Statistical methods applied to composition studies of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays
The mass composition of high energy cosmic rays above eV is a
crucial issue to solve some open questions in astrophysics such as the
acceleration and propagation mechanisms. Unfortunately, the standard procedures
to identify the primary particle of a cosmic ray shower have low efficiency
mainly due to large fluctuations and limited experimental observables. We
present a statistical method for composition studies based on several
measurable features of the longitudinal development of the CR shower such as
, , asymmetry, skewness and kurtosis. Principal component
analysis (PCA) was used to evaluate the relevance of each parameter in the
representation of the overall shower features and a linear discriminant
analysis (LDA) was used to combine the different parameters to maximize the
discrimination between different particle showers. The new parameter from LDA
provides a separation between primary gammas, proton and iron nuclei better
than the procedures based on only. The method proposed here was
successfully tested in the energy range from to eV even
when limitations of shower track length were included in order to simulate the
field of view of fluorescence telescopes
Influence of irrigated agriculture on soil microbial diversity
Organic carbon (C), bacterial biomass and structural community diversity were measured in Southern Idaho soils with long term cropping histories. The soils tested were native sagebrush vegetation (NSB), irrigated moldboard plowed crops (IMP), irrigated conservation – chisel – tilled crops (ICT) and irrigated pasture systems (IP). Organic C concentration in soils decreased in the order NSB 0–5 cm > IP 0–30 cm = ICT 0–15 cm > IMP 0–30 cm > NSB 5–15 cm = NSB 15–30 cm. Active bacterial, fungal and microbial biomass correlated with soil C as measured by the Walkely Black method in positive curvilinear relationships (r2 = 0.93, 0.80 and 0.76, respectively). Amplicon length heterogeneity (LH-PCR) DNA profiling was used to access the eubacterial diversity in all soils and at all depths. The Shannon–Weaver diversity index was used to measure the differences using the combined data from three hypervariable domains of the eubacterial 16S rRNA genes. Diversity was greatest in NSB 15–30 cm soil and lowest in the IMP soil. With the exception of IMP with the lowest diversity index, the samples highest in C (NSB 0–5 cm, IP 0–30 cm, ICT 0–15 cm) reflected lower diversity indices. However, these indices were not significantly different from each other. ICT and IP increase soil C and to some extent increase diversity relative to IMP. Since soil bacteria respond quickly to environmental changes, monitoring microbial communities may be one way to assess the impact of agricultural practices such as irrigation and tillage regime
Understanding the relationships between ecosystem services and poverty alleviation:A conceptual framework
AbstractAs interest grows in the contribution of ecosystem services to poverty alleviation, we present a new conceptual framework, synthesizing insights from existing frameworks in social–ecological systems science and international development. People have differentiated abilities to benefit from ecosystem services, and the framework places emphasis on access to services, which may constrain the poorest more than aggregate availability. Distinctions are also made between categories of ecosystem service in their contribution to wellbeing, provisioning services and cash being comparatively easy to control. The framework gives analytical space for understanding the contribution of payments for ecosystem services to wellbeing, as distinct from direct ecosystem services. It also highlights the consumption of ecosystem services by external actors, through land appropriation or agricultural commodities. Important conceptual distinctions are made between poverty reduction and prevention, and between human response options of adaptation and mitigation in response to environmental change. The framework has applications as a thinking tool, laying out important relationships such that an analyst could identify and understand these in a particular situation. Most immediately, this has research applications, as a basis for multidisciplinary, policy-relevant research, but there are also applications to support practitioners in pursuing joint policy objectives of environmental sustainability and poverty alleviation
The size of chi = arg (-Vts Vtb* Vcs* Vcb) and physics beyond the Standard Model
We analyse the allowed range of values of chi, both in the Standard Model and
in models with New Physics, pointing out that a relatively large value of chi,
e.g. of order lambda, is only possible in models where the unitarity of the 3x3
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is violated through the introduction of extra
Q=2/3 quarks. We study the interesting case where the extra quark is an
isosinglet, determining the allowed range for chi and the effect of a large chi
on various low-energy observables, such as CP asymmetries in B meson decays. We
also discuss the correlated effects which would be observable at high energy
colliders, like decays t -> cZ, modifications of the cross section and
forward-backward asymmetry in e+ e- -> ttbar and the direct production of a new
quark.Comment: LaTeX, 19 pages, 6 PS figures. Section 3 expanded. Version to be

First observation of the decay and a measurement of the ratio of branching fractions
The first observation of the decay using
data collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb, is reported. A
signal of events is obtained and the absence of signal is
rejected with a statistical significance of more than nine standard deviations.
