    Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon genomes from East England reveal British migration history

    British population history has been shaped by a series of immigrations, including the early Anglo-Saxon migrations after 400 CE. It remains an open question how these events affected the genetic composition of the current British population. Here, we present whole-genome sequences from 10 individuals excavated close to Cambridge in the East of England, ranging from the late Iron Age to the middle Anglo-Saxon period. By analysing shared rare variants with hundreds of modern samples from Britain and Europe, we estimate that on average the contemporary East English population derives 38% of its ancestry from Anglo-Saxon migrations. We gain further insight with a new method, rarecoal, which infers population history and identifies fine-scale genetic ancestry from rare variants. Using rarecoal we find that the Anglo-Saxon samples are closely related to modern Dutch and Danish populations, while the Iron Age samples share ancestors with multiple Northern European populations including Britain

    ‘Sons of athelings given to the earth’: Infant Mortality within Anglo-Saxon Mortuary Geography

    FOR 20 OR MORE YEARS early Anglo-Saxon archaeologists have believed children are underrepresented in the cemetery evidence. They conclude that excavation misses small bones, that previous attitudes to reporting overlook the very young, or that infants and children were buried elsewhere. This is all well and good, but we must be careful of oversimplifying compound social and cultural responses to childhood and infant mortality. Previous approaches have offered methodological quandaries in the face of this under-representation. However, proportionally more infants were placed in large cemeteries and sometimes in specific zones. This trend is statistically significant and is therefore unlikely to result entirely from preservation or excavation problems. Early medieval cemeteries were part of regional mortuary geographies and provided places to stage events that promoted social cohesion across kinship systems extending over tribal territories. This paper argues that patterns in early Anglo-Saxon infant burial were the result of female mobility. Many women probably travelled locally to marry in a union which reinforced existing social networks. For an expectant mother, however, the safest place to give birth was with experience women in her maternal home. Infant identities were affected by personal and legal association with their mother’s parental kindred, so when an infant died in childbirth or months and years later, it was their mother’s identity which dictated burial location. As a result, cemeteries central to tribal identities became places to bury the sons and daughters of a regional tribal aristocracy

    Assessing the reliability of virtual reconstruction of mandibles

    OBJECTIVES: Mandibular morphological variation is often used to examine various aspects of human palaeobiology. However, fossil and archeological skeletal remains are often fragmented/distorted and so are frequently excluded from studies. This leads to decreased sample sizes and, potentially, to biased results. Thus, it is of interest to restore the original anatomy of incomplete/distorted specimens. Thin plate splines (TPS), commonly used in Geometric Morphometrics (GM), offer the prospect of reconstruction of missing parts and particularly of interest here, missing landmarks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, the reliability of TPS based mandibular reconstruction is tested. To that end missing landmarks were simulated in originally complete hemimandibles. TPS was then used to restore the location of simulated missing data and the predicted landmarks were compared to the original ones. RESULTS: Results show that error varies according to the number and location of estimated landmarks. Notwithstanding, estimation error is usually considerably smaller than the morphological differences between individuals from the same species. DISCUSSION: TPS based reconstruction allows fragmentary mandibles to be used in studies of whole mandibular variation, provided the above mentioned caveats are considered

    The landscape of a Swedish boat-grave cemetery

We argue that the landscape context was integral to the performance of the funerary ceremonies and the subsequent monumental presence of the dead in the landscape. We offer a way to move beyond monocausal explanations for burial location based on single-scale analyses. Instead, we suggest that boat-inhumation at Skamby was a commemorative strategy that operated on multiple scales and drew its significance from multiple landscape attributes.British Academ

    The Diagnosis and Context of a Facial Deformity from an Anglo-Saxon Cemetery at Spofforth, North Yorkshire

    An individual aged between 6 and 7years at death from a 7th to 9th century cemetery at Village Farm, Spofforth, North Yorkshire, presented significant pathological swelling to the left facial bones. The ectocranial surface was bulbous and uneven, and the expanded diploë was densely packed with a mass of thick trabeculae. Radiographic and histological analysis, in combination with the macroscopically observed pathological changes, supported the differential diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia. The skeletal changes to the left face and jaw would have resulted in a significant facial deformity. Examples of individuals with physical impairments or disfigurements from Anglo-Saxon cemeteries are rare. Nevertheless, it seems that a significant proportion are afforded unusual burial practices more often associated with deviancy, for example, at the edge of cemeteries or on a reversed orientation, seemingly indicating that their diminished physical capabilities or altered physical appearance had a detrimental effect on their social status. The child from Spofforth was, however, buried in a normative manner, extended, supine and in a plain earth-cut grave, with no indication that their facial deformity had prompted unusual funerary provision. This example of facial disfigurement contributes to a growing corpus of potentially disabled individuals from early medieval England. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

    Identidades y ajuares en las necrópolis altomedievales. Estudios isotópicos del cementerio de San Martín de Dulantzi, Álava (siglos VI-X)

    This paper presents the results of the isotopic studies made on the anthropological remains recovered in the archaeological excavation of the early medieval site of San Martín of Dulantzi (Alegría–Dulantzi, Álava), carried out by the archaeological company Iterbide. The discovery of a series of tombs dating in the 6th and 7th centuries inside a church, some of them containing grave goods, has enabled the analysis, in critical terms, of the status, the eating patterns and the mobility of these individuals through the analysis of the isotopes and the funerary rites. Specifically, it has been possible to observe that it is a local society, with a scarce impact of immigrants, and the personal ornaments constitute a social status marker inside a community with homogeneous lifestyle. Likewise, these results are discussed in the context of other studies conducted at several European sites of the same chronology.En este artículo se presentan los resultados de los estudios isotópicos realizados sobre los restos antropológicos recuperados en la intervención arqueológica de carácter preventivo realizada en el yacimiento altomedieval de San Martín de Dulantzi (Alegría- Dulantzi, Álava) por parte de la empresa Iterbide. El hallazgo de una serie de tumbas fechadas en los siglos VI y VII en el interior de una iglesia, algunas de las cuales dotadas de objetos de adorno personal, ha permitido analizar en términos críticos el estatus, los patrones alimentarios y la movilidad de estos individuos a partir del análisis de los isotopos y de los rituales funerarios. Más concretamente se ha podido observar que se trata de una sociedad local, con una escasa incidencia de inmigrantes, y que los objetos de adorno personal constituyen un marcador de estatus social en el seno de una comunidad que presenta niveles de vida homogéneos. Asimismo se discuten estos resultados en relación con otras fases de ocupación del yacimiento y en el contexto de otros estudios realizados en varios yacimientos europeos coetáneos
