Commutators, Lefschetz fibrations and the signatures of surface bundles
We construct examples of Lefschetz fibrations with prescribed singular
fibers. By taking differences of pairs of such fibrations with the same
singular fibers, we obtain new examples of surface bundles over surfaces with
non-zero signature. From these we derive new upper bounds for the minimal genus
of a surface representing a given element in the second homology of a mapping

Highly restricted localization of RNA polymerase II within a locus control region of a tissue-specific chromatin domain
RNA polymerase II (Pol II) can associate with regulatory elements far from promoters. For the murine β-globin locus, Pol II binds the β-globin locus control region (LCR) far upstream of the β-globin promoters, independent of recruitment to and activation of the βmajor promoter. We describe here an analysis of where Pol II resides within the LCR, how it is recruited to the LCR, and the functional consequences of recruitment. High-resolution analysis of the distribution of Pol II revealed that Pol II binding within the LCR is restricted to the hypersensitive sites. Blocking elongation eliminated the synthesis of genic and extragenic transcripts and eliminated Pol II from the βmajor open reading frame. However, the elongation blockade did not redistribute Pol II at the hypersensitive sites, suggesting that Pol II is recruited to these sites. The distribution of Pol II did not strictly correlate with the distributions of histone acetylation and methylation. As Pol II associates with histone-modifying enzymes, Pol II tracking might be critical for establishing and maintaining broad histone modification patterns. However, blocking elongation did not disrupt the histone modification pattern of the β-globin locus, indicating that Pol II tracking is not required to maintain the pattern
Absorption spectrum in the wings of the potassium second resonance doublet broadened by helium
We have measured the reduced absorption coefficients occurring in the wings
of the potassium 4S-5P doublet lines at 404.414 nm and at 404.720 nm broadened
by helium gas at pressures of several hundred Torr. At the experimental
temperature of 900 K, we have detected a shoulder-like broadening feature on
the blue wing of the doublet which is relatively flat between 401.8 nm and
402.8 nm and which drops off rapidly for shorter wavelengths, corresponding to
absorption from the X doublet Sigma+ state to the C doublet Sigma+ state of the
K-He quasimolecule. The accurate measurements of the line profiles in the
present work will sharply constrain future calculations of potential energy
surfaces and transition dipole moments correlating to the asymptotes He-K(5p),
He-K(5s), and He-K(3d).Comment: 2 figure
Multi-Element Abundance Measurements from Medium-Resolution Spectra. II. Catalog of Stars in Milky Way Dwarf Satellite Galaxies
We present a catalog of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances for 2961 red giant
stars that are likely members of eight dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky
Way (MW): Sculptor, Fornax, Leo I, Sextans, Leo II, Canes Venatici I, Ursa
Minor, and Draco. For the purposes of validating our measurements, we also
observed 445 red giants in MW globular clusters and 21 field red giants in the
MW halo. The measurements are based on Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution
spectroscopy combined with spectral synthesis. We estimate uncertainties in
[Fe/H] by quantifying the dispersion of [Fe/H] measurements in a sample of
stars in monometallic globular clusters. We estimate uncertainties in Mg, Si,
Ca, and Ti abundances by comparing our medium-resolution spectroscopic
measurements to high-resolution spectroscopic abundances of the same stars. For
this purpose, our DEIMOS sample included 132 red giants with published
high-resolution spectroscopy in globular clusters, the MW halo field, and dwarf
galaxies. The standard deviations of the differences in [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe]
(the average of [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Ti/Fe]) between the two samples
is 0.15 and 0.16, respectively. This catalog represents the largest sample of
multi-element abundances in dwarf galaxies to date. The next papers in this
series draw conclusions on the chemical evolution, gas dynamics, and star
formation histories from the catalog presented here. The wide range of dwarf
galaxy luminosity reveals the dependence of dwarf galaxy chemical evolution on

Exotic torus manifolds and equivariant smooth structures on quasitoric manifolds
In 2006 Masuda and Suh asked if two compact non-singular toric varieties
having isomorphic cohomology rings are homeomorphic. In the first part of this
paper we discuss this question for topological generalizations of toric
varieties, so-called torus manifolds. For example we show that there are
homotopy equivalent torus manifolds which are not homeomorphic. Moreover, we
characterize those groups which appear as the fundamental groups of locally
standard torus manifolds.
In the second part we give a classification of quasitoric manifolds and
certain six-dimensional torus manifolds up to equivariant diffeomorphism.
In the third part we enumerate the number of conjugacy classes of tori in the
diffeomorphism group of torus manifolds. For torus manifolds of dimension
greater than six there are always infinitely many conjugacy classes. We give
examples which show that this does not hold for six-dimensional torus

