Nucleation Rate of Hadron Bubbles in Baryon-Free Quark-Gluon Plasma
We evaluate the factor appearing in Langer's expression for the
nucleation rate extended to the case of hadron bubbles forming in zero baryon
number cooled quark-gluon plasma. We consider both the absence and presence of
viscosity and show that viscous effects introduce only small changes in the

Adiabatic evolution of a coupled-qubit Hamiltonian
We present a general method for studying coupled qubits driven by
adiabatically changing external parameters. Extended calculations are provided
for a two-bit Hamiltonian whose eigenstates can be used as logical states for a
quantum CNOT gate. From a numerical analysis of the stationary Schroedinger
equation we find a set of parameters suitable for representing CNOT, while from
a time-dependent study the conditions for adiabatic evolution are determined.
Specializing to a concrete physical system involving SQUIDs, we determine
reasonable parameters for experimental purposes. The dissipation for SQUIDs is
discussed by fitting experimental data. The low dissipation obtained supports
the idea that adiabatic operations could be performed on a time scale shorter

Neutron charge form factor at large
The neutron charge form factor is determined from an analysis of
the deuteron quadrupole form factor data. Recent calculations, based
on a variety of different model interactions and currents, indicate that the
contributions associated with the uncertain two-body operators of shorter range
are relatively small for , even at large momentum transfer . Hence,

Superscaling of Inclusive Electron Scattering from Nuclei
We investigate the degree to which the concept of superscaling, initially
developed within the framework of the relativistic Fermi gas model, applies to
inclusive electron scattering from nuclei. We find that data obtained from the
low energy loss side of the quasielastic peak exhibit the superscaling
property, i.e., the scaling functions f(\psi') are not only independent of
momentum transfer (the usual type of scaling: scaling of the first kind), but
coincide for A \geq 4 when plotted versus a dimensionless scaling variable
\psi' (scaling of the second kind). We use this behavior to study as yet poorly

Quantum information processing with superconducting qubits in a microwave field
We investigate the quantum dynamics of a Cooper-pair box with a
superconducting loop in the presence of a nonclassical microwave field. We
demonstrate the existence of Rabi oscillations for both single- and
multi-photon processes and, moreover, we propose a new quantum computing scheme
(including one-bit and conditional two-bit gates) based on Josephson qubits

Quantum superpositions of clockwise and counterclockwise supercurrent states in the dynamics of a rf-SQUID exposed to a quantized electromagnetic field
The dynamical behavior of a superconducting quantum interference device (a
rf-SQUID) irradiated by a single mode quantized electromagnetic field is
theoretically investigated. Treating the SQUID as a flux qubit, we analyze the
dynamics of the combined system within the low lying energy Hilbert subspace
both in the asymmetric and in the symmetric SQUID potential configurations. We
show that the temporal evolution of the system is dominated by an oscillatory
behavior characterized by more than one, generally speaking, incommensurable
Rabi frequencies whose expressions are explicitly given. We find that the
external parameters may fixed in such a way to realize a control on the
dynamical replay of the total system which, for instance, may be forced to
exhibit a periodic evolution accompanied by the occurrence of an oscillatory
disappearance of entanglement between the two subsystems. We demonstrate the
possibility of generating quantum maximally entangled superpositions of the two
macroscopically distinguishable states describing clockwise and
counterclockwise supercurrents in the loop. The experimental feasibility of our

Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional double square well: Analytical solutions of the Nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation and tunneling splittings
We present a representative set of analytic stationary state solutions of the
Nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for a symmetric double square well potential
for both attractive and repulsive nonlinearity. In addition to the usual
symmetry preserving even and odd states, nonlinearity introduces quite exotic
symmetry breaking solutions - among them are trains of solitons with different
number and sizes of density lumps in the two wells. We use the symmetry
breaking localized solutions to form macroscopic quantum superpositions states

Cross-ancestry genome-wide association analysis of corneal thickness strengthens link between complex and Mendelian eye diseases
Central corneal thickness (CCT) is a highly heritable trait associated with complex eye diseases such as keratoconus and glaucoma. We perform a genome-wide association meta-analysis of CCT and identify 19 novel regions. In addition to adding support for known connective tissue-related pathways, pathway analyses uncover previously unreported gene sets. Remarkably, >20% of the CCT-loci are near or within Mendelian disorder genes. These included FBN1, ADAMTS2 and TGFB2 which associate with connective tissue disorders (Marfan, Ehlers-Danlos and Loeys-Dietz syndromes), and the LUM-DCN-KERA gene complex involved in myopia, corneal dystrophies and cornea plana. Using index CCT-increasing variants, we find a significant inverse correlation in effect sizes between CCT and keratoconus (r =-0.62, P = 5.30 Ă 10-5) but not between CCT and primary open-angle glaucoma (r =-0.17, P = 0.2). Our findings provide evidence for shared genetic influences between CCT and keratoconus, and implicate candidate genes acting in collagen and extracellular matrix regulation
Age at first birth in women is genetically associated with increased risk of schizophrenia
Prof. Paunio on PGC:n jÀsenPrevious studies have shown an increased risk for mental health problems in children born to both younger and older parents compared to children of average-aged parents. We previously used a novel design to reveal a latent mechanism of genetic association between schizophrenia and age at first birth in women (AFB). Here, we use independent data from the UK Biobank (N = 38,892) to replicate the finding of an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women, and to estimate the genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in women stratified into younger and older groups. We find evidence for an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women (P-value = 1.12E-05), and we show genetic heterogeneity between younger and older AFB groups (P-value = 3.45E-03). The genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in the younger AFB group is -0.16 (SE = 0.04) while that between schizophrenia and AFB in the older AFB group is 0.14 (SE = 0.08). Our results suggest that early, and perhaps also late, age at first birth in women is associated with increased genetic risk for schizophrenia in the UK Biobank sample. These findings contribute new insights into factors contributing to the complex bio-social risk architecture underpinning the association between parental age and offspring mental health.Peer reviewe
