    Interaction between a verbal working memory network and the medial temporal lobe

    The irrelevant speech effect illustrates that sounds that are irrelevant to a visually presented short-term memory task still interfere with neuronal function. In the present study we explore the functional and effective connectivity of such interference. The functional connectivity analysis suggested an interaction between the level of irrelevant speech and the correlation between in particular the left superior temporal region, associated with verbal working memory, and the left medial temporal lobe. Based on this psycho-physiological interaction, and to broaden the understanding of this result, we performed a network analysis, using a simple network model for verbal working memory, to analyze its interaction with the medial temporal lobe memory system. The results showed dissociations in terms of network interactions between frontal as well as parietal and temporal areas in relation to the medial temporal lobe. The results of the present study suggest that a transition from phonological loop processing towards an engagement of episodic processing might take place during the processing of interfering irrelevant sounds. We speculate that, in response to the irrelevant sounds, this reflects a dynamic shift in processing as suggested by a closer interaction between a verbal working memory system and the medial temporal lobe memory system.     Improving the method of solar radiation durability determination of cable products

    The authors suggest an extra physic-mechanical procedure to determine durability of cable goods to solar radiation exposure. The test check was carried out using the standard and the proposed procedures. The results of two tests were compared and analyzed. The use of the proposed technique allows improving the validity and reliability of the laboratory experiment conducted in a real production environment and exclude the low-quality cable items. The only disadvantage of the proposed technique is its labor intensiveness

    Meaning of Life in Secondary Abstainers from Alcohol (Abstain From Alcohol and Meaning of Life)

    Aim: Alcoholism is a major public health problem, and it has not yet been clarified which are the factors that influence the relapse of the disease. Aim of this research is to examine whether there is a connection between meaning of life in secondary abstainers from alcohol and variables (demographic, alcohol consumption and severity of addiction before abstinence) and to determine which variables are predictors of the meaning of life in secundary abstainers. Subjects and methods: The research was conducted in 2019 and 2020 at the County Hospital of Požega, at the Department of Neurology, Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology. 113 adults participated in this research who were diagnosed with alcohol addiction and are currently abstaining from alcohol. Results: Meaning of life in the examined addicts in abstinence is low positively related to the length of abstinence (p = 0.030), low negative with the number of hospitalizations due to alcohol addiction (p = 0.013), moderately negative with the severity of alcohol addiction before abstinence (p < 0.001) and moderately positive with financial status (p < 0.001). Hierarchical regression analysis showed that beeing unmerried (p = 0.021), financial status (p < 0.001) and severity of addiction (p < 0.001) are significant predictors of the meaning of life among abstainers from alcohol. Conclusion: It has been shown that alcoholism affects the meaning of life for alcohol addicts, and that it should be considered at the beginning and during the treatment of alcohol addicts

    Time course study of long-term biocompatibility and foreign body reaction to intraneural polyimide-based implants

    The foreign body reaction (FBR) against an implanted device is characterized by the formation of a fibrotic tissue around the implant. In the case of interfaces for peripheral nerves, used to stimulate specific group of axons and to record different nerve signals, the FBR induces a matrix deposition around the implant creating a physical separation between nerve fibers and the interface that may reduce its functionality over time. In order to understand how the FBR to intraneural interfaces evolves, polyimide non-functional devices were implanted in rat peripheral nerve. Functional tests (electrophysiological, pain and locomotion) and histological evaluation demonstrated that implanted devices did not cause any alteration in nerve function, in myelinated axons or in nerve architecture. The inflammatory response due to the surgical implantation decreased after 2 weeks. In contrast, inflammation was higher and more prolonged in the device implanted nerves with a peak after 2 weeks. With regard to tissue deposition, a tissue capsule appeared soon around the devices, acquiring maximal thickness at 2 weeks and being remodeled subsequently. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed two different cell types implicated in the FBR in the nerve: macrophages as the first cells in contact with the interface and fibroblasts that appear later at the edge of the capsule. Our results describe how the FBR against a polyimide implant in the peripheral nerve occurs and which are the main cellular players. Increasing knowledge of these responses will help to improve strategies to decrease the FBR against intraneural implants and to extend their usability

    Photocrosslinkable gelatin hydrogels modulate the production of the major pro-inflammatory cytokine, TNF-α, by human mononuclear cells

    Hydrogels are an attractive class of biomaterials in tissue engineering due to their inherently compatible properties for cell culture. Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) has shown significant promise in the fields of tissue engineering and drug delivery, as its physical properties can be precisely tuned depending on the specific application. There is a growing appreciation for the interaction between biomaterials and cells of the immune system with the increasing usage of biomaterials for in vivo applications. Here, we addressed the current lack of information regarding the immunogenicity of photocrosslinked GelMA. We investigated the ability of human mononuclear cells to mount inflammatory responses in the context of a GelMA hydrogel platform. Using lipopolysaccharide to stimulate a pro-inflammatory immune response, we found tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression was suppressed in GelMA culture conditions. Our findings have important implications on the future use of GelMA and highlight the significance of investigating the potential immune-modulatory properties of biomaterials
