Coupled Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov kinetic equations for a trapped Bose gas
Using the Kadanoff-Baym non-equilibrium Green's function formalism, we derive
the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) collisionless kinetic
equations and the associated equation of motion for the condensate wavefunction
for a trapped Bose-condensed gas. Our work generalizes earlier work by Kane and
Kadanoff (KK) for a uniform Bose gas. We include the off-diagonal (anomalous)
pair correlations, and thus we have to introduce an off-diagonal distribution
function in addition to the normal (diagonal) distribution function. This
results in two coupled kinetic equations. If the off-diagonal distribution
function can be neglected as a higher-order contribution, we obtain the
semi-classical kinetic equation recently used by Zaremba, Griffin and Nikuni
(based on the simpler Popov approximation). We discuss the static local
equilibrium solution of our coupled HFB kinetic equations within the
semi-classical approximation. We also verify that a solution is the rigid
in-phase oscillation of the equilibrium condensate and non-condensate density
profiles, oscillating with the trap frequency.Comment: 25 page
Dynamics of the Tippe Top via Routhian Reduction
We consider a tippe top modeled as an eccentric sphere, spinning on a
horizontal table and subject to a sliding friction. Ignoring translational
effects, we show that the system is reducible using a Routhian reduction
technique. The reduced system is a two dimensional system of second order
differential equations, that allows an elegant and compact way to retrieve the
classification of tippe tops in six groups as proposed in [1] according to the
existence and stability type of the steady states.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, added reference. Typos corrected and a forgotten

An Exact Diagonalization Demonstration of Incommensurability and Rigid Band Filling for N Holes in the t-J Model
We have calculated S(q) and the single particle distribution function
for N holes in the t - J model on a non--square sqrt{8} X sqrt{32} 16--site
lattice with periodic boundary conditions; we justify the use of this lattice
in compariosn to those of having the full square symmetry of the bulk. This new
cluster has a high density of vec k points along the diagonal of reciprocal
space, viz. along k = (k,k). The results clearly demonstrate that when the
single hole problem has a ground state with a system momentum of vec k =
(pi/2,pi/2), the resulting ground state for N holes involves a shift of the
peak of the system's structure factor away from the antiferromagnetic state.
This shift effectively increases continuously with N. When the single hole
problem has a ground state with a momentum that is not equal to k =
(pi/2,pi/2), then the above--mentioned incommensurability for N holes is not
found. The results for the incommensurate ground states can be understood in
terms of rigid--band filling: the effective occupation of the single hole k =
(pi/2,pi/2) states is demonstrated by the evaluation of the single particle
momentum distribution function . Unlike many previous studies, we show
that for the many hole ground state the occupied momentum states are indeed k =
(+/- pi/2,+/- pi/2) states.Comment: Revtex 3.0; 23 pages, 1 table, and 13 figures, all include
Sliding Luttinger liquid phases
We study systems of coupled spin-gapped and gapless Luttinger liquids. First,
we establish the existence of a sliding Luttinger liquid phase for a system of
weakly coupled parallel quantum wires, with and without disorder. It is shown
that the coupling can {\it stabilize} a Luttinger liquid phase in the presence
of disorder. We then extend our analysis to a system of crossed Luttinger
liquids and establish the stability of a non-Fermi liquid state: the crossed
sliding Luttinger liquid phase (CSLL). In this phase the system exhibits a
finite-temperature, long-wavelength, isotropic electric conductivity that
diverges as a power law in temperature as . This two-dimensional
system has many properties of a true isotropic Luttinger liquid, though at zero
temperature it becomes anisotropic. An extension of this model to a
three-dimensional stack exhibits a much higher in-plane conductivity than the
conductivity in a perpendicular direction.Comment: Revtex, 18 pages, 8 figure
Spin-Charge Separation in the Model: Magnetic and Transport Anomalies
A real spin-charge separation scheme is found based on a saddle-point state
of the model. In the one-dimensional (1D) case, such a saddle-point
reproduces the correct asymptotic correlations at the strong-coupling
fixed-point of the model. In the two-dimensional (2D) case, the transverse
gauge field confining spinon and holon is shown to be gapped at {\em finite
doping} so that a spin-charge deconfinement is obtained for its first time in
