    Let them hear our voices, singing in harmony: A qualitative case study on a workplace choir

    The present study was undertaken to investigate a novel example of music in a workplace setting, employees singing together. Music listening at work and music making in a choral context are typically separate areas of study in the current research literature. Music listening at work is associated with various positive emotional, psychological, and physical outcomes (Haake, 2011; Korzcynski, 2003; Lesiuk, 2005; Stachyra, 2015), as is active choral music participation and creation (Bailey & Davidson, 2005; Brisola & Cury, 2015; Clift, Nicol, Raisbreck, Whitmore, & Morrison, 2010; Merkt, 2012; Silber, 2005; Stewart & Lonsdale, 2016). In order to provide a foundational understanding of active music participation in a work context, a qualitative case study was used to explore a unique workplace choir that is maintained and managed by employees in a care home in Atlantic Canada. The motivations for implementing and maintaining such an ensemble were examined, as well as the perceived benefits of choir membership. Findings suggested that the implementation of this particular workplace choir was influenced by a rich musical culture in the province as well as strong organizational acceptance and support. Choir members reported numerous benefits encapsulated within the themes of Personal Wellbeing, Personal Growth, Purposeful Work, and Serving Others.     To move towards a more open science, we must free the data

    Data sharing is a key principle of open science, and research funders are increasingly including this as a condition of grant awards. Despite this, Jessica Couture reports on research that found little more than a quarter of relevant research projects to be compliant. While there are valid reasons for certain data not to be made available - its sensitivity or the ease of its interpretation, for example – these findings indicate more needs to be done. A fundamental obstacle to data sharing is the absence of a professional reward structure, such as recognition that data citations are as valuable as article citations. Funders can also encourage data sharing compliance by creating dedicated data archives for funded projects and providing technological assistance to awardees

    Mind the gap between ICES nations' future seafood consumption and aquaculture production

    As the human population grows and climate change threatens the stability of seafood sources, we face the key question of how we will meet increasing demand, and do so sustainably. Many of the 20 International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) member nations have been global leaders in the protection and management of wild fisheries, but to date, most of these nations have not developed robust aquaculture industries. Using existing data and documentation of aquaculture targets from government and industry, we compiled and analysed past trends in farmed and wild seafood production and consumption in ICES nations, as well as the potential and need to increase aquaculture production by 2050. We found that the majority of ICES nations lacks long-term strategies for aquaculture growth, with an increasing gap between future domestic production and consumption—resulting in a potential 7 million tonne domestic seafood deficit by 2050, which would be supplemented by imports from other countries (e.g. China). We also found recognition of climate change as a concern for aquaculture growth, but little on what that means for meeting production goals. Our findings highlight the need to prioritize aquaculture policy to set more ambitious domestic production goals and/or improve sustainable sourcing of seafood from other parts of the world, with explicit recognition and strategic planning for climate change affecting such decisions. In short, there is a need for greater concerted effort by ICES member nations to address aquaculture’s long-term future prospects

    Implicating genes, pleiotropy, and sexual dimorphism at blood lipid loci through multi-ancestry meta-analysis

    Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s).Background: Genetic variants within nearly 1000 loci are known to contribute to modulation of blood lipid levels. However, the biological pathways underlying these associations are frequently unknown, limiting understanding of these findings and hindering downstream translational efforts such as drug target discovery. Results: To expand our understanding of the underlying biological pathways and mechanisms controlling blood lipid levels, we leverage a large multi-ancestry meta-analysis (N = 1,654,960) of blood lipids to prioritize putative causal genes for 2286 lipid associations using six gene prediction approaches. Using phenome-wide association (PheWAS) scans, we identify relationships of genetically predicted lipid levels to other diseases and conditions. We confirm known pleiotropic associations with cardiovascular phenotypes and determine novel associations, notably with cholelithiasis risk. We perform sex-stratified GWAS meta-analysis of lipid levels and show that 3–5% of autosomal lipid-associated loci demonstrate sex-biased effects. Finally, we report 21 novel lipid loci identified on the X chromosome. Many of the sex-biased autosomal and X chromosome lipid loci show pleiotropic associations with sex hormones, emphasizing the role of hormone regulation in lipid metabolism. Conclusions: Taken together, our findings provide insights into the biological mechanisms through which associated variants lead to altered lipid levels and potentially cardiovascular disease risk.Peer reviewe
