Recovery of Crash Site Web Application

    Get PDF
Any airplane crash is followed by investigations, search and rescue operations, and clean ups. Determining the debris concentration and affected areas is a challenge for the first responders and clean-up crews as they work based on their past experiences. Recovery of Crash Site is a web application which projects the estimated debris area using the various crash characteristics. It is developed to help the first responders, clean-up crews, and investigators to initiate the search for the debris and work more efficiently by reducing the guesswork. Testing the application on various devices gives the results which can be very helpful for transportation safety and aviation industry

The Extent of Adoption of HRIS: An Empirical Investigation with Mediators & Moderators

    Get PDF
Existing literature on the HRIS acceptance is exploratory with little emphasis on rigorous theoretical development. In the current study, we bring together disparate threads of HRIS research and employ the innovation diffusion model and the TAM model to explicate the extent of adoption of HRIS among Indian firms. The findings of empirical research show that OHR, FHR and SHR contribute to the performance of HR systems which further drives the extent of adoption within the organization. Further, the variable ‘performance consideration’ acts as a mediator and the variation in organizational size and work experience do not lead to drastic changes in extent of adoption. It is also found that the impact of HRIS functions does not vary with the intensity of organization size, work experience and technology facilitation. Lastly, our work captures the increasingly important role of strategic HR function within HRIS which is a major deviation from previous works

Prevalence of haemoglobinopathies in anemic females

Background: The β-thalassemias and various other hemoglobinopathies are a major health problem in India.  An accurate diagnosis of patients suffering from β-thalassemia syndrome and other hemoglobinopathies is important for prevention and management of major hemoglobin disorders. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a highly sensitive and specific method for the accurate diagnosis of thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies. Methods: Present study was conducted on 1400 females of reproductive age group for screening of hemoglobinopathies in a rural block of north India. Patients were evaluated for presence of anemia with detailed hematological workup. Anemia cases were further screened by HPLC system for presence of any hemoglobinopathy. Results: 855 subjects out of a total of 1400 were found to be anemic. 359 patients had normocytic normochromic anemia, 399 had microcytic hypochromic picture, 37 had macrocytic picture, while 60 patients had dimorphic anemia. 47 cases were detected positive for various types of hemoglobinopathies. 36 patients were positive for β-thalassemia trait/ heterozygous forming the major portion (76.5%), while one (2%) patient was β-thalassemia intermedia / homozygous and was non-transfusion dependent. 3 patients were positive for HbE heterozygous and hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin each, two for HbD Punjab, one each for HbS heterozygous and Hb Lepore. Conclusions: The detection of various hemoglobinopathies is the key to diagnosis and proper treatment of various types of anemia. Antenatal screening should be an integral part of workup in pregnant females to prevent morbidity related to hemoglobinopathies like thalassemias

New Bilateral Type Generating Function Associated with I

    Get PDF
We aim at establishing a new bilateral type generating function associated with the I-function and a Mellin-Barnes type of contour integral. The results derived here are of general character and can yield a number of (known and new) results in the theory of generating functions

Designing for the Infrastructure of the Supply Chain of Malay Handwoven Songket in Terengganu

The growing HCI interest in developing contexts and cultural craft practices is ripe to focus on their under-explored homegrown sociotechnical infrastructures. This paper explores the creative infrastructural actions embedded within the practices of songket's supply chain in Terengganu, Malaysia. We report on contextual interviews with 92 participants including preparation workers, weavers, designers, merchants, and customers. Findings indicate that increased creative infrastructural actions are reflected in these actors' resourcefulness for mobilizing information, materials, and equipment, and for making creative artifacts through new technologies weaved within traditional practices. We propose two novel approaches to design in this craft-based infrastructure. First, we explore designing for the social layer of infrastructure and its mutually advantageous exploitative relationships rooted in culture and traditions. Second, we suggest designing for roaming value-creation artifacts, which blend physical and digital materializations of songket textile design. Developed through a collaborative and asynchronous process, we argue that these artifacts represent less-explored vehicles for value co-creation, and that sociotechnical infrastructures as emerging sites of innovation could benefit from HCI research

Understanding the Impacts of Outdoor Air Pollution on Social Inequality: Advancing a Just Transition Framework

    Get PDF
Outdoor air pollution is a major environmental risk that caused over 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide in 2016. In this article, we investigate how groups with lower social-economic status are disproportionally affected by outdoor air pollution. Based on a comparative case study of two heavily polluted urban areas around Beijing and Delhi, we find that people's economic welfare and political rights are affected disproportionally not only by toxic air pollutants, but also through various policy interventions, market activities, and social practices designed to reduce or adapt to air pollution. Drawing on the concepts of environmental justice and just transitions, we present an analytical framework for investigating the links between outdoor air pollution and social inequalities. The framework enables a better understanding of structural constraints, political constraints and protective constraints in the context of outdoor air pollution and their impacts on social vulnerabilities with particular relevance to fast industrialising countries. We also provide recommendations on how to design and implement air pollution policies and social interventions in a socially inclusive manner

Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI
