Late-onset bloodstream infection and perturbed maturation of the gastrointestinal microbiota in premature infants
Late-onset bloodstream infection (LO-BSI) is a common complication of prematurity, and lack of timely diagnosis and treatment can have life-threatening consequences. We sought to identify clinical characteristics and microbial signatures in the gastrointestinal microbiota preceding diagnosis of LO-BSI in premature infants.Daily faecal samples and clinical data were collected over two years from 369 premature neonates (<32 weeks gestation). We analysed samples from 22 neonates who developed LO-BSI and 44 matched control infants. Next-generation sequencing of 16S rRNA gene regions amplified by PCR from total faecal DNA was used to characterise the microbiota of faecal samples preceding diagnosis from infants with LO-BSI and controls. Culture of selected samples was undertaken, and bacterial isolates identified using MALDI-TOF. Antibiograms from bloodstream and faecal isolates were compared to explore strain similarity.From the week prior to diagnosis, infants with LO-BSI had higher proportions of faecal aerobes/facultative anaerobes compared to controls. Risk factors for LO-BSI were identified by multivariate analysis. Enterobacteriaceal sepsis was associated with antecedent multiple lines, low birth weight and a faecal microbiota with prominent Enterobacteriaceae. Staphylococcal sepsis was associated with Staphylococcus OTU faecal over-abundance, and the number of days prior to diagnosis of mechanical ventilation and of the presence of centrally-placed lines. In 12 cases, the antibiogram of the bloodstream isolate matched that of a component of the faecal microbiota in the sample collected closest to diagnosis.The gastrointestinal tract is an important reservoir for LO-BSI organisms, pathogens translocating across the epithelial barrier. LO-BSI is associated with an aberrant microbiota, with abundant staphylococci and Enterobacteriaceae and a failure to mature towards predominance of obligate anaerobes
Augmenting the 6-3-5 method with design information
This paper describes a comparative study between the 6-3-5 Method and the ICR Grid. The ICR Grid is an evolved variant of 6-3-5 intended to better integrate information into the concept generation process. Unlike a conventional 6-3-5 process where participants continually sketch concepts, using the ICR Grid (the name derived from its Inform, Create, Reflect activities and structured, grid-like output) participants are additionally required to undertake information search tasks, use specific information items for concept development, and reflect on the merit of concepts as the session progresses. The results indicate that although the quantity of concepts was lower, the use of information had a positive effect in a number of areas, principally the quality and variety of output. Although grounded in the area of product development, this research is applicable to any organisation undertaking idea generation and problem solving. As well as providing insights on the transference of information to concepts, it holds additional interest for studies on the composition and use of digital libraries
Electrically Tunable Excitonic Light Emitting Diodes based on Monolayer WSe2 p-n Junctions
Light-emitting diodes are of importance for lighting, displays, optical
interconnects, logic and sensors. Hence the development of new systems that
allow improvements in their efficiency, spectral properties, compactness and
integrability could have significant ramifications. Monolayer transition metal
dichalcogenides have recently emerged as interesting candidates for
optoelectronic applications due to their unique optical properties.
Electroluminescence has already been observed from monolayer MoS2 devices.
However, the electroluminescence efficiency was low and the linewidth broad due
both to the poor optical quality of MoS2 and to ineffective contacts. Here, we
report electroluminescence from lateral p-n junctions in monolayer WSe2 induced
electrostatically using a thin boron nitride support as a dielectric layer with
multiple metal gates beneath. This structure allows effective injection of
electrons and holes, and combined with the high optical quality of WSe2 it
yields bright electroluminescence with 1000 times smaller injection current and
10 times smaller linewidth than in MoS2. Furthermore, by increasing the
injection bias we can tune the electroluminescence between regimes of
impurity-bound, charged, and neutral excitons. This system has the required
ingredients for new kinds of optoelectronic devices such as spin- and
valley-polarized light-emitting diodes, on-chip lasers, and two-dimensional