An abundance study of red-giant-branch stars in the Hercules dwarf spheroidal galaxy
Using high-resolution spectroscopy, we provide a determination of [Fe/H] and
[Ca/H] for confirmed red-giant branch member stars of the Hercules dwarf
spheroidal galaxy. Based on this we explore the ages of the prevailing stellar
populations in Hercules, and the enrichment history from supernovae.
Additionally, we provide a new simple metallicity calibration for Stromgren
photometry for metal-poor, red giant branch stars. We find that the red-giant
branch stars of the Hercules dSph galaxy are more metal-poor than estimated in
our previous study that was based on photometry alone. Additionally, we find an
abundance trend such that [Ca/Fe] is higher for more metal-poor stars, and
lower for more metal-rich stars, with a spread of about 0.8 dex. The [Ca/Fe]
trend suggests an early rapid chemical enrichment through supernovae of type
II, followed by a phase of slow star formation dominated by enrichment through
supernovae of type Ia. A comparison with isochrones indicates that the red

The characteristics of sexual abuse in sport: A multidimensional scaling analysis of events described in media reports
Most research on sexual abuse has been conducted within family settings (Fergusson & Mullen, 1999). In recent years, following several high profile convictions and scandals, research into sexual abuse has also encompassed institutional and community settings such as sport and the church (Gallagher, 2000; Wolfe et al., 2003). Research into sexual abuse in sport, for example, began with both prevalence studies (Kirby & Greaves, 1996; Leahy, Pretty & Tenenbaum, 2002) and qualitative analyses of the processes and experiences of athlete sexual abuse (Brackenridge, 1997; Cense & Brackenridge, 2001, Toftegaard Nielsen, 2001). From such work, descriptions of the modus operandi of abusers in sport, and the experiences and consequences for athlete victims, have been provided, informing both abuse prevention work and coach education. To date, however, no study has provided empirical support for multiple associations or identified patterns of sex offending in sport in ways that might allow comparisons with research-generated models of offending outside sport. This paper reports on an analysis of 159 cases of criminally defined sexual abuse, reported in the print media over a period of 15 years. The main aim of the study was to identify the nature of sex offending in sport focusing on the methods and locations of offences. The data were analysed using multidimensional scaling (MDS), as a data reduction method, in order to identify the underlying themes within the abuse and explore the inter-relationships of behaviour, victim and context variables. The findings indicate that there are specific themes that can be identified within the perpetrator strategies that include âintimateâ, âaggressiveâ, and ââdominantâ modes of interaction. The same patterns that are described here within the specific context of sport are consistent with themes that emerge from similar behavioural analyses of rapists (Canter & Heritage, 1990; Bishopp, 2003) and child molester groups (Canter, Hughes & Kirby, 1998). These patterns show a correspondence to a broader behavioural model â the interpersonal circumplex (e.g., Leary 1957). Production of ent-kaurene from lignocellulosic hydrolysate in Rhodosporidium toruloides.
BACKGROUND:Rhodosporidium toruloides has emerged as a promising host for the production of bioproducts from lignocellulose, in part due to its ability to grow on lignocellulosic feedstocks, tolerate growth inhibitors, and co-utilize sugars and lignin-derived monomers. Ent-kaurene derivatives have a diverse range of potential applications from therapeutics to novel resin-based materials. RESULTS:The Design, Build, Test, and Learn (DBTL) approach was employed to engineer production of the non-native diterpene ent-kaurene in R. toruloides. Following expression of kaurene synthase (KS) in R. toruloides in the first DBTL cycle, a key limitation appeared to be the availability of the diterpene precursor, geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP). Further DBTL cycles were carried out to select an optimal GGPP synthase and to balance its expression with KS, requiring two of the strongest promoters in R. toruloides, ANT (adenine nucleotide translocase) and TEF1 (translational elongation factor 1) to drive expression of the KS from Gibberella fujikuroi and a mutant version of an FPP synthase from Gallus gallus that produces GGPP. Scale-up of cultivation in a 2 L bioreactor using a corn stover hydrolysate resulted in an ent-kaurene titer of 1.4 g/L. CONCLUSION:This study builds upon previous work demonstrating the potential of R. toruloides as a robust and versatile host for the production of both mono- and sesquiterpenes, and is the first demonstration of the production of a non-native diterpene in this organism
Influence of Population III stars on cosmic chemical evolution
New observations from the Hubble ultra deep field suggest that the star
formation rate at z>7 drops off faster than previously thought. Using a newly
determined star formation rate for the normal mode of Population II/I stars
(PopII/I), including this new constraint, we compute the Thomson scattering
optical depth and find a result that is marginally consistent with WMAP5
results. We also reconsider the role of Population III stars (PopIII) in light
of cosmological and stellar evolution constraints. While this input may be
needed for reionization, we show that it is essential in order to account for
cosmic chemical evolution in the early Universe. We investigate the
consequences of PopIII stars on the local metallicity distribution function of
the Galactic halo (from the recent Hamburg/ESO survey of metal-poor stars) and
on the evolution of abundances with metallicity (based on the ESO large program
on very metal-poor stars), with special emphasis on carbon-enhanced metal-poor
stars. Our most important results show that the nucleosynthetic yields of
PopIII stars lead to abundance patterns in agreement with those observed in
extremely metal-poor stars. In this chemical approach to cosmic evolution,
PopIII stars prove to be a compulsory ingredient, and extremely metal-poor
