The Extended Power Law as Intrinsic Signature For a Black Hole
We analyze the exact general relativistic exact integro-differential equation
of radiative transfer describing the interaction of low energy photons with a
Maxwellian distribution of hot electrons in gravitational field of a
Schwarzschild black hole. We prove that due to Comptonization an initial
arbitrary spectrum of low energy photons unavoidably results in spectra
characterized by an extended power-law feature. We examine the spectral index
by using both analytical and numerical methods for a variety of physical
parameters as such the plasma temperature and the mass accretion rate. The
presence of the event horizon as well as the behaviour of the null geodesics in
its vicinity largely determine the dependence of the spectral index on the flow
parameters. We come to the conclusion that the bulk motion of a converging flow
is more efficient in upscattering photons than thermal Comptonization provided
that the electron temperature in the flow is of order of a few keV or less. In
this case, the spectrum observed at infinity consists of a soft component
produced by those input photons that escape after a few scatterings without any
significant energy change and of hard component (described by a power law)
produced by the photons that underwent significant upscattering. The luminosity
of the power-law component is relatively small compared to that of the soft
component. For accretion into black hole the spectral energy index of the
power-law is always higher than one for plasma temperature of order of a few
keV. This result suggests that the bulk motion Comptonization might be

The converging inflow spectrum is an intrinsic signature for a black hole: Monte-Carlo simulations of Comptonization on free-falling electrons
An accreting black hole is, by definition, characterized by the drain.
Namely, the matter falls into a black hole much the same way as water
disappears down a drain - matter goes in and nothing comes out. As this can
only happen in a black hole, it provides an unique way to see it. The accretion
proceeds almost in free fall close to the black hole horizon. In this paper we
calculate (by using Monte -Carlo simulations) the specific features of X-ray
spectra formed as a result of upscattering of the soft (disk) photons in the
converging inflow (CI) within about 3 Schwarzschild radii of the black hole.
The full relativistic treatment has been implemented to reproduce these
spectra. We show that spectra in the soft state of black hole systems can be
described as the sum of a thermal (disk) component and the convolution of some
fraction of this component with the CI upscattering spread function. The latter
boosted photon component is seen as an extended power-law at energies much
higher than the characteristic soft photons energy. We demonstrate the
stability of the power spectral index (alpha= 1.8) over a wide range of the
plasma temperature 0-10 keV and mass accretion rates (higher than 2 in
Eddington units). We also demonstrate that the sharp high energy cutoff occurs
at energies of 200-400 keV which are related to the average rest energy of
electrons impinging upon the horizon. The spectrum is practically identical to
the standard thermal Comptonization spectrum when the CI plasma temperature is
getting of order of 50 keV (hard state of BHS). Also, the change of spectral
shapes from the soft to the hard X-ray state is clearly to be related with the
temperature of the bulk flow. These Monte-Carlo simulated CI spectra are then a

Integrated Management Strategies for Phytophthora sojae Combining Host Resistance and Seed Treatments
Phytophthora sojae has re-emerged as a serious soybean pathogen in the past decade. This may be due in part to changes in resistance levels in current cultivars, adoption of P. sojae populations to deployed Rps genes, and highly favorable environments in the past decade. This multilocation study evaluated the effect of seed treatments on the incidence and severity of Phytophthora root and stem rot on soybeans with different combinations of Rps genes and levels of partial resistance. The efficacy of the seed treatments was highly variable across locations. Seed treatments (metalaxyl and mefenoxam) provided protection and increased yields across cultivars in locations where rain or irrigation occurred shortly after planting (Ohio, South Dakota, and Ontario). However, there were no significant differences in stand or yield consistently across cultivars in Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, or Ohio, where heavy precipitation did not occur until later growth stages. The environment, levels of inoculum, and pathogen complex may have played a role in the different responses to the seed treatments and to the different combinations of Rps genes and levels of partial resistance to P. sojae in the cultivars. Fields that are poorly drained and have P. sojae populations with complex pathotypes may benefit the most from seed treatments. Individual fields where producers may see the greatest benefit to utilizing these integrated management strategies will need to be identified
(Il)Legitimisation of the role of the nation state: Understanding of and reactions to Internet censorship in Turkey
This study aims to explore Turkish citizen-consumers' understanding of and reactions to censorship of websites in Turkey by using in-depth interviews and online ethnography. In an environment where sites such as YouTube and others are increasingly being banned, the citizen-consumers' macro-level understanding is that such censorship is part of a wider ideological plan and their micro-level understanding is that their relationship with the wider global network is reduced, in the sense that they have trouble accessing full information on products, services and experiences. The study revealed that citizen-consumers engage in two types of resistance strategies against such domination by the state: using irony as passive resistance, and using the very same technology used by the state to resist its domination
The missing pieces for better future predictions in subarctic ecosystems: a Torneträsk case study
