Broadband multilevel fast multipole algorithm for large-scale problems with nonuniform discretizations

    We present a broadband implementation of the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) for fast and accurate solutions of multiscale problems involving highly nonuniform discretizations. Incomplete tree structures, which are based on population-based clustering with flexible leaf-level boxes at different levels, are used to handle extremely varying triangulation sizes on the same structures. Superior efficiency and accuracy of the developed implementation, in comparison to the standard and broadband MLFMA solvers employing conventional tree structures, are demonstrated on practical problems. © 2016 IEEE

    Proerythroblast Cells of Diamond-Blackfan Anemia Patients With RPS19 and CECR1 Mutations Have Similar Transcriptomic Signature

    Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA) is an inherited bone marrow (BM) failure syndrome, characterized by a paucity of erythroid differentiation. DBA is mainly caused by the mutations in ribosomal protein genes, hence classified as ribosomopathy. However, in approximately 30% of patients, the molecular etiology cannot be discovered. RPS19 germline mutations caused 25% of the cases. On the other hand, CECR1 mutations also cause phenotypes similar to DBA but not being a ribosomopathy. Due to the blockade of erythropoiesis in the BM, we investigated the transcriptomic profile of three different cell types of BM resident cells of DBA patients and compared them with healthy donors. From BM aspirates BM mononuclear cells (MNCs) were isolated and hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) [CD71–CD34+ CD38mo/lo], megakaryocyte–erythroid progenitor cells (MEP) [CD71–CD34+ CD38hi] and Proerythroblasts [CD71+ CD117+ CD38+] were sorted and analyzed with a transcriptomic approach. Among all these cells, proerythroblasts had the most different transcriptomic profile. The genes associated with cellular stress/immune responses were increased and some of the transcription factors that play a role in erythroid differentiation had altered expression in DBA proerythroblasts. We also showed that gene expression levels of ribosomal proteins were decreased in DBA proerythroblasts. In addition to these, colony formation assay (CFU-E) provided functional evidence of the failure of erythroid differentiation in DBA patients. According to our findings that all patients resembling both RPS19 and CECR1 mutations have common transcriptomic signatures, it may be possible that inflammatory BM niche may have a role in DBA pathogenesis

    Sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation of the spleen: CT, MR, PET, and 99mTc-sulfur colloid SPECT CT findings with gross and histopathological correlation

    Sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) is a benign, proliferative vascular lesion affecting the spleen. Few reports detailing the cross sectional and PET appearance of this lesion are available, and the lesion’s behavior with 99mTc-sulfur colloid scintigraphy is previously unreported. Sclerosing nodular transformation of the spleen shows increased tracer accumulation on positron emission tomography, and a central scar-like appearance with an enhancing capsule and radiating septae on CT and MR studies that reflects the gross and histopathological features of the lesion may be visible. An understanding of this pathological finding may allow prospective recognition of the sclerosing nodular transformation of the spleen on cross sectional imaging studies

    Of the importance of a leaf: the ethnobotany of sarma in Turkey and the Balkans

    BACKGROUND: Sarma - cooked leaves rolled around a filling made from rice and/or minced meat, possibly vegetables and seasoning plants - represents one of the most widespread feasting dishes of the Middle Eastern and South-Eastern European cuisines. Although cabbage and grape vine sarma is well-known worldwide, the use of alternative plant leaves remains largely unexplored. The aim of this research was to document all of the botanical taxa whose leaves are used for preparing sarma in the folk cuisines of Turkey and the Balkans. Methods: Field studies were conducted during broader ethnobotanical surveys, as well as during ad-hoc investigations between the years 2011 and 2014 that included diverse rural communities in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey. Primary ethnobotanical and folkloric literatures in each country were also considered. Results: Eighty-seven botanical taxa, mainly wild, belonging to 50 genera and 27 families, were found to represent the bio-cultural heritage of sarma in Turkey and the Balkans. The greatest plant biodiversity in sarma was found in Turkey and, to less extent, in Bulgaria and Romania. The most commonly used leaves for preparing sarma were those of cabbage (both fresh and lacto-fermented), grape vine, beet, dock, sorrel, horseradish, lime tree, bean, and spinach. In a few cases, the leaves of endemic species (Centaurea haradjianii, Rumex gracilescens, and R. olympicus in Turkey) were recorded. Other uncommon sarma preparations were based on lightly toxic taxa, such as potato leaves in NE Albania, leaves of Arum, Convolvulus, and Smilax species in Turkey, of Phytolacca americana in Macedonia, and of Tussilago farfara in diverse countries. Moreover, the use of leaves of the introduced species Reynoutria japonica in Romania, Colocasia esculenta in Turkey, and Phytolacca americana in Macedonia shows the dynamic nature of folk cuisines. Conclusion: The rich ethnobotanical diversity of sarma confirms the urgent need to record folk culinary plant knowledge. The results presented here can be implemented into initiatives aimed at re-evaluating folk cuisines and niche food markets based on local neglected ingredients, and possibly also to foster trajectories of the avant-garde cuisines inspired by ethnobotanical knowledge

    Large negative lymph nodes – a surrogate for immune activation in rectal cancer patients?

    Aim: The size of regional, tumor draining lymph nodes without metastasis (LNneg) found in rectal cancer resection specimens varies and seems to be related to patient survival. Yet, the histopathological features influencing LNneg size in rectal cancer have not been studied in detail. Our pilot study focused on investigating the relationship between lymph node (LN) size and LNneg microarchitecture in rectal cancer (RC) resection specimens. Method: In this retrospective cohort study, resection specimens from 146 RC patients, treated with either surgery alone (n = 29) or neoadjuvant therapy followed by resection (n = 117), were included in the study. Histology of LNnegs was reviewed to establish number of lymphoid follicles and presence of intranodal fat. Longest long axis and area of each LN were measured digitally. Results: 1830 LNnegs were measured. The microarchitecture was analyzed in a subset of 680 LNnegs. 153 (22.5 %) LNnegs contained intranodal fat. After neoadjuvant treatment, presence of intranodal fat was related to smaller LNneg area (median (range) area of LNneg without intranodal fat: 4.51 mm2 (0.15-46.89 mm2), with intranodal fat: 3.46 mm2 (0.12-27.22 mm2), p = 0.048). A higher number of lymphoid follicles was related to a larger LNneg area in both patient groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Our pilot data suggest that in rectal cancer the presence of large regional LNnegs may reflect increased immune activation due to tumor related antigens. Further studies are warranted to investigate whether histologically visible microarchitectural features of LNnegs such as lymphoid follicles translate to particular features in radiological images and hence could potentially help to identify LNneg with more certainty at the time of pre-treatment disease staging

    Drawing on theories of place identity and social identity, this study aims to fill a gap in place identity studies regarding the effect of a place website on the destination image of customers/visitors/tourists. The research addresses three questions: (1) what are the main impacts of tourists’ attitude on place identity and the place website, (2) what are the factors that influence destination image, and (3) what are the main impacts of a favorable destination image? The favorability of a destination image is reflected by the extent to which visitors positively regard that place website. Results reveal the importance of the destination image in enhancing the intention to revisit and recommend. Also, visitors’ satisfaction impacts on their intention to revisit and recommend the place. Significant implications for place managers and researchers are highlighted
