The synergistic effect of microencapsulation in pectin microgels and inulin extracted from native crops of Jerusalem artichoke (JAI) was evaluated as a natural strategy to increase the survival of Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. tolerans F2 selected for its probiotic properties in Oncorhynchus mykiss. The strain was able to grow and ferment JAI in modified MRS broth, increasing cell population (∼+5 log units) with a net decrease in pH (6.2 ± 0.2 to 4.0 ± 0.5). Encapsulation of F2 in pectin microgels in the presence of JAI improved the survival of the strain not only during storage but also after exposure to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Viable entrapped cells in the presence of the prebiotic were significantly higher (8.2–8.4 log CFU/g) than without it (∼7.00 log CFU/g) after 56 days at 4 °C. These results encourage further implementation of these techniques for the formulation of functional feeds using natural alternative sources of inulin with greater viability on storage conditions and digestibility.Fil: Tarifa, Maria Clara. Role of CaCO3° neutral pair in calcium carbonate crystallization
The molecular structure of the units that get incorporated into the nuclei of the crystalline phase and sustain their growth is a fundamental issue in the pathway from a supersaturated solution to the formation of crystals. Using a fluorescent dye we have recorded the variation of the pH value in time along a gel where CaCl2 and NaHCO3 counter-diffuse to crystallize CaCO3. The same pH–space–time distribution maps were also computationally obtained using a chemical speciation code (phreeqc). Using data arising from this model we investigated the space-time evolution of the activity of the single species (ions and ion pairs) involved in the crystallization process. Our combined results suggest that, whatever the pathway from solution to crystals, the neutral pair CaCO3° is a key species in the CaCO3 precipitation system.European Research Council (European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) grant agreement no 340863, and Spanish MINECO grants MAT2014-60533-R

Irrigation water quality in the Mendoza river basin : temperature, pH, soluble and solid ions
variables temperatura, pH, iones solubles y sólidos
respecta a pH y sólidos totales volátiles.
The Mendoza River irrigates the province's
northern oasis, where the population of Greater
Mendoza is concentrated. Urban growth has
encroached upon, surrounded and traversed
originally agricultural land with an intricate network
of irrigation canals and drains, and urban storm
drainage collectors.
In order to analyze the evolution of water
quality in the basin, sampling sites were strategically
selected: three sampling points (RI to RIII) along
the river starting at the Cipolletti diversion dam; five
sampling points along the canal system (CI to CV);
and seven sampling points at drainage collectors
(DI to DVII). The samples were tested for
temperature, pH, soluble and solid ions (suspended,
settleable (10 minutes), total, fixed and volatile).
The drainage system samples were tested for only
the first three parameters. Statistical methodology
included descriptive, inferential and spatial analyses
of each variable.
No differences in pH and total volatile solids
were found between sampling points; however,
differences were observed in the other variables, in
general between RIII and RII with respect to RI. While
samples from canals and RI exhibit no differences
as regards carbonates and total volatile solids,
differences are found in all the other variables.Fil: Morábito, José.

