    Elecciones comparadas en Nuevo León y Sinaloa en un contexto de crimen organizado

    En perspectiva comparada, se exponen los casos de Nuevo León y Sinaloa en relación a su último proceso electoral (2009 y 2010, respectivamente) ubicando sólo como unidad de análisis la elección de gobernador. Partimos de la hipótesis de que a pesar de la alta presencia del crimen organizado en estas regiones, lo anterior no disminuye los índices de votación del electorado en ambas entidades; antes bien, en uno de los casos aumenta. Sin embargo, la posible conexión entre el candidato en Sinaloa con actores del crimen organizado sí produce un resultado adverso a la hegemonía priista, que propicia por primera vez la alternancia política. En el caso de Nuevo León, aunque la presencia del crimen organizado fue muy activa al inicio del proceso electoral, no tuvo una afectación clave en el proceso electoral, ni en la hegemonía del partido gobernante

    Wave-induced extreme water levels in the Puerto Morelos fringing reef lagoon

    Wave-induced extreme water levels in the Puerto Morelos fringing reef lagoon are investigated by means of a phase-resolving non-hydrostatic wave model (SWASH). This model solves the nonlinear shallow water equations including non-hydrostatic pressure. The one-dimensional version of the model is implemented in order to investigate wave transformation in fringing reefs. Firstly, the numerical model is validated with (i) laboratory experiments conducted on a physical model (Demirbilek et al., 2007)and (ii) field observations (Coronado et al., 2007). Numerical results show good agreement with both experimental and field data. The comparison against the physical model results, for energetic wave conditions, indicates that high- and low-frequency wave transformation is well reproduced. Moreover, extreme water-level conditions measured during the passage of Hurricane Ivan in Puerto Morelos are also estimated by the numerical tool. Subsequently, the model is implemented at different along-reef locations in Puerto Morelos. Extreme water levels, wave-induced setup, and infragravity wave energy are estimated inside the reef lagoon for different storm wave conditions (<i>H</i><sub>s</sub> >2 m). The numerical results revealed a strong correlation between the offshore sea-swell wave energy and the setup. In contrast, infragravity waves are shown to be the result of a more complex pattern which heavily relies on the reef geometry. Indeed, the southern end of the reef lagoon provides evidence of resonance excitation, suggesting that the reef barrier may act as either a natural flood protection morphological feature, or as an inundation hazard enhancer depending on the incident wave conditions

    The GALFA-HI Survey: Data Release 1

    We present the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey, and its first full data release (DR1). GALFA-HI is a high resolution (~ 4'), large area (13000 deg^2), high spectral resolution (0.18 km/s), wide band (-700 < v_LSR < +700 km/s) survey of the Galactic interstellar medium in the 21-cm line hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen conducted at Arecibo Observatory. Typical noise levels are 80 mK RMS in an integrated 1 km/s channel. GALFA-HI is a dramatic step forward in high-resolution, large-area Galactic HI surveys, and we compare GALFA-HI to past, present, and future Galactic HI surveys. We describe in detail new techniques we have developed to reduce these data in the presence of fixed pattern noise, gain variation, and inconsistent beam shapes, and we show how we have largely mitigated these effects. We present our first full data release, covering 7520 square degrees of sky and representing 3046 hours of integration time, and discuss the details of these data.Comment: Accepted to the ApJ

    A Forecasting Model to Predict the Demand of Roses in an Ecuadorian Small Business Under Uncertain Scenarios

    [EN] Ecuador is worldwide considered as one of the main natural flower producers and exporters ¿being roses the most salient ones. Such a fact has naturally led the emergence of small and medium sized companies devoted to the production of quality roses in the Ecuadorian highlands, which intrinsically entails resource usage optimization. One of the first steps towards optimizing the use of resources is to forecast demand, since it enables a fair perspective of the future, in such a manner that the in-advance raw materials supply can be previewed against eventualities, resources usage can be properly planned, as well as the misuse can be avoided. Within this approach, the problem of forecasting the supply of roses was solved into two phases: the first phase consists of the macro-forecast of the total amount to be exported by the Ecuadorian flower sector by the year 2020, using multi-layer neural networks. In the second phase, the monthly demand for the main rose varieties offered by the study company was micro-forecasted by testing seven models. In addition, a Bayesian network model is designed, which takes into consideration macroeconomic aspects, the level of employability in Ecuador and weather-related aspects.     Correlación entre hemograma y frotis sanguíneo para determinar E. canis en la vereda Peñitas de Puente Nacional

    Estudio serológico de Ehrlichia canis en la vereda Peñitas, del municipio de Puente Nacional, Santander, mediante la correlación de frotis sanguíneo y cuadro hemático. Se recolectaron 80 muestras de sangre en caninos para el cuadro hemático y el frotis sanguíneo, buscando encontrar en este último mórulas de E. canis, y en el hemograma, los cambios a nivel sanguíneo en aquellos individuos que resultaran positivos. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo tabulando la información con datos positivos y negativos obtenidos de cada animal, los resultados se interpretaron de acuerdo con las variables: raza, edad, sexo, antecedentes clínicos, estado general, planes de vermifugación y las variaciones del cuadro hemático. Para determinar la relación entre los casos positivos y cada una de las variables se utilizó la prueba de Probabilidad de Fisher. Las pruebas positivas arrojaron un resultado de 26,25% de presencia de E. Canis. No se encontraron diferencias significativas de prevalencia asociadas a las variables de los resultados del hemograma. Se demuestra la presencia de E. canis en la vereda Peñitas. Se confirma la importancia de implementar un programa de control y prevención de la diseminación del agente causal, mejorando los planes de vermifugación de los caninos

