    Impurity resonance states in electron-doped high T_c superconductors

    Two scenarios, i.e., the anisotropic s-wave pairing (the s-wave scenario) and the d-wave pairing coexisting with antiferromagnetism (the coexisting scenario) have been introduced to understand some of seemingly s-wave like behaviors in electron doped cuprates. We considered the electronic structure in the presence of a nonmagnetic impurity in the coexistence scenario. We found that even if the AF order opens a full gap in quasi-particle excitation spectra, the mid-gap resonant peaks in local density of states (LDoS) around an impurity can still be observed in the presence of a d-wave pairing gap. The features of the impurity states in the coexisting phase are markedly different from the pure AF or pure d-wave pairing phases, showing the unique role of the coexisting AF and d-wave pairing orders. On the other hand, it is known that in the pure s-wave case no mid-gap states can be induced by a nonmagnetic impurity.     Traitement et exploration d'images TDM pour l'évaluation des bioprothèses valvulaires aortiques

    Le but de cette étude est d évaluer la faisabilité de l analyse tomodensitométrique 3D des bioprothèses aortiques pour faciliter leur évaluation morphologique durant le suivi et d aider la sélection de cas et améliorer la planification d une procédure valvein-valve. Le challenge était représenté par le rehaussement des feuillets valvulaires, en raison d images très bruitées. Un angio-scanner synchronisé était réalisé chez des patients porteurs d une bioprotèses aortique dégénérée avant réintervention (images in-vivo). Différentes méthodes pour la réduction du bruit étaient proposées. La reconstruction tridimensionnelle des bioprothèses était réalisée en utilisant des méthodes de segmentation de régions par "sticks". Après réopération ces méthodes étaient appliquées aux images scanner des bioprothèses explantées (images ex-vivo) et utilisées comme référence. La réduction du bruit obtenue par le filtre stick modifié montrait meilleurs résultats en rapport signal/bruit en comparaison aux filtres de diffusion anisotropique. Toutes les méthodes de segmentation ont permis une reconstruction 3D des feuillets. L analyse qualitative a montré une bonne concordance entre les images obtenues in-vivo et les altérations des bioprothèses. Les résultats des différentes méthodes étaient comparés par critères volumétriques et discutés. Les bases d'une première approche de visualisation spatio-temporelle d'images TDM 3D+T de la prothèse valvulaire ont été proposés. Elle implique des techniques de rendu volumique et de compensation de mouvement. Son application à la valve native a aussi été envisagée. Les images scanner des bioprothèses aortiques nécessitent un traitement de débruitage et de réduction des artéfacts de façon à permettre le rehaussement des feuillets prothétiques. Les méthodes basées sticks semblent constituer une approche pertinente pour caractériser morphologiquement la dégénérescence des bioprothèses.The aim of the study was to assess the feasibility of CT based 3D analysis of degenerated aortic bioprostheses to make easier their morphological assessment. This could be helpful during regular follow-up and for case selection, improved planning and mapping of valve-in-valve procedure. The challenge was represented by leaflets enhancement because of highly noised CT images. Contrast-enhanced ECG-gated CT scan was performed in patients with degenerated aortic bioprostheses before reoperation (in-vivo images). Different methods for noise reduction were tested and proposed. 3D reconstruction of bioprostheses components was achieved using stick based region segmentation methods. After reoperation, segmentation methods were applied to CT images of the explanted prostheses (exvivo images). Noise reduction obtained by improved stick filter showed best results in terms of signal to noise ratio comparing to anisotropic diffusion filters. All segmentation methods applied to the best phase of in-vivo images allowed 3D bioprosthetic leaflets reconstruction. Explanted bioprostheses CT images were also processed and used as reference. Qualitative analysis revealed a good concordance between the in-vivo images and the bioprostheses alterations. Results from different methods were compared by means of volumetric criteria and discussed. A first approach for spatiotemporal visualization of 3D+T images of valve bioprosthesis has been proposed. Volume rendering and motion compensation techniques were applied to visualize different phases of CT data. Native valve was also considered. ECG-gated CT images of aortic bioprostheses need a preprocessing to reduce noise and artifacts in order to enhance prosthetic leaflets.     Competitions of magnetism and superconductivity in FeAs-based materials

