Big data analyses reveal patterns and drivers of the movements of southern elephant seals
The growing number of large databases of animal tracking provides an
opportunity for analyses of movement patterns at the scales of populations and
even species. We used analytical approaches, developed to cope with big data,
that require no a priori assumptions about the behaviour of the target agents,
to analyse a pooled tracking dataset of 272 elephant seals (Mirounga leonina)
in the Southern Ocean, that was comprised of >500,000 location estimates
collected over more than a decade. Our analyses showed that the displacements
of these seals were described by a truncated power law distribution across
several spatial and temporal scales, with a clear signature of directed
movement. This pattern was evident when analysing the aggregated tracks despite
a wide diversity of individual trajectories. We also identified marine
provinces that described the migratory and foraging habitats of these seals.
Our analysis provides evidence for the presence of intrinsic drivers of
movement, such as memory, that cannot be detected using common models of
movement behaviour. These results highlight the potential for big data
techniques to provide new insights into movement behaviour when applied to

Physical activity and leisure habits and relation with Ruffier index in adolescents
El objetivo del estudio fue medir y correlacionar la práctica de actividad física y con el Índice de Ruffier (IR) en adolescentes. A un total de 884 alumnos (edad=16,4±0,8 años) se les midió la actividad física con la Versión modificada del Assessment of Physical Activity Level Questionnaire (APALQ) y se evaluó la capacidad de adaptación al esfuerzo mediante el Test Ruffier. La media del Índice de Ruffier fue 11,1±4,6 y el Índice de actividad física (IAF) 13,8±4,4. Las relaciones entre IAF y el IR, y entre horas de ocio sedentario e IR resultaron ser significativas aunque débiles (r=-0,31; p=0,000). En el IR los chicos presentaron valores superiores (t= -8,78; p= 0,000) a las chicas. También destinan más tiempo a la práctica de AF y estas diferencias fueron significativas en AF reglada y no reglada y en participación en competición

A replication study confirms the association of TNFSF4 (OX40L) polymorphisms with systemic sclerosis in a large European cohort
<p><b>Objectives</b> The aim of this study was to confirm the influence of TNFSF4 polymorphisms on systemic sclerosis (SSc) susceptibility and phenotypic features.</p>
<p><b>Methods</b> A total of 8 European populations of Caucasian ancestry were included, comprising 3014 patients with SSc and 3125 healthy controls. Four genetic variants of TNFSF4 gene promoter (rs1234314, rs844644, rs844648 and rs12039904) were selected as genetic markers.</p>
<p><b>Results</b> A pooled analysis revealed the association of rs1234314 and rs12039904 polymorphisms with SSc (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.31; OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.29, respectively). Significant association of the four tested variants with patients with limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc) was revealed (rs1234314 OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.38; rs844644 OR 0.91, 95% CI 0.83 to 0.99; rs844648 OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.20 and rs12039904 OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.33). Association of rs1234314, rs844648 and rs12039904 minor alleles with patients positive for anti-centromere antibodies (ACA) remained significant (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.37; OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.25; OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.38, respectively). Haplotype analysis confirmed a protective haplotype associated with SSc, lcSSc and ACA positive subgroups (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.82 to 0.96; OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.80 to 0.96; OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.77 to 0.97, respectively) and revealed a new risk haplotype associated with the same groups of patients (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.26; OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.35; OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.42, respectively).</p>
<p><b>Conclusions</b> The data confirm the influence of TNFSF4 polymorphisms in SSc genetic susceptibility, especially in subsets of patients positive for lcSSc and ACA.</p>

