Development of automated methods for toxic metal determination based on on-line sample preparation techniques coupled with atomic absorption / emission spectrometry
The trends in analytical chemistry are towards the automation and miniaturization of the analytical methods. The first research project covers an investigation into the potential of developing an automatic on-line column preconcentration system using the readily available micro-cartridge HyperSep SCX for fast simultaneous determination of 10 analytes including toxic and essential metals (Ag, Cd, Co, Cr(III), Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in environmental natural water samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Next, a novel dual-syringe flow injection (DSFI) on-line column preconcentration system coupled to flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) has been developed for automatic trace metal determination in natural waters and biological samples. The proposed layout included two separate syringe pumps with independent operation each. The aim of the third research work was to investigate the analytical performance and potential applicability of Bond Elut Plexa PCX resin as sorbent for cadmium, lead and copper determination via an automatic flow injection (FI) on-line SPE–FAAS system. The aim of the fourth research project was the tackling of these problems by employing two strong neodymium magnets for on-line packing of a microcolumn with octadecylsilane (ODS) magnemite (Fe₂O₃) magnetic particles and the development of an automatic SI-MSPE system coupled with ETAAS for preconcentration and determination of trace metals. The last part of the PhD dissertation involves the development of a novel on-line lab-in-syringe strategy coupled to a membraneless gas-liquid separator in “all in one” platform for vapor generation atomic spectrometric assays.Οι τάσεις που επικρατούν στην αναλυτική χημεία είναι προς την κατεύθυνση της αυτοματοποίησης (automation) των μεθόδων ανάλυσης, καθώς και της σμίκρυνσης των διαστάσεων (miniaturization) των αναλυτικών οργάνων. Στην πρώτη ερευνητική εργασία αναπτύχθηκε μια αυτόματη μέθοδος on-line προσυγκέντρωσης με χρήση της μικροστήλης HyperSep SCX για γρήγορο και ταυτόχρονο προσδιορισμό ιχνών Ag(I), Cd(II), Co(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) και Zn(II) με φασματομετρία ατομικής εκπομπής με επαγωγικά συζευγμένο πλάσμα (ICP-AES).