    Using the numerical unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach, we study the ground state of a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. We observe the competition of a (0,π)(0, \pi) mode spin-density wave and the superconductivity as the doping concentration changes. There might be a small region in the electron-doping side where the magnetism and superconductivity coexist. The superconducting pairing is found to be spin singlet, orbital even, and mixed sxy_{xy} + dx2y2_{x^{2}-y^{2}} wave (even parity).Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    This article reviews the current status of spin dynamics in semiconductors which has achieved a lot of progress in the past years due to the fast growing field of semiconductor spintronics. The primary focus is the theoretical and experimental developments of spin relaxation and dephasing in both spin precession in time domain and spin diffusion and transport in spacial domain. A fully microscopic many-body investigation on spin dynamics based on the kinetic spin Bloch equation approach is reviewed comprehensively.Comment: a review article with 193 pages and 1103 references.     Epistatic Association Mapping in Homozygous Crop Cultivars

    The genetic dissection of complex traits plays a crucial role in crop breeding. However, genetic analysis and crop breeding have heretofore been performed separately. In this study, we designed a new approach that integrates epistatic association analysis in crop cultivars with breeding by design. First, we proposed an epistatic association mapping (EAM) approach in homozygous crop cultivars. The phenotypic values of complex traits, along with molecular marker information, were used to perform EAM. In our EAM, all the main-effect quantitative trait loci (QTLs), environmental effects, QTL-by-environment interactions and QTL-by-QTL interactions were included in a full model and estimated by empirical Bayes approach. A series of Monte Carlo simulations was performed to confirm the reliability of the new method. Next, the information from all detected QTLs was used to mine novel alleles for each locus and to design elite cross combination. Finally, the new approach was adopted to dissect the genetic basis of seed length in 215 soybean cultivars obtained, by stratified random sampling, from 6 geographic ecotypes in China. As a result, 19 main-effect QTLs and 3 epistatic QTLs were identified, more than 10 novel alleles were mined and 3 elite parental combinations, such as Daqingdou and Zhengzhou790034, were predicted

    Updating cut-off values of severity scoring systems for community-acquired pneumonia to orchestrate more predictive accuracy

    AbstractBackground: The assessment of severity is crucial in the management of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). It remains unknown whether updating cut-off values of severity scoring systems orchestrate improvement in predictive accuracy.Methods: 3,212 patients with CAP were recruited to two observational prospective cohort studies. Three bettered scoring systems were derived from the corresponding well-established and extensively used pneumonia-specific severity scoring systems, i.e. pneumonia severity index, minor criteria and CURB-65 (confusion, urea >7 mmol/L, respiratory rate ≥30/min, low blood pressure, and age ≥65 years) score, with the updating cut-off values for tachypnea and low blood pressure. Cronbach α was employed to determine construct validity. Discrimination was valued by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and net reclassification improvement (NRI).Results: Respiratory rate ≥22/min and systolic blood pressure ≤100 mm Hg were performed better than respiratory rate ≥30/min and hypotension for predicting mortality in the derivation cohort, respectively (AUROC, 0.823 vs 0.519, 0.688 vs 0.622; NRI, 0.61, 0.13). Bettered scoring systems orchestrated higher convergences, indicated by greater Cronbach α and more decrease in Cronbach α if the updating cut-off values were deleted. The six scoring systems agreed well with one another. Bettered- pneumonia severity index, minor criteria and CURB-65 score showed higher associations with severity and mortality rates and demonstrated greater predictive accuracies for mortality compared with the corresponding original systems (AUROC, 0.939 vs 0.883, 0.909 vs 0.871, 0.913 vs 0.859; NRI, 0.113, 0.076, 0.108; respectively). The validation cohort confirmed a similar pattern.Conclusions: Updating cut-off values of severity scoring systems for CAP orchestrate improvement in predictive accuracy, suggesting that it may facilitate the rationalization of clinical triage decision-making and further reduce mortality. The current studies provide the first known prospective evidence of potential benefit of the updating cut-off values of severity scoring systems for CAP in predictive accuracy.Key messagesUpdating cut-off values were performed better for predicting mortality.Bettered scoring systems orchestrated higher convergences.Bettered scoring systems demonstrated greater predictive accuracies for mortality