2D. The gap in the gauge fluctuation disappears at half-filling limit, where a
long-range antiferromagnetic order is recovered at zero temperature and spinons
become confined. The most interesting features of spin dynamics and transport
are exhibited at finite doping where exotic {\em residual} couplings between
spin and charge degrees of freedom lead to systematic anomalies with regard to
a Fermi-liquid system. In spin dynamics, a commensurate antiferromagnetic
fluctuation with a small, doping-dependent energy scale is found, which is
characterized in momentum space by a Gaussian peak at (, ) with
a doping-dependent width (, is the doping
concentration). This commensurate magnetic fluctuation contributes a
non-Korringa behavior for the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate. There also
exits a characteristic temperature scale below which a pseudogap behavior
appears in the spin dynamics. Furthermore, an incommensurate magnetic
fluctuation is also obtained at a {\em finite} energy regime. In transport, a
strong short-range phase interference leads to an effective holon Lagrangian
which can give rise to a series of interesting phenomena including linear-
resistivity and Hall-angle. We discuss the striking similarities of these
theoretical features with those found in the high- cuprates and give aComment: 70 pages, RevTex, hard copies of 7 figures available upon request;

The Serret-Andoyer Formalism in Rigid-Body Dynamics: I. Symmetries and Perturbations
This paper reviews the Serret-Andoyer (SA) canonical formalism in rigid-body
dynamics and presents some new results. As is well known, the problem of
unsupported and unperturbed rigid rotator can be reduced. The availability of
this reduction is offered by the underlying symmetry, which stems from
conservation of the angular momentum and rotational kinetic energy. When a
perturbation is turned on, these quantities are no longer preserved.
Nonetheless, the language of reduced description remains extremely instrumental
even in the perturbed case. We describe the canonical reduction performed by
the Serret-Andoyer (SA) method, and discuss its applications to attitude
dynamics and to the theory of planetary rotation. Specifically, we consider the
case of angular-velocity-dependent torques, and discuss the
variation-of-parameters-inherent antinomy between canonicity and osculation.
Finally, we address the transformation of the Andoyer variables into the
action-angle ones, using the method of Sadov
Search for new physics in events with opposite-sign leptons, jets, and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model (BSM) in final
states with a pair of opposite-sign isolated leptons accompanied by jets and
missing transverse energy. The search uses LHC data recorded at a
center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the CMS detector, corresponding to
an integrated luminosity of approximately 5 inverse femtobarns. Two
complementary search strategies are employed. The first probes models with a
specific dilepton production mechanism that leads to a characteristic kinematic
edge in the dilepton mass distribution. The second strategy probes models of
dilepton production with heavy, colored objects that decay to final states
including invisible particles, leading to very large hadronic activity and
missing transverse energy. No evidence for an event yield in excess of the
standard model expectations is found. Upper limits on the BSM contributions to
the signal regions are deduced from the results, which are used to exclude a
region of the parameter space of the constrained minimal supersymmetric
extension of the standard model. Additional information related to detector
efficiencies and response is provided to allow testing specific models of BSM
physics not considered in this paper.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
An Observational Overview of Solar Flares
We present an overview of solar flares and associated phenomena, drawing upon
a wide range of observational data primarily from the RHESSI era. Following an
introductory discussion and overview of the status of observational
capabilities, the article is split into topical sections which deal with
different areas of flare phenomena (footpoints and ribbons, coronal sources,
relationship to coronal mass ejections) and their interconnections. We also
discuss flare soft X-ray spectroscopy and the energetics of the process. The
emphasis is to describe the observations from multiple points of view, while
bearing in mind the models that link them to each other and to theory. The
present theoretical and observational understanding of solar flares is far from
complete, so we conclude with a brief discussion of models, and a list of
missing but important observations.Comment: This is an article for a monograph on the physics of solar flares,
inspired by RHESSI observations. The individual articles are to appear in
