Sphaerodoridae (Annelida: Polychaeta) from the Bellingshausen Sea (Antarctica) with the description of two new species
The examination of polychaete collections obtained during the Spanish Bentart 2006expedition to the Bellingshausen Sea (Antarctica) revealed the presence of several sphaerodorid species. In this work, species belonging to the genera Sphaerodorum Örsted, 1843, Ephesiella Chamberlin, 1919, Clavodorum Hartman and Fauchald, 1971 and Sphaerephesia Fauchald, 1972 are reported including two new species belonging to Sphaerodorum and Sphaerephesia, respectively. A specimen identified as Ephesiella sp. might also represent a new species but, due to its poor state of preservation, a formal description is not possible yet. Furthermore, Sphaerodoropsis polypapillata Hartmann-Schröder and Rosenfeldt, 1988 is transferred to the genus Clavodorum Hartman and Fauchald, 1971 after examination of the type series and specimens obtained from the Bellingshausen Sea.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología; REN 2001-1074/ANTComisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología; CGL2004-0185
The hyperfine transition in light muonic atoms of odd Z
The hyperfine (hf) transition rates for muonic atoms have been re-measured
for select light nuclei, using neutron detectors to evaluate the time
dependence of muon capture. For F = 5.6 (2)
s for the hf transition rate, a value which is considerably more
accurate than previous measurements. Results are also reported for Na, Al, P,
Cl, and K; that result for P is the first positive identification.Comment: 12 pages including 5 tables and 4 figures, RevTex, submitted to Phys.

Time-dependent density functional study of the electronic spectra of oligoacenes in the charge states -1, 0, +1, and +2
We present a systematic theoretical study of the five smallest oligoacenes
(naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene, pentacene, and hexacene) in their
anionic, neutral, cationic, and dicationic charge states. We used density
functional theory (DFT) to obtain the ground-state optimised geometries, and
time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) to evaluate the electronic absorption spectra.
Total-energy differences enabled us to evaluate the electron affinities and
first and second ionisation energies, the quasiparticle correction to the
HOMO-LUMO energy gap and an estimate of the excitonic effects in the neutral
molecules. Electronic absorption spectra have been computed by combining two
different implementations of TD-DFT: the frequency-space method to study
general trends as a function of charge-state and molecular size for the
lowest-lying in-plane long-polarised and short-polarised
electronic transitions, and the real-time propagation scheme to obtain the
whole photo-absorption cross-section up to the far-UV. Doubly-ionised PAHs are
found to display strong electronic transitions of character
in the near-IR, visible, and near-UV spectral ranges, like their singly-charged
counterparts. While, as expected, the broad plasmon-like structure with its
maximum at about 17-18 eV is relatively insensitive to the charge-state of the
molecule, a systematic decrease with increasing positive charge of the
absorption cross-section between about 6 and about 12 eV is observed for each
member of the class.Comment: 38 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in Chemical

Antimicrobial Peptides and Skin: A Paradigm of Translational Medicine
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small, cationic, amphiphilic peptides with broad-spectrum microbicidal activity against both bacteria and fungi. In mammals, AMPs form the first line of host defense against infections and generally play an important role as effector agents of the innate immune system. The AMP era was born more than 6 decades ago when the first cationic cyclic peptide antibiotics, namely polymyxins and tyrothricin, found their way into clinical use. Due to the good clinical experience in the treatment of, for example, infections of mucus membranes as well as the subsequent understanding of mode of action, AMPs are now considered for treatment of inflammatory skin diseases and for improving healing of infected wounds. Based on the preclinical findings, including pathobiochemistry and molecular medicine, targeted therapy strategies are developed and first results indicate that AMPs influence processes of diseased skin. Importantly, in contrast to other antibiotics, AMPs do not seem to propagate the development of antibiotic-resistant micro-organisms. Therefore, AMPs should be tested in clinical trials for their efficacy and tolerability in inflammatory skin diseases and chronic wounds. Apart from possible fields of application, these peptides appear suited as an example of the paradigm of translational medicine for skin diseases which is today seen as a `two-way road' - from bench to bedside and backwards from bedside to bench. Bose-Einstein Correlations in e+e- to W+W- at 172 and 183 GeV
Bose-Einstein correlations between like-charge pions are studied in hadronic
final states produced by e+e- annihilations at center-of-mass energies of 172
and 183 GeV. Three event samples are studied, each dominated by one of the
processes W+W- to qqlnu, W+W- to qqqq, or (Z/g)* to qq. After demonstrating the
existence of Bose-Einstein correlations in W decays, an attempt is made to
determine Bose-Einstein correlations for pions originating from the same W
boson and from different W bosons, as well as for pions from (Z/g)* to qq
events. The following results are obtained for the individual chaoticity
parameters lambda assuming a common source radius R: lambda_same = 0.63 +- 0.19
+- 0.14, lambda_diff = 0.22 +- 0.53 +- 0.14, lambda_Z = 0.47 +- 0.11 +- 0.08, R
= 0.92 +- 0.09 +- 0.09. In each case, the first error is statistical and the
second is systematic. At the current level of statistical precision it is not
established whether Bose-Einstein correlations, between pions from different W
bosons exist or not.Comment: 24 pages, LaTeX, including 6 eps figures, submitted to European

