Generation and stability of discrete gap solitons

We analyze stability and generation of discrete gap solitons in weakly coupled optical waveguides. We demonstrate how both stable and unstable solitons can be observed experimentally in the engineered binary waveguide arrays, and also reveal a connection between the gap-soliton instabilities and limitations on the mutual beam focusing in periodic photonic structures.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

Intensity limits for stationary and interacting multi-soliton complexes

We obtain an accurate estimate for the peak intensities of multi-soliton complexes for a Kerr-type nonlinearity in the (1+1) - dimension problem. Using exact analytical solutions of the integrable set of nonlinear Schrodinger equations, we establish a rigorous relationship between the eigenvalues of incoherently-coupled fundamental solitons and the range of admissible intensities. A clear geometrical interpretation of this effect is given.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

Unitarity of scattering and edge spin accumulation

We consider a 2D ballistic and quasi-ballistic structures with spin-orbit-related splitting of the electron spectrum. The ballistic region is attached to the leads with a voltage applied between them. We calculate the edge spin density which arises in the presence of a charge current through the structure. We solve the problem with the use of the method of scattering states and clarify the important role of the unitarity of scattering. In the case of a straight boundary it leads to exact cancellation of long-wavelength oscillations of the spin density. In general, however, the smooth spin oscillations with the spin precession length may arise, as it happens, e.g., for the wiggly boundary. Moreover, we show that the result crucially depends on the form of the spin-orbit Hamiltonian.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1007.113

Discrete surface solitons in semi-infinite binary waveguide arrays

We analyze discrete surface modes in semi-infinite binary waveguide arrays, which can support simultaneously two types of discrete solitons. We demonstrate that the analysis of linear surface states in such arrays provides important information about the existence of nonlinear surface modes and their properties. We find numerically the families of both discrete surface solitons and nonlinear Tamm (gap) states and study their stability properties.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Opt. Let

Determination of tunneling charge via current measurements

We consider a tunnel junction between two arbitrary non-linear systems in any dimension, which can be different. We show that the tunneling charge can be detected using three alternative methods based on current measurements. Besides being technically easier compared to noise measurements, these methods present valuable advantages: they do not require the knowledge of the underlying models, and some are accessible in the experimentally convenient low-voltage regime, where heating effects are reduced. The first method is based on the AC conductance, while the two others are based on photo-assisted current (PAC) and can be implemented for any time-dependence of the tunneling amplitude. These are promising for edge states in the regime of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE): the Hamiltonian does not have to be specified and can incorporate non-universal interactions between the edges, and it is more convenient to use an AC gate voltage rather than an AC bias. These methods apply for instance to weak barriers in 1-D systems, Superconductor-Insulator-Normal (SIN) or graphene-like structures.Comment: The form has been improved, with additional useful comments, citations have been added. 7 pages, one figur

Soliton control in modulated optically-induced photonic lattices

We discuss soliton control in reconfigurable optically-induced photonic lattices created by three interfering beams. We reveal novel dynamical regimes for strongly localized solitons, including binary switching and soliton revivals through resonant wave mixing.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Content modifie