Water quality in the area irrigated by the Mandoza river (Argentina)
a D_VII).
temperatura, pH, aniones y cationes
(cálculo de RAS), oxígeno disuelto (OD),
sólidos sedimentables, demanda química de
oxígeno (DQO), bacterias aerobias mesófilas
(BAM), coliformes totales y fecales y metales
pesados.
Pescara. Los metales pesados no presentan
grandes diferencias entre sitios de muestreo. The Mendoza River oasis is the most
important of the province. Urban growth has
encroached upon areas that were formerly
agricultural, surrounding the drainage canals
that contain urban storm runoff from convective
storms. Man uses water for drinking,
sanitation, irrigation, recreation and other
purposes, and discharges polluting effluents
into the irrigation and drainage system. In
order to analyze water quality in the oasis,
three sampling points (R_I to R_III) along
the river where the Cipolletti diversion dam
is located, five points along the canal network
(C_I to C_V), and seven along the drainage
collectors (D_I to D_VII) were strategically
selected. The points along the river and the
canal network were tested for the following
physico-chemical and microbiological
parameters: electrical conductivity, temperature,
pH, anions and cations (SAR calculation),
dissolved oxygen (DO), settleable
solids, chemical oxygen demand (COD),
mesophilic aerobic bacteria (MAB), total and
fecal coliforms, and heavy metals. The points
along the drainage network were only tested
for the first four parameters. Analytical results
were stored in a data base and were used
for a descriptive statistical and inferential
analysis that consisted in applying different
tests to detect possible differences to each
response variable at α = 0.05. Fixed and
random effects models of analyses of
variance were applied and homocedasticity
and normality assumptions were tested.
When assumptions were violated, the
Kruskal-Wallis test was used. A comparison
was made between the following sampling
points; rivers; RI and canals; and drains. It is
concluded that there are significant differences
in mean salinity and sodicity values
in R_II, and that quality changes in R_II and
R_III may be due to the inflow of additional
water. A comparison of parameters between
the head of the system (R_I) and the canal
network shows that discharges from Greater
Mendoza urban centers located to the west
of the «Cacique Guaymallén» canal and
discharges from the «Campo Espejo»
treatment plant (detected at point C_II)
significantly increase water salinity (+55 %)
and sodicity (+95 %) with respect to point R_I
(though the sodicity value is still low). Salinity
(+80 %), COD (+1159 %), and MAB
(+2873 %) also increased with the ensuing
decrease in DO (-58 %) due to discharges
from the Greater Mendoza area and the high
industrial pollution load from the «Pescara»
Canal (C_V, «Tulumaya» secondary canal)
with respect to point R_I. There were no
significant differences in heavy metals among
sampling points.Fil: Morábito, José.

Changes in the Frontotemporal Cortex and Cognitive Correlates in First-Episode Psychosis
Background: Loss of cortical volume in frontotemporal regions has been reported in patients with schizophrenia and their relatives. Cortical area and thickness are determined by different genetic processes, and measuring these parameters separately may clarify disturbances in corticogenesis relevant to schizophrenia. Our study also explored clinical and cognitive correlates of these parameters. Methods: Thirty-seven patients with first-episode psychosis (34 schizophrenia, 3 schizoaffective disorder) and 38 healthy control subjects matched for age and sex took part in the study. Imaging was performed on an magnetic resonance imaging 1.5-T scanner. Area and thickness of the frontotemporal cortex were measured using a surface-based morphometry method (Freesurfer). All subjects underwent neuropsychologic testing that included measures of premorbid and current IQ, working and verbal memory, and executive function. Results: Reductions in cortical area, more marked in the temporal cortex, were present in patients. Overall frontotemporal cortical thickness did not differ between groups, although regional thinning of the right superior temporal region was observed in patients. There was a significant association of both premorbid IQ and IQ at disease onset with area, but not thickness, of the frontotemporal cortex, and working memory span was associated with area of the frontal cortex. These associations remained significant when only patients with schizophrenia were considered. Conclusions: Our results suggest an early disruption of corticogenesis in schizophrenia, although the effect of subsequent environmental factors cannot be excluded. In addition, cortical abnormalities are subject to regional variations and differ from those present in neurodegenerative diseases
The Mediterranean fishery management: A call for shifting the current paradigm from duplication to synergy
Independence of science and best available science are fundamental pillars of the UN-FAO code of conduct for responsible fisheries and are also applied to the European Union (EU) Common Fishery Policy (CFP), with the overarching objective being the sustainable exploitation of the fisheries resources. CFP is developed by DG MARE, the department of the European Commission responsible for EU policy on maritime affairs and fisheries, which has the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) as consultant body. In the Mediterranean and Black Sea, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (FAO-GFCM), with its own Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries (GFCM-SAC), plays a critical role in fisheries governance, having the authority to adopt binding recommendations for fisheries conservation and management. During the last years, advice on the status of the main stocks in the Mediterranean and Black Sea has been provided both by GFCM-SAC and EU-STECF, often without a clear coordination and a lack of shared rules and practices. This has led in the past to: i) duplications of the advice on the status of the stocks thus adding confusion in the management process and, ii) a continuous managers’ interference in the scientific process by DG MARE officials hindering its transparency and independence. Thus, it is imperative that this stalemate is rapidly resolved and that the free role of science in Mediterranean fisheries assessment and management is urgently restored to assure the sustainable exploitation of Mediterranean marine resources in the future.En prens