W+W- production and triple gauge boson couplings at LEP energies up to 183 GeV
A study of W-pair production in e+e- annihilations at Lep2 is presented,
based on 877 W+W- candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 57
pb-1 at sqrt(s) = 183 GeV. Assuming that the angular distributions of the
W-pair production and decay, as well as their branching fractions, are
described by the Standard Model, the W-pair production cross-section is
measured to be 15.43 +- 0.61 (stat.) +- 0.26 (syst.) pb. Assuming lepton
universality and combining with our results from lower centre-of-mass energies,
the W branching fraction to hadrons is determined to be 67.9 +- 1.2 (stat.) +-
0.5 (syst.)%. The number of W-pair candidates and the angular distributions for
each final state (qqlnu, qqqq, lnulnu) are used to determine the triple gauge
boson couplings. After combining these values with our results from lower
centre-of-mass energies we obtain D(kappa_g)=0.11+0.52-0.37,
D(g^z_1)=0.01+0.13-0.12 and lambda=-0.10+0.13-0.12, where the errors include
both statistical and systematic uncertainties and each coupling is determined
setting the other two couplings to the Standard Model value. The fraction of W
bosons produced with a longitudinal polarisation is measured to be
0.242+-0.091(stat.)+-0.023(syst.). All these measurements are consistent with
the Standard Model expectations.Comment: 48 pages, LaTeX, including 13 eps or ps figures, submitted to

Measurement of B(B-->X_s {\gamma}), the B-->X_s {\gamma} photon energy spectrum, and the direct CP asymmetry in B-->X_{s+d} {\gamma} decays
The photon spectrum in B --> X_s {\gamma} decay, where X_s is any strange
hadronic state, is studied using a data sample of (382.8\pm 4.2) \times 10^6
e^+ e^- --> \Upsilon(4S) --> BBbar events collected by the BABAR experiment at
the PEP-II collider. The spectrum is used to measure the branching fraction B(B
--> X_s \gamma) = (3.21 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.08)\times 10^{-4} and the
first, second, and third moments = 2.267 \pm 0.019 \pm 0.032 \pm
0.003 GeV,, )^2> = 0.0484 \pm 0.0053 \pm 0.0077 \pm
0.0005 GeV^2, and )^3> = -0.0048 \pm 0.0011 \pm 0.0011
\pm 0.0004 GeV^3, for the range E_\gamma > 1.8 GeV, where E_{\gamma} is the
photon energy in the B-meson rest frame. Results are also presented for
narrower E_{\gamma} ranges. In addition, the direct CP asymmetry A_{CP}(B -->
X_{s+d} \gamma) is measured to be 0.057 \pm 0.063. The spectrum itself is also
unfolded to the B-meson rest frame; that is the frame in which theoretical
predictions for its shape are made.Comment: 37 pages, 19 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. D. No

Bose-Einstein Correlations of Three Charged Pions in Hadronic Z^0 Decays
Bose-Einstein Correlations (BEC) of three identical charged pions were
studied in 4 x 10^6 hadronic Z^0 decays recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP.
The genuine three-pion correlations, corrected for the Coulomb effect, were
separated from the known two-pion correlations by a new subtraction procedure.
A significant genuine three-pion BEC enhancement near threshold was observed
having an emitter source radius of r_3 = 0.580 +/- 0.004 (stat.) +/- 0.029
(syst.) fm and a strength of \lambda_3 = 0.504 +/- 0.010 (stat.) +/- 0.041
(syst.). The Coulomb correction was found to increase the \lambda_3 value by
\~9% and to reduce r_3 by ~6%. The measured \lambda_3 corresponds to a value of
0.707 +/- 0.014 (stat.) +/- 0.078 (syst.) when one takes into account the
three-pion sample purity. A relation between the two-pion and the three-pion
source parameters is discussed.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures included, accepted by Eur. Phys. J.