    Abstract Background Infectious Disease Society of America/American Thoracic Society (IDSA/ATS) minor criteria for severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) are of unequal weight in predicting mortality, but the major problem associated with IDSA/ATS minor criteria might be a lack of consideration of weight in prediction in clinical practice. Would awarding different points to the presences of the minor criteria improve the accuracy of the scoring system? It is warranted to explore this intriguing hypothesis. Methods A total of 1230 CAP patients were recruited to a retrospective cohort study. This was tested against a prospective two-center cohort of 1749 adults with CAP. 2 points were assigned for the presence of PaO2/FiO2 ≤ 250 mmHg, confusion, or uremia on admission and 1 point for each of the others. Results The mortality rates, and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) and pneumonia severity index (PSI) scores increased significantly with the numbers of IDSA/ATS minor criteria present and minor criteria scores. The correlations of the minor criteria scores with the mortality rates were higher than those of the numbers of IDSA/ATS minor criteria present. As were the correlations of the minor criteria scores with SOFA and PSI scores, compared with the numbers of IDSA/ATS minor criteria present. The pattern of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and Youden’s index of scored minor criteria of ≥2 scores or the presence of 2 or more IDSA/ATS minor criteria for prediction of mortality was the best in the retrospective cohort, and the former was better than the latter. The validation cohort confirmed a similar pattern. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of scored minor criteria was higher than that of IDSA/ATS minor criteria in the retrospective cohort, implying higher accuracy of scored version for predicting mortality. The validation cohort confirmed a similar paradigm. Conclusions Scored minor criteria orchestrated improvements in predicting mortality and severity in patients with CAP, and scored minor criteria of ≥2 scores or the presence of 2 or more IDSA/ATS minor criteria might be more valuable cut-off value for severe CAP, which might have implications for more accurate clinical triage decisions

    Neferine Protects Endothelial Glycocalyx via Mitochondrial ROS in Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

    Damage to the endothelial glycocalyx is a critical factor in increased pulmonary vascular permeability, which is the basic pathological feature of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Neferine (Nef), a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid isolated from green seed embryos of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn, has extensive pharmacological activity. In this study, we showed that Nef reduced lung-capillary permeability, down-regulated the production of cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10) and inhibited the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway in mice with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ARDS. Further analysis indicated that Nef provided protection against endothelial glycocalyx degradation in LPS-induced ARDS mice (in vivo) and in LPS-stimulated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (in vitro). The glycocalyx-protective effect of Nef may be initiated by suppressing the production of mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) and decreasing oxidative damage. Nef was also found to promote glycocalyx restoration by accelerating the removal of mtROS in endothelial cells in LPS-induced ARDS. These results suggested the potential of Nef as a therapeutic agent for ARDS associated with Gram-negative bacterial infections and elucidated the mechanisms underlying the protection and restoration of the endothelial glycocalyx

    Mortality among severe community-acquired pneumonia patients depends on combinations of 2007 IDSA/ATS minor criteria

    AbstractObjectivesThe individual 2007 Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA)/American Thoracic Society (ATS) minor criteria for severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) are of unequal weight in predicting mortality. It is not clear whether the combinations of predictive findings might imply diverse severities or different mortalities.MethodsA prospective two centre cohort study was performed of 385 severe CAP patients fulfilling three or more IDSA/ATS minor criteria amongst 1430 patients.ResultsHospital mortality rose sharply from 5.7%, 9.9%, and 16.5%, respectively, for patients with none of three predictive findings most strongly associated to mortality (PaO2/FiO2 ≤ 250mm Hg, confusion and uraemia), one of those, and two of those to 38.6% for patients with all those (p<0.001). The number of three predictive findings present had a significantly increased odds ratio for mortality of 2.796 (p<0.001), and had the degree of positive association with sequential organ failure assessment scores at 72hours, incurring significantly longer hospital stay and higher costs.ConclusionsDifferent combinations of 2007 IDSA/ATS minor criteria for severe CAP were associated to diverse severities and different mortalities. The combination of PaO2/FiO2 ≤ 250mm Hg, confusion and uraemia predicted more severity and higher mortality compared with others