Arctic and subarctic ecosystems are experiencing substantial changes in hydrology, vegetation, permafrost conditions, and carbon cycling, in response to climatic change and other anthropogenic drivers, and these changes are likely to continue over this century. The total magnitude of these changes results from multiple interactions among these drivers. Field measurements can address the overall responses to different changing drivers, but are less capable of quantifying the interactions among them. Currently, a comprehensive assessment of the drivers of ecosystem changes, and the magnitude of their direct and indirect impacts on subarctic ecosystems, is missing. The Torneträsk area, in the Swedish subarctic, has an unrivalled history of environmental observation over 100 years, and is one of the most studied sites in the Arctic. In this study, we summarize and rank the drivers of ecosystem change in the Torneträsk area, and propose research priorities identified, by expert assessment, to improve predictions of ecosystem changes. The research priorities identified include understanding impacts on ecosystems brought on by altered frequency and intensity of winter warming events, evapotranspiration rates, rainfall, duration of snow cover and lake-ice, changed soil moisture, and droughts. This case study can help us understand the ongoing ecosystem changes occurring in the Torneträsk area, and contribute to improve predictions of future ecosystem changes at a larger scale. This understanding will provide the basis for the future mitigation and adaptation plans needed in a changing climate
Culinary communication practices:The role of retail spaces in producing field-specific cultural capital
Purpose: This chapter explores the practices underpinning the production of field-specific cultural capital at festivals, understood here as retail spaces that gather a plethora of distinct market actors. Methodology/Approach: This research presents evidence from an ethnographic study employing an interpretative paradigm and multiple data collection processes. The empirical research has been undertaken in the context of food festivals associated with the foodie taste regime. Findings: Three categories of practices that play a role in the production of field-specific cultural capital, namely representational, exchange, and experiential practices, are presented. Practical Implications: Our chapter provides recommendations for food festival organizers and participants who need to improve their practices when facing challenges such as increasing international competition and costs or declining sponsorship. Research Limitations/Implications: This chapter contributes to the growing body of field-level market analysis by showing how practices enabled by complex retail spaces contribute to the production of field-specific cultural capital. However, this chapter is limited by its focus on food festivals. Originality/Value of the Paper: This chapter theorizes how practices enable the acceleration and diversification of field-specific capital exchange, as well as its integration with other forms of capital
Effects of alirocumab on types of myocardial infarction: insights from the ODYSSEY OUTCOMES trial
Aims The third Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction (MI) Task Force classified MIs into five types: Type 1, spontaneous; Type 2, related to oxygen supply/demand imbalance; Type 3, fatal without ascertainment of cardiac biomarkers; Type 4, related to percutaneous coronary intervention; and Type 5, related to coronary artery bypass surgery. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction with statins and proprotein convertase subtilisin–kexin Type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors reduces risk of MI, but less is known about effects on types of MI. ODYSSEY OUTCOMES compared the PCSK9 inhibitor alirocumab with placebo in 18 924 patients with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and elevated LDL-C (≥1.8 mmol/L) despite intensive statin therapy. In a pre-specified analysis, we assessed the effects of alirocumab on types of MI. Methods and results Median follow-up was 2.8 years. Myocardial infarction types were prospectively adjudicated and classified. Of 1860 total MIs, 1223 (65.8%) were adjudicated as Type 1, 386 (20.8%) as Type 2, and 244 (13.1%) as Type 4. Few events were Type 3 (n = 2) or Type 5 (n = 5). Alirocumab reduced first MIs [hazard ratio (HR) 0.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.77–0.95; P = 0.003], with reductions in both Type 1 (HR 0.87, 95% CI 0.77–0.99; P = 0.032) and Type 2 (0.77, 0.61–0.97; P = 0.025), but not Type 4 MI. Conclusion After ACS, alirocumab added to intensive statin therapy favourably impacted on Type 1 and 2 MIs. The data indicate for the first time that a lipid-lowering therapy can attenuate the risk of Type 2 MI. The population of merging compact binaries inferred using gravitational waves through GWTC-3
We report on the population properties of 76 compact binary mergers detected with gravitational waves below a false alarm rate of 1 per year through GWTC-3. The catalog contains three classes of binary mergers: BBH, BNS, and NSBH mergers. We infer the BNS merger rate to be between 10 and 1700 and the NSBH merger rate to be between 7.8 and 140 , assuming a constant rate density versus comoving volume and taking the union of 90% credible intervals for methods used in this work. Accounting for the BBH merger rate to evolve with redshift, we find the BBH merger rate to be between 17.9 and 44 at a fiducial redshift (z=0.2). We obtain a broad neutron star mass distribution extending from to . We can confidently identify a rapid decrease in merger rate versus component mass between neutron star-like masses and black-hole-like masses, but there is no evidence that the merger rate increases again before 10 . We also find the BBH mass distribution has localized over- and under-densities relative to a power law distribution. While we continue to find the mass distribution of a binary's more massive component strongly decreases as a function of primary mass, we observe no evidence of a strongly suppressed merger rate above . The rate of BBH mergers is observed to increase with redshift at a rate proportional to with for . Observed black hole spins are small, with half of spin magnitudes below . We observe evidence of negative aligned spins in the population, and an increase in spin magnitude for systems with more unequal mass ratio
