ACTN3 R577X Polymorphism does not Influence Explosive Leg Muscle Power in Elite Volleyball Players
We examined the association of R577X polymorphism (rs1815739) in the α-actinin-3 (ACTN3) gene with “explosive” leg muscle power performance in a group of male and female elite volleyball players (n=66, 31 men, 35 women) and in a group of non-athletic male and female young adults (n=334, 243 men, 91 women). We assessed power performance by means of the vertical squat and counter-movement jump tests. We also determined whether the genotypic frequencies of the ACTN3 R577X genotypes differed between groups. We did not observe any effect of the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism on study phenotypes in both groups, regardless of gender (all P>0.05). Genotype frequencies were similar between volleyball and control groups (P=0.095). Moreover, we did not find an association between the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and the likelihood of being an elite volleyball player using the dominant (RR vs RX+XX) and the recessive model (RR+RX vs XX). In summary, these findings suggest that the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism does not influence explosive leg muscle power in elite volleyball players
Nature of the spin-glass phase at experimental length scales
We present a massive equilibrium simulation of the three-dimensional Ising
spin glass at low temperatures. The Janus special-purpose computer has allowed
us to equilibrate, using parallel tempering, L=32 lattices down to T=0.64 Tc.
We demonstrate the relevance of equilibrium finite-size simulations to
understand experimental non-equilibrium spin glasses in the thermodynamical
limit by establishing a time-length dictionary. We conclude that
non-equilibrium experiments performed on a time scale of one hour can be
matched with equilibrium results on L=110 lattices. A detailed investigation of
the probability distribution functions of the spin and link overlap, as well as
of their correlation functions, shows that Replica Symmetry Breaking is the
appropriate theoretical framework for the physically relevant length scales.
Besides, we improve over existing methodologies to ensure equilibration in
parallel tempering simulations.Comment: 48 pages, 19 postscript figures, 9 tables. Version accepted for

Janus II: a new generation application-driven computer for spin-system simulations
This paper describes the architecture, the development and the implementation
of Janus II, a new generation application-driven number cruncher optimized for
Monte Carlo simulations of spin systems (mainly spin glasses). This domain of
computational physics is a recognized grand challenge of high-performance
computing: the resources necessary to study in detail theoretical models that
can make contact with experimental data are by far beyond those available using
commodity computer systems. On the other hand, several specific features of the
associated algorithms suggest that unconventional computer architectures, which
can be implemented with available electronics technologies, may lead to order
of magnitude increases in performance, reducing to acceptable values on human
scales the time needed to carry out simulation campaigns that would take
centuries on commercially available machines. Janus II is one such machine,
recently developed and commissioned, that builds upon and improves on the
successful JANUS machine, which has been used for physics since 2008 and is
still in operation today. This paper describes in detail the motivations behind
the project, the computational requirements, the architecture and the
implementation of this new machine and compares its expected performances with
those of currently available commercial systems.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figure
New 1-aryl-3-substituted propanol derivatives as antimalarial agents
This paper describes the synthesis and in vitro antimalarial activity against a P.
falciparum 3D7 strain of some new 1-aryl-3-substituted propanol derivatives. Twelve of
the tested compounds showed an IC50 lower than 1 ÎĽM. These compounds were also tested
for cytotoxicity in murine J774 macrophages. The most active compounds were evaluated
for in vivo activity against P. berghei in a 4-day suppressive test. Compound 12 inhibited
more than 50% of parasite growth at a dose of 50 mg/kg/day. In addition, an FBIT test was
performed to measure the ability to inhibit ferriprotoporphyrin biocrystallization. This data
indicates that 1-aryl-3-substituted propanol derivatives hold promise as a new therapeutic
option for the treatment of malaria
SOBRINA Spanish study-analysing the frequency, cost and adverse events associated with overuse in primary care: protocol for a retrospective cohort study
Introduction Several institutions and quality national agencies have fostered the creation of recommendations on what not to do to reduce overuse in clinical practice. In primary care, their impact has hardly been studied. The frequency of adverse events (AEs) associated with doing what must not be done has not been analysed, either. The aim of this study is to measure the frequency of overuse and AEs associated with doing what must not be done (commission errors) in primary care and their cost. Methods and analysis A coordinated, multicentric, national project. A retrospective cohort study using computerised databases of primary care medical records from national agencies and regional health services will be conducted to analyse the frequency of the overuse due to ignore the do-not-do recommendations, and immediately afterwards, depending on their frequency, a representative random sample of medical records will be reviewed with algorithms (triggers) that determine the frequency of AEs associated with these recommendations. Cost will determine by summation of the direct costs due to the consultation, pharmacy, laboratory and imaging activities according to the cases. Ethics and dissemination The study protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of Primary Care Research of the Valencian Community. We aim to disseminate the findings through international peerreviewed journals and on the website (http://www. nohacer. es/). Outcomes will be used to incorporate algorithms into the electronic history to assist in making clinical decisions
Running pace decrease during a marathon is positively related to blood markers of muscle damage
Completing a marathon is one of the most challenging sports activities, yet the source of running fatigue during this event is not completely understood. The aim of this investigation was to determine the cause(s) of running fatigue during a marathon in warm weather
Temperature chaos is present in off-equilibrium spin-glass dynamics
Experiments featuring non-equilibrium glassy dynamics under temperature changes still await interpretation. There is a widespread feeling that temperature chaos (an extreme sensitivity of the glass to temperature changes) should play a major role but, up to now, this phenomenon has been investigated solely under equilibrium conditions. In fact, the very existence of a chaotic effect in the non-equilibrium dynamics is yet to be established. In this article, we tackle this problem through a large simulation of the 3D Edwards-Anderson model, carried out on the Janus II supercomputer. We find a dynamic effect that closely parallels equilibrium temperature chaos. This dynamic temperature-chaos effect is spatially heterogeneous to a large degree and turns out to be controlled by the spin-glass coherence length ¿. Indeed, an emerging length-scale ¿* rules the crossover from weak (at ¿ « ¿*) to strong chaos (¿ » ¿*). Extrapolations of ¿* to relevant experimental conditions are provided. © 2021, The Author(s)
Plasma copeptin as biomarker of disease progression and prognosis in cirrhosis
Lay summary: Copeptin is a fragment of the vasopressin precursor, a hormone that is known to be increased in patients with cirrhosis and that plays a role in the development of complications of the disease. Vasopressin is difficult to measure, but copeptin is a more stable molecule and is easier to measure in blood. Sola and Kerbert and colleagues have shown in a series of 361 patients that copeptin is markedly increased in patients with cirrhosis who develop complications during the following 3 months, compared to those patients who do not develop complications. Moreover, copeptin correlates with prognosis. (C) 2016 European Association for the Study of the Liver. Published by Elsevier B.V. Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions
Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma
gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their
decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma
gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have
been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) <
0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV
at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
