New results for the missing quantum numbers labeling the quadrupole and octupole boson basis
The many -pole boson states, with ,
realize the irreducible representation (IR) for the group reduction chains
. They have been analytically
studied and widely used for the description of nuclear systems. However, no
analytical expression for the degeneracy of the 's IR,
determined by the reduction , is available. Thus, the
number of distinct values taken by has been so far obtained by
solving some complex equations. Here we derive analytical expressions for the
degeneracy characterizing the octupole and quadrupole boson states,
respectively. The merit of this work consists of the fact that it completes the
analytical expressions for the -pole boson basis.Comment: 10page
Remarcs on the shape transition from spherical to deformed gamma unstable nuclei
Energies and transition probabilities for low lying states in Ba and
^{104Ru were calculated within a hybrid model. The ground and the first
states are described alternatively as a harmonic and anharmonic vibrator states
while the remaining states as states with E(5) symmetry. One concludes that a
gradual setting of the 'critical' potential yields a better agreement with the
experimental data. Very good agreement with the data is obtained for
Ru. Comparing the present results with those of E(5) symmetry, it is
conspicuous that the present formalism add corrections to the E(5) formalism by
bringing the predictions closer to the experimental data. Analytical
relationship between the states with U(5) symmetry and those given by the E(5)
description is established.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publicatio
Search for particle–vibration coupling in 65Cu
The lifetime of the 9/2 + state of 65 Cu, at 2534 keV, has been measured by fast timing techniques, in order to establish wether such state arises from a weak coupling between a p3=2 proton and the 3 octupole vibration at 3.56 MeV in the 64 Ni core. The 65 Cu nucleus was populated by the reaction 7 Li + 64 Ni at 32 MeV, at the Horia Hu- lubei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering (NIPNE) in Bucharest, and its -decay was detected by the ROSPHERE array. The measured lifetime coresponds to a B(E3) reduced transition probability to the ground state equal to 8.89 W.u., in agreement with theoretical predictions in the weak coupling limit
Measurement of 73 Ge(n,γ) cross sections and implications for stellar nucleosynthesis
© 2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.73 Ge(n,γ) cross sections were measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN up to neutron energies of 300 keV, providing for the first time experimental data above 8 keV. Results indicate that the stellar cross section at kT=30 keV is 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than most theoretical predictions. The new cross sections result in a substantial decrease of 73 Ge produced in stars, which would explain the low isotopic abundance of 73 Ge in the solar system.Peer reviewe
Response of a Li-glass/multi-anode photomultiplier detector to collimated thermal-neutron beams
The response of a position-sensitive Li-glass scintillator detector being
developed for thermal-neutron detection with 6 mm position resolution has been
investigated using collimated beams of thermal neutrons. The detector was moved
perpendicularly through the neutron beams in 0.5 to 1.0 mm horizontal and
vertical steps. Scintillation was detected in an 8 X 8 pixel multi-anode
photomultiplier tube on an event-by-event basis. In general, several pixels
registered large signals at each neutron-beam location. The number of pixels
registering signal above a set threshold was investigated, with the
maximization of the single-hit efficiency over the largest possible area of the
detector as the primary goal. At a threshold of ~50% of the mean of the
full-deposition peak, ~80% of the events were registered in a single pixel,
resulting in an effective position resolution of ~5 mm in X and Y. Lower
thresholds generally resulted in events demonstrating higher pixel
multiplicities, but these events could also be localized with ~5 mm position
resolution.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure
Cytosolic 5'-nucleotidase 1A autoantibody profile and clinical characteristics in inclusion body myositis
OBJECTIVES: Autoantibodies directed against cytosolic 5'-nucleotidase 1A have been identified in many patients with inclusion body myositis. This retrospective study investigated the association between anticytosolic 5'-nucleotidase 1A antibody status and clinical, serological and histopathological features to explore the utility of this antibody to identify inclusion body myositis subgroups and to predict prognosis.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from various European inclusion body myositis registries were pooled. Anticytosolic 5'-nucleotidase 1A status was determined by an established ELISA technique. Cases were stratified according to antibody status and comparisons made. Survival and mobility aid requirement analyses were performed using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards regression.RESULTS: Data from 311 patients were available for analysis; 102 (33%) had anticytosolic 5'-nucleotidase 1A antibodies. Antibody-positive patients had a higher adjusted mortality risk (HR 1.89, 95% CI 1.11 to 3.21, p=0.019), lower frequency of proximal upper limb weakness at disease onset (8% vs 23%, adjusted OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.12 to 0.68, p=0.005) and an increased prevalence of excess of cytochrome oxidase deficient fibres on muscle biopsy analysis (87% vs 72%, adjusted OR 2.80, 95% CI 1.17 to 6.66, p=0.020), compared with antibody-negative patients.INTERPRETATION: Differences were observed in clinical and histopathological features between anticytosolic 5'-nucleotidase 1A antibody positive and negative patients with inclusion body myositis, and antibody-positive patients had a higher adjusted mortality risk. Stratification of inclusion body myositis by anticytosolic 5'-nucleotidase 1A antibody status may be useful, potentially highlighting a distinct inclusion body myositis subtype with a more severe phenotype.</p
High-accuracy determination of the neutron flux in the new experimental area n_TOF-EAR2 at CERN
A new high flux experimental area has recently become operational at the n_TOF facility at CERN. This new measuring station, n_TOF-EAR2, is placed at the end of a vertical beam line at a distance of approximately 20m from the spallation target. The characterization of the neutron beam, in terms of flux, spatial profile and resolution function, is of crucial importance for the feasibility study and data analysis of all measurements to be performed in the new area. In this paper, the measurement of the neutron flux, performed with different solid-state and gaseous detection systems, and using three neutron-converting reactions considered standard in different energy regions is reported. The results of the various measurements have been combined, yielding an evaluated neutron energy distribution in a wide energy range, from 2meV to 100MeV, with an accuracy ranging from 2%, at low energy, to 6% in the high-energy region. In addition, an absolute normalization of the n_TOF-EAR2 neutron flux has been obtained by means of an activation measurement performed with 197Au foils in the beam.Peer reviewe
Measurement of the 240Pu(n,f) cross-section at the CERN n-TOF facility : First results from experimental area II (EAR-2)
The accurate knowledge of the neutron-induced fission cross-sections of actinides and other isotopes involved in the nuclear fuel cycle is essential for the design of advanced nuclear systems, such as Generation-IV nuclear reactors. Such experimental data can also provide the necessary feedback for the adjustment of nuclear model parameters used in the evaluation process, resulting in the further development of nuclear fission models. In the present work, the 240Pu(n,f) cross-section was measured at CERN's n-TOF facility relative to the well-known 235U(n,f) cross section, over a wide range of neutron energies, from meV to almost MeV, using the time-of-flight technique and a set-up based on Micromegas detectors. This measurement was the first experiment to be performed at n-TOF's new experimental area (EAR-2), which offers a significantly higher neutron flux compared to the already existing experimental area (EAR-1). Preliminary results as well as the experimental procedure, including a description of the facility and the data handling and analysis, are presented
CONSIDERATIONS ON STATIC NONLINEAR ANALYSIS OF COUPLING DEVICES - NONLINEAR CURVE STRESSES
Coupling devices are the elements ensuring the connection between the power source (tractor) and the towed machine, which must be checked in terms of their safety on the public roads by means of different methods. One of these methods is represented by non-linear static analysis through nonlinear curve stresses, which can in some cases replace verification by endurance testing. The paper presents such an analysis as well as the results obtained from this analysis