Evaluation of a program for updating recommendations about hand hygiene
Introducción. La higiene de manos (HM) es la medida más importante para prevenir las infecciones nosocomiales. El objetivo es evaluar el programa de actualización de las recomendaciones sobre HM implantado. Material y métodos. Intervenciones: marzo-octubre/2005 se realizaron sesiones de actualización sobre cuándo y cómo realizar la HM y mayo/2006 se repartió un tríptico explicativo a todos los trabajadores informando del grado de cumplimiento de las recomendaciones. Indicadores: nivel conocimientos (NC) medido con un cuestionario de cinco preguntas que se pasaba antes y después de las sesiones y se consideró respuesta inadecuada cuando se fallaban tres o más preguntas; el consumo soluciones alcohólicas (CSA) en ml/estancia agrupado en semestres desde 2004-2006; el grado cumplimiento de recomendaciones (GCR) sobre la HM medida por observación directa en dos momentos (diciembre/2005-febrero/2006 y octubre-noviembre/2006) y la prevalencia de infecciones nosocomiales (PI) y de pacientes con infección nosocomial (PPI) a partir estudios EPINE 2004-2005-2006. Resultados. La frecuencia de respuestas inadecuadas para evaluar NC pasó de un 57,5% antes a 18,9% después (p<0,001). El CSA para HM pasó de 3 ml/estancia en 2º semestre/2004 a 17 ml/estancia en 2º semestre/2006 (p<0,001). El GCR ha pasado del 31,0% al 55,6% (p<0,001). La PI y PPI han pasado del 11,4% y el 9,6% respectivamente en el 2004 al 9,4% y 8,9% en 2006 (N.S.). Conclusión. El programa está consiguiendo de manera progresiva sus objetivos ya que los tres indicadores de proceso (NC, CSA, GC) han mejorado de manera estadísticamente significativa, y los de resultado (PI y PPI) han mejorado aunque sin significación estadística.Background. Hand Hygiene (HH) is the most important measure in the prevention of nosocomial infections. The objective was to evaluate the program for updating recommendations on HH that had been introduced. Methods. Interventions: between March-October/2005 realisation of updating sessions about when and how to realize HH and May/2006 distribution of an explicative three-part document to all healthcare workers reporting on compliance with the recommendations. Indicators: level of knowledge (LK) measured with a questionnaire of five questions that was given to those attending before and after sessions, responses were considered inadequate when three or more questions were not answered; consumption of alcoholic solutions (CAS) on ml/stay grouped into semesters from 2004-2006; compliance (CO) with recommendations on HH was measured by direct observation at two times (December/2005-February/2006 and October-November/2006); and infections prevalence (IP) and patients with infection (IPP) for EPINE studies 2004-2005-2006. Results. The frequency of inadequate answers for evaluating LK has fallen from 57,5% before to 18,9% afterwards (p <0.001). The CAS for HH has passed from 3 ml/stay in 2nd semester/2004 to 17 ml/stay 2nd semester/2006 (p <0.001). The CO with HH has risen from 31,0% to 55,6% (p <0.001). The IP and IPP have risen respectively from 11,4% and 9,6% in 2004 to 9,4% and 8,9% in 2006 (N.S.). Conclusion. Opinion dynamics: models, extensions and external effects
Recently, social phenomena have received a lot of attention not only from
social scientists, but also from physicists, mathematicians and computer
scientists, in the emerging interdisciplinary field of complex system science.
Opinion dynamics is one of the processes studied, since opinions are the
drivers of human behaviour, and play a crucial role in many global challenges
that our complex world and societies are facing: global financial crises,
global pandemics, growth of cities, urbanisation and migration patterns, and
last but not least important, climate change and environmental sustainability
and protection. Opinion formation is a complex process affected by the
interplay of different elements, including the individual predisposition, the
influence of positive and negative peer interaction (social networks playing a
crucial role in this respect), the information each individual is exposed to,
and many others. Several models inspired from those in use in physics have been
developed to encompass many of these elements, and to allow for the
identification of the mechanisms involved in the opinion formation process and
the understanding of their role, with the practical aim of simulating opinion
formation and spreading under various conditions. These modelling schemes range
from binary simple models such as the voter model, to multi-dimensional
continuous approaches. Here, we provide a review of recent methods, focusing on
models employing both peer interaction and external information, and
emphasising the role that less studied mechanisms, such as disagreement, has in