    Managed Aquifer Recharge as a Tool to Enhance Sustainable Groundwater Management in California

    A growing population and an increased demand for water resources have resulted in a global trend of groundwater depletion. Arid and semi-arid climates are particularly susceptible, often relying on groundwater to support large population centers or irrigated agriculture in the absence of sufficient surface water resources. In an effort to increase the security of groundwater resources, managed aquifer recharge (MAR) programs have been developed and implemented globally. MAR is the approach of intentionally harvesting and infiltrating water to recharge depleted aquifer storage. California is a prime example of this growing problem, with three cities that have over a million residents and an agricultural industry that was valued at 47 billion dollars in 2015. The present-day groundwater overdraft of over 100 km3 (since 1962) indicates a clear disparity between surface water supply and water demand within the state. In the face of groundwater overdraft and the anticipated effects of climate change, many new MAR projects are being constructed or investigated throughout California, adding to those that have existed for decades. Some common MAR types utilized in California include injection wells, infiltration basins (also known as spreading basins, percolation basins, or recharge basins), and low-impact development. An emerging MAR type that is actively being investigated is the winter flooding of agricultural fields using existing irrigation infrastructure and excess surface water resources, known as agricultural MAR. California therefore provides an excellent case study to look at the historical use and performance of MAR, ongoing and emerging challenges, novel MAR applications, and the potential for expansion of MAR. Effective MAR projects are an essential tool for increasing groundwater security, both in California and on a global scale.     Power balances, transnational elites, and local economic governance: The political economy of development in Medellín

    Applying a non-linear political economy analysis of power balances, institutional mechanisms, and elite structures, this study sheds light on the characteristics of Medellín’s economic development since the early 2000s. Elites with minimal technological capabilities and interests in promoting the advancement of transnational capitalism have successfully secured access to sources of power. These conditions (re)produce neoliberal logics of local governance that focus on economic growth in sectors with perceived global comparative advantages and on sustaining the particular power balances in Medellín’s political settlement. This has led to failures of generating positive forward and backward linkages for productivity growth of local firms, a local labour market marked by low wages and high employment elasticities, and large income inequalities. The local governance model that perpetuates productivity and inequality problems of the city is adopted as an opportunistic discourse of Medellín’s transnationalised capitalist elite in the larger neoliberal context of Colombia’s polity and economic policy agenda. In the absence of structural reforms targeting low wages and incentivising firms to develop technological capabilities, Medellín’s low productivity and high inequality problems are likely to persist

    Evaluación sensorial de ate hecho con pectina de cáscara de naranja

    Objetivo: El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la calidad sensorial de un ate hecho con pectina de cáscara de naranja comparado con uno elaborado con pectina industrial (control), con la finalidad de dar una alternativa de uso de este biopolímero en un alimento artesanal mexicano. Diseño/metodología/aproximación: Se realizó la extracción de pectina de la cáscara de naranja. Se elaboraron muestras de ate control y otra elaborada con pectina de naranja; se evaluaron características físicas y sensoriales. Resultados: No hubo diferencias en color, ni en la percepción sensorial de sabor, color y textura del ate hecho de pectina de cáscara de naranja y aquel elaborado con pectina industrial. Sin embargo, el ate de pectina de cáscara de naranja mostró mayor adhesividad y fue más frágil que el control. Limitaciones del estudio/implicaciones:&nbsp; Se requieren más estudios del efecto de adición de la pectina extraída de la cáscara de naranja para mejorar la textura del ate.     Local and Landscape Factors Determining Occurrence of Phyllostomid Bats in Tropical Secondary Forests

    Neotropical forests are being increasingly replaced by a mosaic of patches of different successional stages, agricultural fields and pasture lands. Consequently, the identification of factors shaping the performance of taxa in anthropogenic landscapes is gaining importance, especially for taxa playing critical roles in ecosystem functioning. As phyllostomid bats provide important ecological services through seed dispersal, pollination and control of animal populations, in this study we assessed the relationships between phyllostomid occurrence and the variation in local and landscape level habitat attributes caused by disturbance. We mist-netted phyllostomids in 12 sites representing 4 successional stages of a tropical dry forest (initial, early, intermediate and late). We also quantitatively characterized the habitat attributes at the local (vegetation structure complexity) and the landscape level (forest cover, area and diversity of patches). Two focal scales were considered for landscape characterization: 500 and 1000 m. During 142 sampling nights, we captured 606 individuals representing 15 species and 4 broad guilds. Variation in phyllostomid assemblages, ensembles and populations was associated with variation in local and landscape habitat attributes, and this association was scale-dependent. Specifically, we found a marked guild-specific response, where the abundance of nectarivores tended to be negatively associated with the mean area of dry forest patches, while the abundance of frugivores was positively associated with the percentage of riparian forest. These results are explained by the prevalence of chiropterophilic species in the dry forest and of chiropterochorous species in the riparian forest. Our results indicate that different vegetation classes, as well as a multi-spatial scale approach must be considered for evaluating bat response to variation in landscape attributes. Moreover, for the long-term conservation of phyllostomids in anthropogenic landscapes, we must realize that the management of the habitat at the landscape level is as important as the conservation of particular forest fragments
