    Screening for breast cancer : medicalization, visualization and the embodied experience

    Women’s perspectives on breast screening (mammography and breast awareness) were explored in interviews with midlife women sampled for diversity of background and health experience. Attending mammography screening was considered a social obligation despite women’s fears and experiences of discomfort. Women gave considerable legitimacy to mammography visualizations of the breast, and the expert interpretation of these. In comparison, women lacked confidence in breast awareness practices, directly comparing their sensory capabilities with those of the mammogram, although mammography screening did not substitute breast awareness in a straightforward way. The authors argue that reliance on visualizing technology may create a fragmented sense of the body, separating the at risk breast from embodied experience

    Gender, Socioeconomic Status, and Time Use of Married and Cohabiting Parents during the Great Recession

    Using data from the 2003-14 American Time Use Survey (ATUS), this paper examines the relationship between the state unemployment rate and the time that opposite-sex couples with children spend on childcare activities, and how this varies by the socioeconomic status (SES), race, and ethnicity of the mothers and fathers. The time that mothers and fathers spend providing primary and secondary child caregiving, solo time with children, and any time spent as a family are considered. To explore the impact of macroeconomic conditions on the amount of time parents spend with children, the time-use data are combined with the state unemployment rate data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The analysis finds that the time parents spend on child-caregiving activities or with their children varies with the unemployment rate in low-SES households, African-American households, and Hispanic households. Given that job losses were disproportionately high for workers with no college degree, African-Americans, and Hispanics during the Great Recession, the results suggest that the burden of household adjustment during the crisis fell disproportionately on the households most affected by the recession

    Genomic Relationships, Novel Loci, and Pleiotropic Mechanisms across Eight Psychiatric Disorders

    Genetic influences on psychiatric disorders transcend diagnostic boundaries, suggesting substantial pleiotropy of contributing loci. However, the nature and mechanisms of these pleiotropic effects remain unclear. We performed analyses of 232,964 cases and 494,162 controls from genome-wide studies of anorexia nervosa, attention-deficit/hyper-activity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, and Tourette syndrome. Genetic correlation analyses revealed a meaningful structure within the eight disorders, identifying three groups of inter-related disorders. Meta-analysis across these eight disorders detected 109 loci associated with at least two psychiatric disorders, including 23 loci with pleiotropic effects on four or more disorders and 11 loci with antagonistic effects on multiple disorders. The pleiotropic loci are located within genes that show heightened expression in the brain throughout the lifespan, beginning prenatally in the second trimester, and play prominent roles in neurodevelopmental processes. These findings have important implications for psychiatric nosology, drug development, and risk prediction.Peer reviewe

    Degradation of macroalgae detritus:how does detritus from macroalgae cultivation affect carbon release from marine sediments?

    Macroalgae cultivation can lead to loss of detritus before the algae are harvested, either from loss of whole thalli or erosion of tissue. When labile organic matter (LOM) is added to the sediment, a “priming effect” of the degradation of organic matter in the sediment can occur. A previous study found indications of microbial priming, as the mineralized carbon exceeded the amount of carbon in the added macroalgae. The aim of this study is to investigate microbial degradation of detritus from the species Ulva sp. and Saccharina latissima, and the potential priming effect in the sediment. Two laboratory experiments were conducted using sediment cores collected in Limfjorden. To start the flux experiment fresh algae tissue was added to each core. Measurements of O2, DIC and dissolved inorganic nutrient fluxes were taken at day 1, 5, 12, 20, 40 and 80 after the addition of algae. Results of the first lab experiment indicates significant effect of treatment and time on O2 flux. The results contribute to the discussion of whether macroalgae detritus from cultivation will contribute to carbon sequestration or stimulate increased degradation of carbon buried in the sediment

    Listening to music prior to bronchoscopy reduces anxiety – a randomised controlled trial

    Background: Listening to music as a means of relieving anxiety before and during endoscopy has been examined in several studies but results so far are contradictory and inconclusive. Aims: We aimed to determine whether listening to music could reduce anxiety prior to and during bronchoscopy, and whether it is influenced by the patient’s preference in music. Methods: 300 patients undergoing bronchoscopy for suspected lung cancer were randomly assigned to: self-selected music, specially-designed music (MusiCureTM), or control (no sound). Spielberger’s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was administered three times: at admission, after 20 min with or without music (preceding bronchoscopy), and shortly before discharge. The primary outcome was STAI state score after 20 min, with or without exposure to music prior to bronchoscopy. Results: On average, music reduced the STAI score by 2.5 points (95% CI, 1.1 to 4.0; p < 0.001) compared with the control group. This reduction was largest in the self-selected music group (3.4; 95% CI, 1.5 to 5.3; p < 0.001). In contrast, specially designed music did not significantly reduce STAI score (1.7; 95% CI, −0.3 to 3.6; p = 0.1). Conclusion: Listening to music reduces anxiety in patients undergoing bronchoscopy, provided that the music complies with the patient’s preferences
