Axiomatic geometrical optics, Abraham-Minkowski controversy, and photon properties derived classically
By restating geometrical optics within the field-theoretical approach, the
classical concept of a photon (and, more generally, any elementary excitation)
in arbitrary dispersive medium is introduced, and photon properties are
calculated unambiguously. In particular, the canonical and kinetic momenta
carried by a photon, as well as the two corresponding energy-momentum tensors
of a wave, are derived from first principles of Lagrangian mechanics. As an
example application of this formalism, the Abraham-Minkowski controversy
pertaining to the definitions of these quantities is resolved for linear waves
of arbitrary nature, and corrections to the traditional formulas for the photon
kinetic energy-momentum are found. Several other applications of axiomatic
geometrical optics to electromagnetic waves are also presented
Quantum nondemolition measurement of mechanical motion quanta
The fields of opto- and electromechanics have facilitated numerous advances
in the areas of precision measurement and sensing, ultimately driving the
studies of mechanical systems into the quantum regime. To date, however, the
quantization of the mechanical motion and the associated quantum jumps between
phonon states remains elusive. For optomechanical systems, the coupling to the
environment was shown to preclude the detection of the mechanical mode
occupation, unless strong single photon optomechanical coupling is achieved.
Here, we propose and analyse an electromechanical setup, which allows to
overcome this limitation and resolve the energy levels of a mechanical
oscillator. We find that the heating of the membrane, caused by the interaction
with the environment and unwanted couplings, can be suppressed for carefully
designed electromechanical systems. The results suggest that phonon number
measurement is within reach for modern electromechanical setups.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures plus 24 pages, 11 figures supplemental materia
Rapid Assessment of Mineral Concentration in Meadow Grasses by Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy
A near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) method for rapid determination of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in diverse meadow grasses was developed with a view towards utilizing this material for biogas production and organic fertilizer. NIRS spectra between 12,000 cm−1 and 4,000 cm−1 were used. When validated on samples from different years to those used for the calibration set, the NIRS prediction of nitrogen was considered moderately useful with R2 = 0.77, ratio of standard error of prediction to reference data range (RER) of 9.32 and ratio of standard error of prediction to standard deviation of reference data (RPD) of 2.33. Prediction of potassium was less accurate, with R2 = 0.77, RER of 6.56 and RPD of 1.45, whilst prediction of phosphorous was not considered accurate enough to be of any practical use. This work is of interest from the point of view of both the removal of excess nutrients from formerly intensively farmed areas and also for assessing the plant biomass suitability for conversion into carbon neutral energy through biogas production

Effect of remote ischaemic conditioning on infarct size and remodelling in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients: the CONDI-2/ERIC-PPCI CMR substudy
The effect of limb remote ischaemic conditioning (RIC) on myocardial infarct (MI) size and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was investigated in a pre-planned cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) substudy of the CONDI-2/ERIC-PPCI trial. This single-blind multi-centre trial (7 sites in UK and Denmark) included 169 ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients who were already randomised to either control (n = 89) or limb RIC (n = 80) (4 × 5 min cycles of arm cuff inflations/deflations) prior to primary percutaneous coronary intervention. CMR was performed acutely and at 6 months. The primary endpoint was MI size on the 6 month CMR scan, expressed as median and interquartile range. In 110 patients with 6-month CMR data, limb RIC did not reduce MI size [RIC: 13.0 (5.1–17.1)% of LV mass; control: 11.1 (7.0–17.8)% of LV mass, P = 0.39], or LVEF, when compared to control. In 162 patients with acute CMR data, limb RIC had no effect on acute MI size, microvascular obstruction and LVEF when compared to control. In a subgroup of anterior STEMI patients, RIC was associated with lower incidence of microvascular obstruction and higher LVEF on the acute scan when compared with control, but this was not associated with an improvement in LVEF at 6 months. In summary, in this pre-planned CMR substudy of the CONDI-2/ERIC-PPCI trial, there was no evidence that limb RIC reduced MI size or improved LVEF at 6 months by CMR, findings which are consistent with the neutral effects of limb RIC on clinical outcomes reported in the main CONDI-2/ERIC-PPCI trial