A randomized phase II clinical trial of dendritic cell vaccination following complete resection of colon cancer liver metastasis
Surgically resectable synchronic and metachronic liver metastases of colon cancer have high risk of relapse in spite
of standard-of-care neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy regimens. Dendritic cell vaccines loaded with autologous
tumor lysates were tested for their potential to avoid or delay disease relapses (NCT01348256). Patients with surgically
amenable liver metastasis of colon adenocarcinoma (n = 19) were included and underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy,
surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. Fifteen patients with disease-free resection margins were randomized 1:1 to receive
two courses of four daily doses of dendritic cell intradermal vaccinations versus observation. The trial had been originally
designed to include 56 patients but was curtailed due to budgetary restrictions. Follow-up of the patients indicates a
clear tendency to fewer and later relapses in the vaccine arm (median disease free survival –DFS-) 25.26 months, 95% CI 8.

A genome-wide association study follow-up suggests a possible role for PPARG in systemic sclerosis susceptibility
Introduction:
A recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) comprising a French cohort of systemic sclerosis (SSc) reported several non-HLA single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showing a nominal association in the discovery phase. We aimed to identify previously overlooked susceptibility variants by using a follow-up strategy.<p></p>
Methods:
Sixty-six non-HLA SNPs showing a P value <10-4 in the discovery phase of the French SSc GWAS were analyzed in the first step of this study, performing a meta-analysis that combined data from the two published SSc GWASs. A total of 2,921 SSc patients and 6,963 healthy controls were included in this first phase. Two SNPs, PPARG rs310746 and CHRNA9 rs6832151, were selected for genotyping in the replication cohort (1,068 SSc patients and 6,762 healthy controls) based on the results of the first step. Genotyping was performed by using TaqMan SNP genotyping assays.
Results:
We observed nominal associations for both PPARG rs310746 (PMH = 1.90 × 10-6, OR, 1.28) and CHRNA9 rs6832151 (PMH = 4.30 × 10-6, OR, 1.17) genetic variants with SSc in the first step of our study. In the replication phase, we observed a trend of association for PPARG rs310746 (P value = 0.066; OR, 1.17). The combined overall Mantel-Haenszel meta-analysis of all the cohorts included in the present study revealed that PPARG rs310746 remained associated with SSc with a nominal non-genome-wide significant P value (PMH = 5.00 × 10-7; OR, 1.25). No evidence of association was observed for CHRNA9 rs6832151 either in the replication phase or in the overall pooled analysis.<p></p>
Conclusion:
Our results suggest a role of PPARG gene in the development of SSc
Genotype, environment and their interaction on olive
Resumen del trabajo presentado en la 6th International Conference on the Olive Tree and Olive Products, celebrada en Sevilla (España) del 15 al 19 de octubre de 2018.The wide olive genetic patrimony has revealed high variability for most of the agronomic and oil quality traits of interest in olive growing. Few studies, however, have addressed the interaction of this variability with the environment, a subject of particular interest considering the natural high instability of the Mediterranean climate and the challenge of the predicted climate change. The current work presents results on the interaction between genotype and environment from
multi-environment trials of olive cultivars and breeding selections, planted in different edaphoclimatic conditions of Andalusia, Southern Peninsular Spain and Canary Islands. For most of the agronomic and oil quality characters evaluated (flowering phenology, flower quality, pattern of oil accumulation, fatty acid composition and phenol content and composition), significant genotype and environment effects have been observed. For example, olive cultivars grown in Tenerife under much milder winter temperatures than in the Iberian Peninsula showed substantially earlierflowering and oil accumulation. Only in the case of flowering phenology was no significant genotype effect found. Furthermore, a strong genotype x environment effect was highly consistent in all characters considered. Regarding resistance to disease, such as Verticillium wilt, the variability of results from both natural and artificial inoculations also tends to indicate a considerable environmental effect and the need for careful testing of disease evolution. All this information strongly suggests the necessity of comparative trials of olive cultivars for both adequate choice of cultivar and final selection in breeding programs