The branching fraction is measured relative to
that of : , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and
the third is due to the uncertainty on the ratio of the and
hadronisation fractions.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett. B; ISSN 0370-269
Desenvolvimento de um roteiro conceitual para a gestão da biodiversidade e dos serviços ecossistêmicos no Caribe mexicano
Coral reefs and mangroves support rich biodiversity and provide ecosystem services that range from food, recreational benefits and coastal protection services, among others. They are one of the most threatened ecosystems by urbanization processes. In this context, we developed a conceptual framework for the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services for these coastal environments. We based our workflow on two sections: “Information base” and “Governance” and use the Puerto Morelos Coastal region as a case study for coastal protection. Puerto Morelos is between two of the most touristic destinations of Mexico (Playa del Carmen and Cancun) that has experienced an increase of population in the past four decades resulting in an intensification of multiple threats to its ecosystems. We characterized the two ecosystems with a “Management Units” strategy. An expert-based ecosystem services matrix was also described in order to connect mangroves and coral reef ecosystems with the multiple beneficiaries. Then an ecosystem model (conceptual model and Global Biodiversity model) was developed. The conceptual model was useful in understanding the interplay processes between systems regarding the ecosystem service of “Coastal Protection”. The Global Biodiversity model evidenced the human-induced shifts in the biodiversity for mangrove and coral reefs ecosystems. Also, a projection for 2035 of “best” and “worst” scenarios was applied using GLOBIO3. A DPSIR conceptual framework was used to analyze environmental problems regarding ecosystem services maintenance. Finally, we evaluated a set of policies associated with these ecosystems that favor coastal protection integrity. This framework facilitates the identification of the most relevant processes and controls about the provision of coastal protection service. It can also be useful to better target management actions and as a tool to identify future management needs to tackle the challenges preventing more effective conservation of coastal environments. A Compact Dication Source for Ba Tagging and Heavy Metal Ion Sensor Development
We present a tunable metal ion beam that delivers controllable ion currents
in the picoamp range for testing of dry-phase ion sensors. Ion beams are formed
by sequential atomic evaporation and single or multiple electron impact
ionization, followed by acceleration into a sensing region. Controllability of
the ionic charge state is achieved through tuning of electrode potentials that
influence the retention time in the ionization region. Barium, lead, and cobalt
samples have been used to test the system, with ion currents identified and
quantified using a quadrupole mass analyzer. Realization of a clean
ion beam within a bench-top system represents an important
technical advance toward the development and characterization of barium tagging
systems for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in xenon gas. This system
also provides a testbed for investigation of novel ion sensing methodologies
for environmental assay applications, with dication beams of Pb and
Cd also demonstrated for this purpose
Platelet-Related Variants Identified by Exomechip Meta-analysis in 157,293 Individuals
Platelet production, maintenance, and clearance are tightly controlled processes indicative of platelets important roles in hemostasis and thrombosis. Platelets are common targets for primary and secondary prevention of several conditions. They are monitored clinically by complete blood counts, specifically with measurements of platelet count (PLT) and mean platelet volume (MPV). Identifying genetic effects on PLT and MPV can provide mechanistic insights into platelet biology and their role in disease. Therefore, we formed the Blood Cell Consortium (BCX) to perform a large-scale meta-analysis of Exomechip association results for PLT and MPV in 157,293 and 57,617 individuals, respectively. Using the low-frequency/rare coding variant-enriched Exomechip genotyping array, we sought to identify genetic variants associated with PLT and MPV. In addition to confirming 47 known PLT and 20 known MPV associations, we identified 32 PLT and 18 MPV associations not previously observed in the literature across the allele frequency spectrum, including rare large effect (FCER1A), low-frequency (IQGAP2, MAP1A, LY75), and common (ZMIZ2, SMG6, PEAR1, ARFGAP3/PACSIN2) variants. Several variants associated with PLT/MPV (PEAR1, MRVI1, PTGES3) were also associated with platelet reactivity. In concurrent BCX analyses, there was overlap of platelet-associated variants with red (MAP1A, TMPRSS6, ZMIZ2) and white (PEAR1, ZMIZ2, LY75) blood cell traits, suggesting common regulatory pathways with shared genetic architecture among these hematopoietic lineages. Our large-scale Exomechip analyses identified previously undocumented associations with platelet traits and further indicate that several complex quantitative hematological, lipid, and cardiovascular traits share genetic factors
Systematic Review of Medicine-Related Problems in Adult Patients with Atrial Fibrillation on Direct Oral Anticoagulants
New oral anticoagulant agents continue to emerge on the market and their safety requires assessment to provide evidence of their suitability for clinical use. There-fore, we searched standard databases to summarize the English language literature on medicine-related problems (MRPs) of direct oral anticoagulants DOACs (dabigtran, rivaroxban, apixban, and edoxban) in the treatment of adults with atri-al fibrillation. Electronic databases including Medline, Embase, International Pharmaceutical Abstract (IPA), Scopus, CINAHL, the Web of Science and Cochrane were searched from 2008 through 2016 for original articles. Studies pub-lished in English reporting MRPs of DOACs in adult patients with AF were in-cluded. Seventeen studies were identified using standardized protocols, and two reviewers serially abstracted data from each article. Most articles were inconclusive on major safety end points including major bleeding. Data on major safety end points were combined with efficacy. Most studies inconsistently reported adverse drug reactions and not adverse events or medication error, and no definitions were consistent across studies. Some harmful drug effects were not assessed in studies and may have been overlooked. Little evidence is provided on MRPs of DOACs in patients with AF and, therefore, further studies are needed to establish the safety of DOACs in real-life clinical practice