Strategic Technology Switching under Risk Aversion and Uncertainty
Firms devising green investment strategies within a deregulated environment must take into account not only economic and technological uncertainty, but also strategic interactions due to competition. Also, further complicating green investment decisions is the fact that firms are likely to exhibit risk aversion, since alternative energy technologies entail risk that cannot be diversified. Therefore, we develop a utility-based, real options framework for pre-emptive and non-pre-emptive competition in order to analyse how economic and technological uncertainty interact with risk aversion to impact the adoption of an existing technology in the light of uncertainty over the arrival of an improved version. We confirm that greater risk aversion delays investment and show that technological uncertainty accelerates the follower’s entry, delays the entry of the pre-emptive leader, and, intriguingly, does not affect the non-pre-emptive leader’s investment decision. Also, we show how the relative loss in the leader’s value due to the follower’s entry is affected by economic and technological uncertainty as well as risk aversion, and how the risk of pre-emption under increasing economic uncertainty raises the value of direct investment in the new technology relative to stepwise investment
Hydrogenation properties of lithium and sodium hydride – closo-borate, [B10H10]2− and [B12H12]2−, composites
© 2018 the Owner Societies. The hydrogen absorption properties of metal closo-borate/metal hydride composites, M2B10H10-8MH and M2B12H12-10MH, M = Li or Na, are studied under high hydrogen pressures to understand the formation mechanism of metal borohydrides. The hydrogen storage properties of the composites have been investigated by in situ synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction at p(H2) = 400 bar and by ex situ hydrogen absorption measurements at p(H2) = 526 to 998 bar. The in situ experiments reveal the formation of crystalline intermediates before metal borohydrides (MBH4) are formed. On the contrary, the M2B12H12-10MH (M = Li and Na) systems show no formation of the metal borohydride at T = 400 °C and p(H2) = 537 to 970 bar.11B MAS NMR of the M2B10H10-8MH composites reveal that the molar ratio of LiBH4or NaBH4and the remaining B species is 1:0.63 and 1:0.21, respectively. Solution and solid-state11B NMR spectra reveal new intermediates with a B:H ratio close to 1:1. Our results indicate that the M2B10H10(M = Li, Na) salts display a higher reactivity towards hydrogen in the presence of metal hydrides compared to the corresponding [B12H12]2-composites, which represents an important step towards understanding the factors that determine the stability and reversibility of high hydrogen capacity metal borohydrides for hydrogen storage
Deliquescence of NaCl–NaNO(3), KNO(3)–NaNO(3), and NaCl–KNO(3 )salt mixtures from 90 to 120°C
We conducted reversed deliquescence experiments in saturated NaCl–NaNO(3)–H(2)O, KNO(3)–NaNO(3)–H(2)O, and NaCl–KNO(3)–H(2)O systems from 90 to 120°C as a function of relative humidity and solution composition. NaCl, NaNO(3), and KNO(3 )represent members of dust salt assemblages that are likely to deliquesce and form concentrated brines on high-level radioactive waste package surfaces in a repository environment at Yucca Mountain, NV. Discrepancy between model prediction and experiment can be as high as 8% for relative humidity and 50% for dissolved ion concentration. The discrepancy is attributed primarily to the use of 25°C models for Cl–NO(3 )and K–NO(3 )ion interactions in the current Yucca Mountain Project high-temperature Pitzer model to describe the nonideal behavior of these highly concentrated solutions

Source at http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/s12888-017-1345-8 Background: The duration of untreated psychosis is determined by both patient and service related factors.
Few studies have considered the geographical accessibility of services in relation to treatment delay in early
psychosis. To address this, we investigated whether treatment delay is co-determined by straight-line distance
to hospital based specialist services in a mainly rural mental health context.
Methods: A naturalistic cross-sectional study was conducted among a sample of recent onset psychosis patients
in northern Norway (n = 62). Data on patient and service related determinants were analysed.
Results: Half of the cohort had a treatment delay longer than 4.5 months. In a binary logistic regression model,
straight-line distance was found to make an independent contribution to delay in which we controlled for other
known risk factors.
Conclusions: The determinants of treatment delay are complex. This study adds to previous studies on treatment
delay by showing that the spatial location of services also makes an independent contribution. In addition, it may
be that insidious onset is a more important factor in treatment delay in remote areas, as the logistical implications of
specialist referral are much greater than for urban dwellers. The threshold for making a diagnosis in a remote location
may therefore be higher. Strategies to reduce the duration of untreated psychosis in rural areas would benefit from
improving appropriate referral by crisis services, and the detection of insidious onset of psychosis in community based
specialist services
Active microrheology and simultaneous visualization of sheared phospholipid monolayers
Two-dimensional films of surface-active agents—from phospholipids and proteins to nanoparticles and colloids—stabilize fluid interfaces, which are essential to the science, technology and engineering of everyday life. The 2D nature of interfaces present unique challenges and opportunities: coupling between the 2D films and the bulk fluids complicates the measurement of surface dynamic properties, but allows the interfacial microstructure to be directly visualized during deformation. Here we present a novel technique that combines active microrheology with fluorescence microscopy to visualize fluid interfaces as they deform under applied stress, allowing structure and rheology to be correlated on the micron-scale in monolayer films. We show that even simple, single-component lipid monolayers can exhibit viscoelasticity, history dependence, a yield stress and hours-long time scales for elastic recoil and aging. Simultaneous visualization of the monolayer under stress shows that the rich dynamical response results from the cooperative dynamics and deformation of liquid-crystalline domains and their boundaries
