Financial intermediation and equity investment with costly monitoring
This paper studies the efficiency of equilibria in a productive OLG economy where the process of financial intermediation is characterized by costly state verification. Both competitive equilibria and Constrained Pareto Optimal allocations are characterized. It is shown that market outcomes can be socially inefficient, even when a weaker notion than Pareto optimality is considered.Financial intermediation, costly state verification, Constrained Pareto Optimality
What can we learn from fluctuations of particle ratios?
We explain how fluctuations of ratios can constrain and falsify the statistical model of particle production in heavy ion collisions, using K/p fluctuations as an example. We define an observable capable of determining which statistical model, if any, governs freeze-out in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We calculate this observable for K/p fluctuations, and show that it should be the same for RHIC and LHC energies, as well as independent of centrality, if the Grand-Canonical statistical model is an appropriate description and chemical equilibrium applies. We describe variations of this scaling for deviations from this scenario, such as light quark chemical non-equilibrium, strange quark over-saturation and local conservation (canonical ensemble) for strange quarks. We also introduce a similar observable capable, together with the published K*/K measurement, of ascertaining if an interacting hadron gas phase governs the system between thermal and chemical freeze-out, and of ascertaining its duration and impact on hadronic chemistry
Asymptotic Mutual Information Statistics of Separately-Correlated Rician Fading MIMO Channels
Precise characterization of the mutual information of MIMO systems is
required to assess the throughput of wireless communication channels in the
presence of Rician fading and spatial correlation. Here, we present an
asymptotic approach allowing to approximate the distribution of the mutual
information as a Gaussian distribution in order to provide both the average
achievable rate and the outage probability. More precisely, the mean and
variance of the mutual information of the separatelycorrelated Rician fading
MIMO channel are derived when the number of transmit and receive antennas grows
asymptotically large and their ratio approaches a finite constant. The
derivation is based on the replica method, an asymptotic technique widely used
in theoretical physics and, more recently, in the performance analysis of
communication (CDMA and MIMO) systems. The replica method allows to analyze
very difficult system cases in a comparatively simple way though some authors
pointed out that its assumptions are not always rigorous. Being aware of this,
we underline the key assumptions made in this setting, quite similar to the
assumptions made in the technical literature using the replica method in their
asymptotic analyses. As far as concerns the convergence of the mutual
information to the Gaussian distribution, it is shown that it holds under some
mild technical conditions, which are tantamount to assuming that the spatial
correlation structure has no asymptotically dominant eigenmodes. The accuracy
of the asymptotic approach is assessed by providing a sizeable number of
numerical results. It is shown that the approximation is very accurate in a
wide variety of system settings even when the number of transmit and receive

ElectroWeak Symmetry Breaking in Tevatron Run II
The Tevatron Run II will provide CDF and D0 with a large dataset of ppbar
interactions collected at sqrt(s)=2 TeV. We discuss the opportunity for the two
experiments to improve the understanding of electrowek and top physics in the
first years of data taking (Run IIa,2fb-1) in view of the upgrades of the
detectors. We also discuss the prospectives for a Higgs discovery at the
Tevatron in view of the Run IIb data taking period which will deliver an