Trial of Optimal Personalised Care After Treatment for Gynaecological cancer (TOPCAT-G): a study protocol for a randomised feasibility trial
Background: Gynaecological cancers are diagnosed in over 1000 women in Wales every year. We estimate that this is
costing the National Health Service (NHS) in excess of £1 million per annum for routine follow-up appointments alone.
Follow-up care is not evidence-based, and there are no definitive guidelines from The National Institute for Health and
Care Excellence (NICE) for the type of follow-up that should be delivered. Standard care is to provide a regular medical
review of the patient in a hospital-based outpatient clinic for a minimum of 5 years. This study is to evaluate the
feasibility of a proposed alternative where the patients are delivered a specialist nurse-led telephone intervention
known as Optimal Personalised Care After Treatment for Gynaecological cancer (OPCAT-G), which comprised of a
protocol-based patient education, patient empowerment and structured needs assessment.
Methods: The study will recruit female patients who have completed treatment for cervical, endometrial,
epithelial ovarian or vulval cancer within the previous 3 months in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board
(BCUHB) in North Wales. Following recruitment, participants will be randomised to one of two arms in the trial
(standard care or OPCAT-G intervention). The primary outcomes for the trial are patient recruitment and attrition
rates, and the secondary outcomes are quality of life, health status and capability, using the EORTC QLQ-C30, EQ-
5D-3L and ICECAP-A measures. Additionally, a client service receipt inventory (CSRI) will be collected in order to
pilot an economic evaluation.
Discussion: The results from this feasibility study will be used to inform a fully powered randomised controlled
trial to evaluate the difference between standard care and the OPCAT-G intervention.

Deuteron and antideuteron production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV
The production of deuterons and antideuterons in the transverse momentum
range 1.1 < p_T < 4.3 GeV/c at mid-rapidity in Au + Au collisions at
sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV has been studied by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. A
coalescence analysis comparing the deuteron and antideuteron spectra with those
of protons and antiprotons, has been performed. The coalescence probability is
equal for both deuterons and antideuterons and increases as a function of p_T,
which is consistent with an expanding collision zone. Comparing (anti)proton
yields p_bar/p = 0.73 +/- 0.01, with (anti)deuteron yields: d_bar/d = 0.47 +/-
0.03, we estimate that n_bar/n = 0.64 +/- 0.04.Comment: 326 authors, 6 pages text, 5 figures, 1 Table. Submitted to PRL.

Single Electrons from Heavy Flavor Decays in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV
The invariant differential cross section for inclusive electron production in
p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment
at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range $0.4
<= p_T <= 5.0 GeV/c at midrapidity (eta <= 0.35). The contribution to the
inclusive electron spectrum from semileptonic decays of hadrons carrying heavy
flavor, i.e. charm quarks or, at high p_T, bottom quarks, is determined via
three independent methods. The resulting electron spectrum from heavy flavor
decays is compared to recent leading and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD
calculations. The total cross section of charm quark-antiquark pair production
is determined as sigma_(c c^bar) = 0.92 +/- 0.15 (stat.) +- 0.54 (sys.) mb.Comment: 329 authors, 6 pages text, 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.

Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays
The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device
in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken
during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the
number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for
all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The
efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments
reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per
layer is approximately 5 ns
A systematic review of protocol studies on conceptual design cognition
This paper reports the first systematic review and synthesis of protocol studies on conceptual design cognition. 47 protocol studies from the domains of architectural design, engineering design, and product de-sign engineering were reviewed towards answering the following re-search question: What is our current understanding of the cognitive processes involved in conceptual design tasks carried out by individual designers? Studies were found to reflect three viewpoints on the cognitive nature of designing, namely: design as search; design as ex-ploration; and design activities. Synthesising the findings of individual studies yielded a classification of cognitive processes involved in con-ceptual design tasks, described in different terms across different viewpoints. Towards a common terminology, these processes are posi-tioned within the cognitive psychology literature, revealing seven basic types of process that appear to be fundamental to designing across all viewpoints: memory (working and long term); visual perception; men-tal imagery; attention; semantic association; cognitive control; and higher-order processes, e.g. analysis and reasoning. The development of common cognitive models of conceptual design, grounded in a sci-entifically rigorous understanding of design cognition, is identified as an avenue for future research
